After you take a picture do you immediately look at it on the back of  your camera? Do you do that after every  single photo? Photographer David Bergman suggests you to stop it right now! And here is why.

Mr Bergman shares: “So where is that term ‘chimping’ come from?  Well I first heard it when I worked at  a newspaper in the 1990’s,  and we got our first digital cameras.  We’d be covering basketball games and  all of us were sitting next to each  other and immediately after a play for  the first time ever, we can actually see  the picture on the back of the camera!”

“Back in the film days we had to wait  till we got back to the office, but not  only can we look at our own pictures but  we can look at our competitors pictures!  Also we looked and sounded like a bunch  of primates, oh, so therefore we started  calling it ‘chimping’.”

“Part of being a photographer, is not missing  those little moments in between the big moments, and when you look at the back of  your camera, you’re gonna miss something! Maybe you take a posed picture of your  kids, but then after you do that,  keep shooting, and when everybody has  their guard down, sometimes those are when the  best moments happen.  Another reason not to look at the back  of your camera, is that it tends to make  you lazy, if you’re doing a shoot and you  see that you’ve got a picture that you  really like, you might not push yourself  harder to keep making better and better  pictures.”

“Lastly another reason to just say no to  chimping…. is that it takes you out of the  real-life experiences that are happening  all around you. At a concert for example,  take a few pictures, but then please  don’t spend the next five minutes  looking at those pictures and missing  the concert! Live your life and enjoy the  moments as they happen, and don’t keep  your face buried in the back your camera!”

“Is it ever okay to look at the back  of your camera?  Well of course, at the beginning of a  shoot, when you’re just getting your  settings right, go ahead and use that  tool to check your exposure and make  sure everything is working properly, but  then please just go ahead and set it, and  forget it and keep shooting!”

About the photographer:

My name is Jason Ross Levy and I am a portrait photographer based in the Greater Los Angeles area. I’ve had a camera in my hand since before I even really knew what to do with it.  Taking photos of nature, family vacations, and making silly short films with friends. After pursuing a business degree and working in Corporate America for a number of years, something just didn’t feel right.  It was at that time I quit my 9-5 and jumped head-first into my own creative space. Over 6 years later, my personal style merges my love of film/movies with a desire to capture a person’s true essence and likeness in a single moment. Utilizing a mix of lighting knowledge, motion-array posing techniques, and a dash of comedy, my goal is to create photos with my clients that scream out with their unique personality.

About the photographer:

D. is a New York-based Photographer that loves to tell stories with pictures. Being a self-taught photographer, D. firmly believes that everyone or everything has a story to share. D. comes at photography from an interesting
angle-that of someone who has dyslexia. D. knows first-hand that words aren’t always the best ways to communicate ideas, thoughts,
and feelings. Images know no boundaries-language, age, gender, learning or intellectual disability. Was that heavy enough?-good. You never know which D. you’re going to get. Even Willy Wonka had his intellectual moments. D. loves
people and he loves to tell stories, and at the end of the day, that’s
what he is a storyteller and a damn good one.

Shooting with the long lens is both a lot of fun and responsibility, since this equipment is very sharp and very expensive. However, there are few basic tips that will help you avoid any possible damages. Our favorite photographer David Bergman shares a few tricks.

David explains: “Giant Telephoto Lenses are great for sports and nature photography. If you rent one of these things,  or are lucky enough to own one, you have got to  really be careful not to scratch the glass in anyway. I’m going to show you some  good ways to keep them from getting damaged.”

“So these lenses are really heavy  and you can’t hand hold them while you’re shooting, so you have to use something like a tripod or a monopod. Here’s the thing about monopods. There’s a tiny little screw at the top. These lenses are  worth maybe $10,000 or more and this screw is probably only worth a buck or two. When you  attach to the lens, you want to only pick up the camera by the tripod collar and not by the monopod, otherwise you are going to put a lot of stress on that connection point.”

“It’s also really important to carry these lenses with the glass face-down. I’ve shot a lot of  sports over the years and had to do it in rain and snow and unruly fans  having a big popcorn fight in the stands. You never know what’s going to fall into that lens and  scratch your glass up, so please don’t drive me insane and hold your lens only with the glass facing down.  Both my lens and my sanity will thank you for it.”

“Even if you don’t have one of these  monster lenses, you might have a lens like a 70-200mm or a 100-400mm. With those lenses, I like to  carry them on strap, over my shoulder but the trick is I flip it around the other direction  so the lens comes up tight against my body and lays flat against my leg. Otherwise when  you walk through a crowd of people, it’ll be swinging around and hitting people and  hitting things and you  really don’t want to do that.”

“Whether you’re shooting the Super Bowl, a  wildlife safari, or the International Space Station from your backyard, protect  these long lenses and don’t scratch the glass. Make sure you pick it up by the tripod  collar, carry it with the glass facing down at all times and carry shorter lenses  backwards so they lay flat up against your body.”

Today’s  tip is about working with light stands, also known as C-stands. Being an essential part of your photo set, knowing how to work with the grip equipment, such as C-stands, sand bags, stand knuckles and A-clamps is a must for every photographer. Our favorite NY photographer, David Bergman  explains basic techniques.

Become Better Photographer: Light Stand Etiquette with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Light Stand Etiquette with David Bergman, Adorama TV

Mr. Bergman shares: “we’re using heavy-duty c stands  but this tip is relevant no matter what  kinds of light stands you use especially  when working around people. The most  important thing is safety. You don’t want  your stands to tip over so always make  sure that one of your legs is positioned  right underneath the light face in the  same direction on a c-stand.”

Become Better Photographer: Light Stand Etiquette with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Light Stand Etiquette with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“The big leg,  which is the highest one should always  be the one under the weight. Also a well  positioned sandbag will really help keep  your stands from falling over. If you’re using an arm to position your  lights you’re gonna attach it to your  stand using a head. The trick with the  head is to stand right behind it and  face the same direction as the light. Big knuckle – you always want that thing on the right hand side. That way if the  weight of the light starts to push down  while you’re shooting, it’s actually  gonna tighten the grip instead of  loosening it and prevent it from falling off.”

Become Better Photographer: Light Stand Etiquette with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Light Stand Etiquette with David Bergman, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Light Stand Etiquette with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Light Stand Etiquette with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“Lastly when the other side of that boom arm is sticking straight out it’s  really easy for somebody to walk into it  by accident. What you want to do is cover  it with either a cut open tennis ball a  water bottle or something else soft. Otherwise your mother would have been right when she said someone’s gonna poke  their eye out.”

“So remember keep  everything safe around your stands by  positioning a leg right under the weight  and using a sandbag. Tighten the head so  that it won’t get loose when it slips  and cover the ends of any points with something soft so no one loses an eye.”
