NY Studio 3 also known as “exposed brick” studio is one of our brightest stages at New York campus. With additionally embellished exposed brick and concrete walls, this stage is perfect for a rustic, industrial look. Today’s episode with photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV is dedicated to deciphering that weird little graph on the back of your camera that “looks like a mountain range” and is called a histogram!

David shares with us – “… the dictionary definition of a histogram is quote a diagram consisting of rectangles whose area is proportional to the frequency of a variable and whose width is equal to the class interval.”

In other words, it is a simple graph of the brightness of the pixels in your image from pure black on the left to pure white all the way on the right. So how would histogram help you as a photographer? David continues – “… let’s talk for a second about dynamic range. Our eyes and our brain have the amazing ability to see and interpret the darkest darks all the way up to the lightest lights. In other words, I can look at a light sky and a dark building all at once and see not only the detail in the sky but also all the detail in the building!”

“The camera can actually only capture a limited range of these tones. Technically raw files capture a bit more outside of that range but let’s just talk about JPEGs for now. If you expose properly for the sky, the buildings are probably going to be way too dark.”

“At the same time if you decide to expose for the buildings, the sky is gonna be completely blown out. So if you look at your histogram and you have a nice mountain range in the middle of the graph, you’ve successfully exposed properly for all the tones in your image!”

“if it’s all pushed down to the left side, it’s a bit darker. If it’s pushed to the right side, it’s gonna be brighter. Keep in mind – there’s no right or wrong exposure! You might want your image to be dark or light. There’s no general rule as o where that histogram should be.”

So why would you use the histogram instead of just looking at the picture on the back of your screen ? Mr. Bergman answers – “First of all, those screens are not always the most accurate. They usually dialed in to be really punchy and contrasting, so the pictures look really good on them, and you can artificially change the brightness on them as well. Also in bright daylight it might be really hard to see that picture, so you can use the histogram to properly judge your exposure.”

Two Stages In One Day! Evan Richardson Photography

Falling in love with our Art location even more, photographer Evan Richardson had two consecutive sessions in Art 1 and Art 4! Accompanied by two gorgeous models Anthia Mo and Komi Skye, Evan and the creative team have captured some magic!

“About Art 1 shoot: My Creative Director Annie and I were looking for locations in LA that would give us a diverse range of looks to choose from without having to travel all over. When we discovered FD Photo Studios, we loved the numerous options offered, allowing us to brainstorm various ideas that we could shoot, without ever having to leave the building. We ended up picking Art 1 for the large white chair and various wall textures for a glamour shoot with a new Model we wanted to work with, Anthia Mo We were more than able to get the shots we wanted with the equipment provided. Thank you for providing such a creative space for photographers to rent at highly reasonable rates! About Art 4 shoot: We were originally going to try and do a swimwear/athletic shoot on the beach for a new model, but the model was not available during the week, and film permits were not issued for the weekend for the beach we wanted. FD Photo Studios saved us last minute by providing a large open floor plan studio to get suitable shots since we couldn’t make the beach. Art 4 was large, had tons of natural window light, and provided a suitable location for us to change concepts last minute and do an athletic wear concept shoot indoors. Absolutely love the space offered by the Art 4 location, which allowed us to get 3 different looks from one space. Thanks again for letting us use your space!”

The stage:

Stage Art 4, used for this shoot, is notorious for the high-key white industrial design. It has also been recently adorned with wooden floor section and a wall veneer as well as portable blinds, made of dark wood slats. The latest upgrade the stage received was a nice looking cozy egg like chair and a STAR illuminating across its shape! As any of our stages, Art 4 comes equipped with 3 strobe lights and modifiers as well as backdrop paper of black, white and grey color. Tiffany’s Birthday Portraits By James Wilson

Photographer James Wilson (call him Jay) has photographed this beautiful model Tiffany, who wanted to take birthday portraits for her Birthday. James shared with us few words about the shoot – “Not only is she beautiful, the studio, couch made for a perfect setting to pull off these stunning images which she’s asked to have one on canvas!”

“Twin” Shoot Of Nigeria And Tyra

California based fashion photographer Nicholas James had the pleasure of shooting at our beautiful space with wonderful natural light and so much vibe – stage Hill 4.

Few words about the the shoot:

“I met Nigeria and she knew Tyra, who had a similar look to hers and we decided to do a ‘twins’ type shoot. We thrifted a majority of the wardrobe and found these wonderful white knit capes for each model and it worked super well with the white-wash aesthetic of the room. Enjoy the shots, and I look forward to spending more time being creative at FD Studios. ”

About this location:

Stage Hill 4 is one of our largest and brightest stages. Advantageously positioned with the windows facing west and north, this stage gets plenty of sift indirect sunlight in the first half of the day and lots of direct sunbeams in the second half. Hill 4 is furnished with several comfy and photogenic couches of cream and and golden/brown leather color. Jonelly Gomez Shoots Laureline Band

Working with white-color dominated, “heavenly” shots might be a difficult task, if the surrounding environment – like our stage Hill 6, is also white. Catching right exposure to have models blend in just enough but still preserving that “lite” feeling of the photo is where the photographer Jonelly Gomez let her skills shine.
