*For more information visit AdoramaTV YT page, and of course you can keep up with David on Instagram and Twitter @DavidBergman. LATEST UPDATE: David opened up new IGTV episodes where you can ask him questions live! find out more at http://www.AskDavidBergman.com

Sudden change of temperature can significantly jeopardize your photo shoot, since the air moisture inside your camera lens will fog up the glass completely, leaving little to nothing to be done about it after. In this episode with photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV, we explore several ways to remedy this “foggy situation”.

Become Better Photographer: Fighting the Fog with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, fighitng the fog, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

David shares: “once that lens is covered in condensation there’s really not much you can do besides wait it out. You can try to use a microfiber cloth to wipe down the glass but the odds are that your lens is going to immediately fog back up again! By the way do not use your shirt, or something like a napkin, because you might scratch your lens, and that’s a really bad thing.”

Become Better Photographer: Fighting the Fog with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, fighitng the fog, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“Also if the internal glass elements are fogged up then there’s really nothing you can do about it anyway. Give it some time and eventually your gear will acclimate to the weather and be just fine. It could take five minutes or could take an hour, so be prepared to wait.”

“So what you really want to do is prevent your lens from fogging in the first place. The key is to give your gear time to acclimate to the change in weather. So if you’re in a hotel for example, leave it outside of the room, away from the air-conditioning, for thirty minutes before you want to go out. Make sure you open your camera bag so that you don’t block the air flow.”

Become Better Photographer: Fighting the Fog with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, fighitng the fog, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Fighting the Fog with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, fighitng the fog, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“Of course if it’s not safe to leave your bag outside, you could turn off the AC in the room and open the windows. If you’re in your car, leave the camera in your trunk or roll down the windows and just enjoy the fresh air. At the end of the day prevention is the key here. Plan ahead and you’ll be able to see clearly enough to make beautiful shots in any weather. “

Become Better Photographer: Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres

Become Better Photographer: Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres

For us, studio photography heads, playing with different paper backdrops might seem as a necessity. Luckily, photographer Elaine Torres with AdoramaTV is about to share a few Aces in her deck.

Elaine shares with us: “I love to use seamless paper backdrops. I love them because you can find these in so many colors, and there are the cheaper options and also because the material is so versatile allowing you to use these in so many ways than just a backdrop.  So for this reason today I’m going to show you four ways that you can use seamless paper backdrops and studio photography.”

Become Better Photographer: Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres -Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, Elaine Torres, DTLA, blog, Adorama TV

“Obviously we need to start with the default way to use these paper backgrounds because they come in a really nice matte finish. They are also wrinkle free, unless you do it on purpose, and because they come in a variety of different colors or just the basic ones.”

Become Better Photographer: Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres -Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, Elaine Torres, DTLA, blog, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres -Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, Elaine Torres, DTLA, blog, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres -Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, Elaine Torres, DTLA, blog, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres -Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, Elaine Torres, DTLA, blog, Adorama TV

“Next we can mix this up by using two colors. First you can do that by cutting a smaller piece.  For this one I’m going to use one nine-foot roll and I’m going to cut a smaller piece from the same roll in a different color to place a side-by-side.”

Become Better Photographer: Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres -Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, Elaine Torres, DTLA, blog, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres -Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, Elaine Torres, DTLA, blog, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres -Using Paper Backdrops with Elaine Torres, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, Elaine Torres, DTLA, blog, Adorama TV

“Another way we can play with this piece is by playing with the sizing and the placement around the background. So now we can also use the same piece, or another piece of another color and use it to cover the floor. This will make it look like we are shooting on a set instead of just photography seamless background. And you can also have two colors.”

“Now let’s be even bolder and let’s use this paper in a more creative way. And one way that you can do this is by using the paper as a prop or an accessory for the shoot. So what I did today is just wrinkle the paper and then use the paper with the texture.”

We get a lot of questions related to product photography, especially shiny reflective objects like glass or plexiglass. Luckily, photographer David Bergman with AdoramaTV just had a few tips on photographing one of these objects – a wine glass.

Become Better Photographer: Photographing Glass with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, photographing glass, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

David shares: “Lighting reflective objects presents a whole other set of challenges. The first thing to think about is placement. I’ve talked about using Plexiglas under products before, because it gives you a subtle reflection underneath. However another way to do the same exact thing is to just use two identical glasses, put one upside down, and the one you want to photograph on top. Magic!”

Become Better Photographer: Photographing Glass with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, photographing glass, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“Now onto the lighting, when you shoot something like a wine glass, you shouldn’t just pop a straight flash right into it. The surface acts like a mirror and you’ll see small points of light, which is the reflection of your speed light coming right back at you. So what we’re gonna do is put our light right behind the glass, so that we see it in the background.”

Become Better Photographer: Photographing Glass with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, photographing glass, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“If you have a big soft box for your flash, go ahead and use that. But you can also use just a piece of white foam core, or white background paper and direct your flash to hit into that, and it lights it all up.”

Become Better Photographer: Photographing Glass with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, photographing glass, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“When you shoot this way, you can see that the black edges are what defines the shape of the glass. The black is basically a dark reflection of everything else in the room, and it may or may not be dark enough or even symmetrical.”

Become Better Photographer: Photographing Glass with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, photographing glass, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“…so what you can do is use negative fill, and surround your set with black foam core or anything solid like felt, or duvateen, and that’s gonna block out as much of the room as possible.”

Become Better Photographer: Photographing Glass with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, photographing glass, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Photographing Glass with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, photographing glass, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV
“Now you’ll see the black on both sides reflected in the glass, and it defines the shape and adds some drama to the image. Lastly the same thing works in Reverse by using that same black foam core, to create my background, the light slipping out from the sides around it, creates a rim light giving a very cool look. “
