Become Better Photographer: Engagement Session Posing with Vanessa Joy

In this lesson with amazing Vanessa Joy (via her awesome show “Breathe Your Passion” highlighted by AdoramaTV) we are going to talk about Vanessa’s typical engagement session, how she interacts with clients and poses them.

Vanessa shares: “Because this is usually the first time that my clients have been in a professional photo shoot, I try to start off with easy poses basically staying a little bit further away from them than I normally would and having them do things that are natural, like walking away from me, walking towards me maybe, being even a little bit flirtatious looking at each other and interacting with each other, rather than interacting with me as much.”

“After I get them a little bit more comfortable I’ll have them start looking at me for some photos and then I will have them interact with each other with a little bit more affection than just holding hands. When I posed a bride and groom, I love it when a groom’s hands are on the bride’s arms, and her arms are just tucked in nice and close with him, it just looks so much more connected for me than the typical arms around the waist, arms around the shoulders look.”

” After I feel that my clients are comfortable being photographed I’ll move in typically with a 50 mm 1.2 lens and photograph some more of the details. Photographing the bride having her looking at me, look at her fianc\xc3\xa9 maybe some of the details like the ring or anything else that will make for a cute photo.”

” I do like to photograph the groom as well so I try to make sure I pay attention to both of them even though a lot of the attention does tend to fall on the bride-to-be. “

“From there we’ll change positions, I typically try to do standing still, standing and moving positions, and sitting positions with my clients so they have a good variety, again having them interact with each other is great these tend to be the pictures that my clients like a little bit better, and will blow up or make big pictures in the album’s. The pictures of them looking at the camera do tend to be the ones that mom and dad hang on their wall! “

Vanessa continues – “So I want to make sure I get both of them. Both far away and then again both close up. I’ll do a little detail pictures, and then I’ll also have closeup pictures of them looking at the camera, again I want to give them as much variety as I can in the hour-long session that I have with them, and I typically spend a little bit longer than that even with the couple, usually shooting about an hour before sunset, so I have the best natural light .”

“Even though my style is a little bit more light and airy and soft and romantic I will do some that are a little bit more fashion-forward so some stronger poses just to give them again a little bit of variety.”

“Posing the hands is something I’d like to pay special attention to. Posing hands on the lapel and then the bride with her hands on her hip. After that I do get them a little bit closer together because again those are the types of photos that they have learned to expect from me so I want to keep those at the forefront of what I’m doing.”

Atilla Adam: For a lens, I decided to buy an expensive one. I got the 24-70, the f/2.8, a long, long time ago, but I shot everything with that. I learned extra photography, I shot my portraits through that, I shot some close-ups and stuff. Like I really used it, because I figured if I want to spend that much money, it has to pay for itself, it has to work. I’ve used that lens for two years straight.
But I find myself always going to the 35 as a sweet spot. And then I think the 50 for portraits comes from the film school lectures because to them the 50mm lens is the one that … like what your eyes see, so it’s like it’s exact, no distortions, so that’s what was hammered into me, and I’m staying with that. Although I’ve seen people liking the 75 or 65 and 85 for portraits too, which is interesting to me because that’s not what I learned.

Kelly Elaine: I have 24-70 2.8 L lens, 135 f/2L and then I have the 51.4 lens.

Zuz: I use prime lenses and 24-70 most often, but I usually like to stick with primes.

Meech: My lens, I have a 100mm Macro beauty. And then also I have the 24 by 70 2.8. Those are my two prime lenses that I go with. It covers basically everything fashion, beauty, portrait styles. So those are generally my prime lenses. I have 50mm 1.4 as well, but the 24 by 70, 100mm, that Macro, the detail, the quality is insane so …

Stage Hill 4 is one of our largest and brightest stages. Advantageously positioned with the windows facing west and north, this stage gets plenty of sift indirect sunlight in the first half of the day and lots of direct sunbeams in the second half. Hill 4 is furnished with several comfy and photogenic couches of cream and and golden/brown leather color. Harpers Bazaar, Elle, And Marie Claire Inpired Shoot In Studio 2!

No matter where inspiration comes from, keep it coming! Model Charleen and her crew drew some inspirations from famous fashion magazines to produce these marvelous shots!

About the shoot:

My name is Charleen I’m an international Model Originally and currently a New York native. I recently shot at FD studios alongside some creatives in Long Island City on 8/28/2018. The concept that we were going for in terms of art direction was a more editorial/high fashion look. The looks consisted of inspirations from Harpers Bazaar, Elle, and Marie Claire. With all the Creatives (listed below) we were able to accomplish each look with some sass, edge, and of course originality.

Fitness Shoot In Stage C

With a little help of the strobe, photographer Joe Scarnici nicely captured “natural environment” of stage C as a background for his fitness model Kirstie Patrice.

Here are some selects from my shoot there with fitness model Kirstie Patrice. Clothes were on loan from ASICS Italy. Exercise direction was done by Fabio Inka and photography by Joe Scarnici.

About the Stage:

Photographer’s choice for the shoot was stage C. It features large South and East facing windows, with lots of natural light. What can be better than a golden hour for a photographer? Oh well, if only the sunrise/sunset time were to happen every hour, that would have been great, right?! In this episode amazing Vanessa Joy (via her awesome show “Breathe Your Passion” highlighted by AdoramaTV) will teach you how to make golden hour happen any time you want!

Vanessa at the set: “We’re here with Stazia, she’s actually also a photographer and I’m gonna take her head shot. When it’s cloudy out clients, at least mine, still expect that light airy warm golden hour feel but as you know we don’t always have that luxury. So what we’re going to do is use off-camera flash in order to simulate the Sun.”

“So there are two ways that you can go about doing this, the first I’m going to show you involves two lights but you can do this with just one so first off to the left, we have the Profoto B1, it has a half CTO gel on it. Which just means I’m turning it orange. Why? Because the Sun is orange. So I’m gelling that they’re so it mimics the Sun and I’m also putting it in a position, low and behind my subject just like if I did have that nice golden hour glow that’s where I would position the Sun as well. So really all we’re doing with that Profoto light there is mimicking the Sun.”

“I’m going to want to fill her face as well and make sure the light is flattering there. There is two ways I can do this but first we’re going to start off with using a softbox. So I have a second Profoto B1 light here and it has a softbox on it has the 3×2 softbox, nice and close to her so we get a really soft light. “

“The way that I get the exposure first is I use my live view and I want to just get the exposure as if I was going to photograph her without all these lights. “

“…now I’m going to do is turn on my TTL. So one of the nice things about the Profoto lights that I love is the TTL function which is just letting me use auto, really to get the roundabout power that I want coming out of my lights. So I’m not doing anything else but putting on my transmitter and firing again. “

“I just have light coming in. What I usually do at this point is I change from TTL to manual so that now I can control and tweak my lights how I want them to be. I could walk over to my lights to do that or I can just do that on my transmitter here. So looking at that picture I know that I want the backlight my sun to be a little bit brighter. I’m going to move the light a little bit closer to her though, the more soft it’s gonna be. “
