About photographer:

A sense of serenity, spirituality, and a pure sense of freedom overcome me when I submerge myself in nature. Each place and moment has it’s own unique effect and lasting influence. Freedom overcome me when I submerge myself in nature. Photography allows me to freeze these moments, giving me the opportunity to reflect upon and share the power of nature’s awesome beauty. My passion for the outdoors was ignited from growing up in the picturesque town of Whitefish, Montana. While playing in the woods, fishing in a quiet stream,or just playing with our dogs in the backyard, nature was always the backdrop to my greatest youthful memories. Although I have moved away from Montana (returning at least once a year to recharge) my desire to spend time outdoors has never faded. Whether standing on a remote beach, in a desolate desert or on a snow covered peak I embrace the challenge of capturing the best of what nature has to offer. Photography gives me a purpose to explore and demands patience to capture those brief magical moments of color & light.

What can be better than a golden hour for a photographer? Oh well, if only the sunrise/sunset time were to happen every hour, that would have been great, right?! In this episode  amazing Vanessa Joy  (via her awesome show “Breathe Your Passion” highlighted by AdoramaTV) will teach you how to make golden hour happen any time you want!

Vanessa at the set: “We’re here with Stazia, she’s actually  also a photographer and I’m gonna take  her head shot. When it’s cloudy out  clients, at least mine, still expect that light airy warm golden hour feel but as  you know we don’t always have that  luxury. So what we’re going to do is use  off-camera flash in order to simulate  the Sun.”

Become Better Photographer: Using Off Camera Flash to Fake Golden Hour with Vanessa Joy -Vanessa Joy, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, golden hour strobe lightblog, golden hour imitation, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Adorama TV

“So there are two ways that you  can go about doing this, the first I’m  going to show you involves two lights  but you can do this with just one so  first off to the left, we have  the Profoto B1, it has a half CTO gel on  it. Which just means I’m turning it orange.  Why? Because the Sun is orange.  So I’m gelling that they’re so it mimics  the Sun and I’m also putting it in a  position, low and behind my subject just  like if I did have that nice golden hour  glow that’s where I would position the  Sun as well. So really all we’re doing  with that Profoto light there is  mimicking the Sun.”

“I’m going to  want to fill her face as well and make  sure the light is flattering there. There is  two ways I can do this but first we’re  going to start off with using a softbox.  So I have a second Profoto B1 light here  and it has a softbox on it has the 3×2  softbox, nice and close to her so we  get a really soft light. “

“The way that I  get the exposure first is I use my live  view and I want to just get the exposure  as if I was going to photograph her  without all these lights. “

“…now I’m going to do is  turn on my TTL. So one of the nice things  about the Profoto lights  that I love is the  TTL function which is just letting me  use auto, really to get the  roundabout power that I want coming out  of my lights. So I’m not doing anything else  but putting on my transmitter and firing  again. “

Become Better Photographer: Using Off Camera Flash to Fake Golden Hour with Vanessa Joy -Vanessa Joy, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, golden hour strobe lightblog, golden hour imitation, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Adorama TV

“I just have light coming in. What I  usually do at this point is I change  from TTL to manual so that now I can  control and tweak my lights how I want  them to be.  I could walk over to my lights to do  that or I can just do that on my  transmitter here. So looking at that  picture I know that I want the backlight  my sun to be a little bit brighter. I’m going to  move the light a little bit closer to  her though, the more soft it’s gonna be. “

“I’ve also set my white  balance to 5600 Kelvin and  that’s because I I have the same balance on the light, which is at 5600 Kelvin.”

*For more information visit AdoramaTV YT page, and of course you can keep up with David on Instagram and Twitter @DavidBergman. LATEST UPDATE: David opens up new IGTV episodes where you can ask him questions live! find out more at http://www.AskDavidBergman.com

Have a tripod? Great! Know how to use it? Even better 🙂 In this episode with photographer David Bergman  Adorama TV we will show you top three tripod tips!

Become Better Photographer: Top Three Tripod Tips with David Bergman -Tutorial, three tripod tips, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

David’s first tip is “to always point one of  the legs towards your subject, the reason  is actually quite simple. By pointing one  leg in the direction you’re shooting, you  can safely stand between the other two  legs without worrying about bumping your  setup and messing everything up. “

Become Better Photographer: Top Three Tripod Tips with David Bergman -Tutorial, three tripod tips, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

David continues: “You  can even put a little stepladder or stand on  a hard case in between those legs. If you  need to get some more height.”

David’s Tip 2 is  “about extending the legs of the tripod.  Keep in mind that the sections get  thinner towards the bottom. If I don’t  need the full height of the tripod I  prefer to extend the higher sections  first, which are thicker. “

Become Better Photographer: Top Three Tripod Tips with David Bergman -Tutorial, three tripod tips, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“It makes me a  bit nervous to put my heavy camera on  top when the bottom is only being  supported by the thinnest part of the  legs. This is especially true if you’re  using a less expensive tripod, that has  very thin plastic legs. “

Lastly, David’s third tip is  “to add some weight to your tripod to  give it more stability.  Sometimes the center post has a hook  built in, or at least holes, so you can  attach something. I keep a bungee cord in  my bag, and like to hang my heavy roller  case from the post. This pulls down from  the center, and gives me a little more  peace of mind that nothing is going to move  while I’m shooting.

Madison In The Rain By Oliver Lum

Madison In The Rain By Oliver Lum

Photographer Oliver Lum about the shoot:

Given that Madison is based on the east coast, when we first started planning our shoot, we wanted to try shooting something that took advantage of the resources and opportunities available in LA.  As we were discussing ideas, Madison sent a few inspiration images shot at the rain room (Hill 7).  As luck would have it, I’d been meaning to try shooting there.  The shoot got off to a rocky start, as technical issues trying to mix strobes from different manufacturers led to almost 30 minutes of lost time.  However, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.  While I usually prefer to shoot natural light, I thought that due to the black walls shooting natural light would be out of the question.  I obviously turned out to be completely wrong.  All of the shots here used only the available light, and a single 3′ x 4′ reflector camera left to bounce some of the window light to lightly fill.  Once we got started, the shoot could not have gone better;  Hazel’s makeup withstood the water better than anyone expected, the light catching off the rain drops accentuated Madison’s incredible physique, and we made off with some great images!

About photographer:

Oliver Lum is a LA / San Diego-based photographer who recently moved from the east coast.  His style mixes the lighting, composition and editorial color grading found primarily in fashion photography with the style, poses, and sets more emblematic of the glamour genre.  An applied mathematician by day, the technical aspects of photography are what originally led him to start shooting.  He credits @5twenty1, @jethroalaba, @dreamstatelive, and Khoa Bui as some of his biggest creative influences.  To contact him for tests or collabs, reach out to him on his IG at @olphotographic.
