For a close-up macro image, if you ever had hard time getting everything in focus then you are in luck – in this tutorial we will explore a technique called “Focus Stacking”

David Bergman shares his experience shooting with focus stacking: “The other day I was playing around with a macro lens shooting close-up images of everything. Macros  give you a much shallower depth of field than a regular lens, so you just get a sliver that’s in focus, and everything  gets blurrier the further away it is  from the focus plane.”

Become Better Photographer: Focus Stacking with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Focus Stacking with David Bergman, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Focus Stacking with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Focus Stacking with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“It’s a cool, but a couple of times I wanted  everything in focus, from front to back. One way is to close down my aperture to f/32 and try again, but I found the picture still wasn’t ticky-tack sharp, all the way through.”

Become Better Photographer: Focus Stacking with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Focus Stacking with David Bergman, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Focus Stacking with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Focus Stacking with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“That’s when I  remembered a technique called focus stacking, and I’m to tell you it’s super easy to pull off. All you do is shoot multiple overlapping images, with  different areas of the image and focus, and then combine them all together in  the computer after the fact.”

Become Better Photographer: Focus Stacking with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Focus Stacking with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“There’s a  few things you want to make sure to do.  Of course you should use a tripod, couple of reasons. First the images all need to  be as close to lined up as possible.  It’ll just make things easier in post. But more importantly, if you use a low ISO for highest image quality, then your shutter speed might be kind of slow, and you don’t want any camera shake at all.”

Become Better Photographer: Focus Stacking with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Focus Stacking with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“Another thing is that you want to use manual exposure, so your pictures are the same brightness, otherwise it’ll get all funky when you combine them. Lastly I like to use the lenses sweet spot, which is about 2 or 3 stops down from wide open. Most lenses are sharpest right there. So if you’re using a 2.8 lens then you want to be between 5.6 and f/8. Your  mileage may vary, but that’s what you should aim for, If sharpness is your goal.”

“So just start on the front, shoot a  picture, then change your focus to get  the next part in focus, and repeat over  and over, until you’ve covered the entire  subject in the computer. You can use  dedicated software to combine the images,  or just do what I do – use Photoshop!  Simply put all the images on separate  layers in one document, use the ‘Auto  Align’ command to make sure everything is  lined up, and then go to auto blend  layers, and pick stack images.”

This quick lesson is dedicated to improving the composition of the shot and learning how to position the subject of the photo in the frame. Following our favorite AdoramaTV show with David Bergman let’s find out the best tricks from the photographer.

David Bergman takes us to his outdoor photoshoot in New York: “I love to photograph people in the real world. I’ve got Maria out here in New York City and want to shoot her in this environment.”

Become Better Photographer: Pole Position with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Pole Position with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“But while the background adds a lot to  the images it can also take away some of  the focus off her. If I don’t watch very carefully, the biggest mistake beginning photographers make is not looking at the background before pressing the shutter button. There are a lot of other things to worry about including exposure, focus, and facial expression. But  if there’s something distracting back there then all that work might be for nothing. The most common distraction is having a tree or pole coming out of your  subjects head!”

Become Better Photographer: Pole Position with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Pole Position with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“If we’re in the park – there are trees everywhere, if we’re out on the street – there are light poles or telephone poles to deal with! So now that  we see them how do we fix it? The  simplest thing is to either move your  subject or move yourself. Sometimes just a step to the left or right will help that background element to frame your subject instead of slicing right through them.”

Become Better Photographer: Pole Position with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Pole Position with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“If moving left or right doesn’t work, you can also try to move yourself up or down the sky or the ground.”

Become Better Photographer: Pole Position with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Pole Position with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“Another technique is to use a fast lens with a large aperture and blur your background to the point where you  can’t see much detail. And if none of  those options work, then just get in as  tight as you can and get rid of the background completely. You’ll lose the feel of the environment but it’ll be pretty obvious what you want to be seen in your pictures”

“At the end of the day, the key is to slow down and pay attention to every element in your images. Keep your backgrounds from getting distracting, and the focus will be clearly on your subject.”

About the photographer:

Since I can remember I have always loved to be creative. First it was with music, then writing, painting and then photography. What started out as a hobby of expressive creativity, sparked into a small but growing business. My background in Advertising and Marketing, has been a great benefit when it comes to handling the back end of the business. I created my marketing materials, including my logo, and built my website on my own. I have been hands on with my photography since the get-go which has let me focus on my weakness and strengths when it comes to my content. I like to believe I capture more than an image. My goal when you look at my photos, is for you to feel something from it. That is the beauty in art, whichever medium it may be. I love being inspired by new ideas and enjoy collaborating with other artists. I especially like when I have a certain theme or idea in mind and see it come to life in a photo. That’s the beauty in photography-capturing a moment in time and have it be more than a point and shoot.

Natalie, owner of the comapny “Lizett Photography”.

One of few must-have items for every photographer is a polarizer. While being cheap and small, it can bring a fortune of convenience at times when undesired reflections populate your frame. In this tutorial with photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV we learn about the use of this handy gadgets.

Mr Bergman explains: “A circular polarizer or CPL is a very  common type of filter used by outdoor  photographers.”

Become Better Photographer: Polarizers with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Polarizers with David Bergman, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Polarizers with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Polarizers with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“What it does is block polarized light from coming into your lens. You screw one of these things onto the front of your lens and rotate the filter ring, you’ll find that  you can darken blue skies and eliminate  reflections.”

Become Better Photographer: Polarizers with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Polarizers with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“Now can we do this in the  computer? Well, if you’re just looking to darken your sky and make the image more dramatic and contrasting then yes, you can absolutely do that afterwards in the computer. You’ll have a lot more control,  and can pick and choose exactly what you  want to make lighter or darker, but if  you remember I also said the polarizer can eliminate reflections. A very common  use is to take the glare off of water.”

“It  can also get rid of unwanted reflections on glass windows, and other reflective  surfaces like cars. That can be done in  the computer, but it would be a huge pain  in the butt and would never really look right. Polarizers are pretty cheap so go ahead  and pick one up and keep it in your  camera bag for those times when you might need it. If your photos are looking the dark in the sky then I would skip the polarizer and just do it in the computer.”

Vivat Novum In Astoria 9

About the brand:

Vivat Novum (Vee-Vaht Noh-Vum) is a play on the latin acclamation ‘Vivat Rex’, or ‘Long Live the King. ‘Novum’ is the gender-neutral form of ‘Novus’, an adjective meaning new, unusual, or strange. The literal translation of Vivat Novum, ‘Long Live the Unusual’, is a new acclamation for today’s world. Vivat Novum designs versatile statement pieces that are weird, but accessible and elevated, but comfortable. Curiously, ‘Novum’ is also a Latin noun meaning ‘Revolution’. The slow fashion revolution, with its emphasis on ‘less, but better’ and sustainability, is at the core of our values as a brand. This first collection is primarily unisex with an emphasis on the form of the clothes. We wanted a space with lots of natural light that had an airy and worn look to compliment the smooth shapes of the clothing. Astoria 9 was the perfect shoot location. We were able to capture the atmosphere I wanted even on a cloudy day.

If your computer freezes or crashes down unable to process a gazillion of images you just shot – this episode is for you! New York Photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV has a great video with tips and tricks on how to minimize your wait upload time and save your computer from dreadful processing!

Become Better Photographer: RAW Image Conversion with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: RAW Image Conversion with David Bergman, Adorama TV

David teaches: “Digital photography has made it so easy to take lots of pictures. Fast motor drive, and more megapixels can add up to tens or even hundreds of thousands of images over time. That’ll really slow down your computer. If you don’t manage all those files the right way, here’s a tip that will significantly reduce the strain on your computer when working with a lot of photos. I’m hoping you shoot everything in RAW already, and you probably use a program like Lightroom Photoshop or my new favorite “capture one” to process those files. If you put all of your images into those programs, you’ll find that they choke up and slow down over time.”

“The key is to only bring in your best images, so use a separate viewer program to look at your photos first, and bring only the ones that you need into the converter. A program like Photo Mechanic will let you flip through even your highest res images very quickly. I can go through thousands of frames in probably 10 or 15 minutes.”

Become Better Photographer: RAW Image Conversion with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: RAW Image Conversion with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“What I do is multiple passes through my images, picking fewer and fewer photos each time. On a typical concert shoot I could take over 4,000 pictures easily. After doing this process I get it down to about 40 or 50. Now I’ll only take those final images, and bring them in to capture one, where I can take my time and work on each one until they’re perfect. So after a hundred concerts instead of having 4,000 images I’ve only got 40. HUGE difference. So edit down your images and only tone up the ones that you need. Your computer will thank you for it!”
