in this quick tutorial we are going to talk about panning shots and how you set yourself up for the best chance at successfully making  one. Photographer David Bergman from AdoramaTV walks us through the best technique.

Mr. Bergman explains: “When I say panning, I’m talking about moving your camera at the same speed as your subject to make a photo that shows some motion. This is a really cool technique where the subject is relatively steady but the background is flying by.”

Become Better Photographer: Panning Perfection with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Panning Perfection with David Bergman, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Panning Perfection with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Panning Perfection with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“The main camera setting to worry about is shutter speed. You  generally want a slow shutter speed because if it’s too fast, and everything will be frozen, including the background.  Specifically how slow you go depends on  how fast your subject is moving. The correct shutter speed is subjective but the idea is to find a balance so that  your subject is frozen and the background is blurred. A car going slowly  down the street is different than a car during a race. A person on a bicycle is  different than a person walking on the sidewalk, so you need to experiment in each situation, and find what works best for you.”

“Once you know your shutter speed, either by shooting manual, or in shutter priority mode, and make sure you are on continuous focus mode, so that your lens keeps the subject in focus as they move.  You’re going to be shooting a series of  bursts, and you want your subject to be sharp in every frame.”

“Focal length is really important too. When you shoot you’re going to be moving the camera at the same speed as your subject, and try  to keep them in exactly the same spot,  the entire time, while you’re taking  bursts of images. Personally I prefer to do this with a longer lens, because the  movement stays pretty consistent. If you shoot with a wide angle, you have to  speed up dramatically when they get  close to you. It still can be a cool  photo, but I find that my chance of  success is much higher with a long lens.”

“Long lens also tends to blur the background a bit more, which is a look that I like.  In the end the key to making great panning shots, is practice and patience.  Set your camera correctly, and choose the  right lens. But take your time and shoot a lot of frames. All you need is one great one and you can call it a day.”

Keeping your lenses clean is one of the top priorities for every professional photographer. To explore different techniques and methods we would like to tune in to David Bergman’s 2 minute tips on AdoramaTV.

David shares: “One of the most important parts of your camera lenses, is those big  pieces of glass. If they have fingerprints, or dirt on them you’re  going to have a really tough time since that affects the quality of your images.  The glass is covered in special coatings, which can easily be scratched, so yo  want to use a blower to get rid of any actual particles on your lens first.”

Become Better Photographer: Lens Cleaning with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Lens Cleaning with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“Then  to get rid of fingerprints, or anything  else, that might be on that glass, what  you should do is use a proper lens cleaning solution. Spray it onto a  microfiber cloth, and gently wipe the lens.”

Become Better Photographer: Lens Cleaning with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Lens Cleaning with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“Listen don’t say you heard this from me, but if you’re on location and you don’t have the solution with you, I’ve been known to breathe on my lens to moisten it a bit. This has always worked for  me, but I’m clearly telling you not to do  that.. Ok!”

Become Better Photographer: Lens Cleaning with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Lens Cleaning with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“Either way  you still want to use a microfiber cloth to wipe from the middle, continuing out in concentric circles, this pushes any remaining residue to the outside of the  lens. Then repeat that process with the  glass on the other side. In addition if  you’re having any kinds of issues where your lens isn’t communicating properly with the camera, you might have dirty electrical contacts.”

Become Better Photographer: Lens Cleaning with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Lens Cleaning with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“The best way to solve this, is to use a solution that’s made specifically for cleaning contacts, like detoxic gold, or just plain old isopropyl alcohol with a clean soft cloth.”

Become Better Photographer: Lens Cleaning with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Lens Cleaning with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“In a pinch and this is really only  a last resort… you can try to use a pencil eraser. The camera companies do not recommend this because the eraser is abrasive and can easily damage the thin gold plating on the contacts, I would only try that in an emergency, like if you’re in the middle of a shoot, and you don’t have any backup equipment!”

In this quick tutorial we would like to ‘shed light’ on a technique called “on-axis fill”. Photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV shares his thoughts on how to  use on-axis fill to enhance your pictures without changing the overall feel.

Mr. Bergman explains: “I’m using one flash in a softbox, and have it up into the side, which is a pretty traditional look.  I like the way this looks with the light  all coming from one side, because it’s  really dramatic.  It creates strong pitch black shadows on  the other side of his face.”

Become Better Photographer: On Axis Fill with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: On Axis Fill with David Bergman, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: On Axis Fill with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: On Axis Fill with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“What if I  actually wanted to see the rest of his  face and clothes, but don’t want to lose  all of that drama? This is where fill  flash comes in. Fill flash is simply a  second light that I’ll add in to lighten  up, or fill in the shadows. That’ll let me  see what’s going on in there now. I can put the fill light on the opposite side  of my key, but check out what that does.”

Become Better Photographer: On Axis Fill with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: On Axis Fill with David Bergman, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: On Axis Fill with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: On Axis Fill with David Bergman, Adorama TV

It actually changes the whole feel of  the image, and I don’t want to do that. I  like the way I had it, and just want to  lighten the dark areas a little bit, so I  can see them. So I’m going to put my fill  light on the same axis as my camera lens.  Which really just means the light is  coming from the same direction that the  lens is pointing. You can get close  enough by using a big modifier like an  umbrella or a softbox, and put it behind  you, or right over the camera. I’m going to  do it with a ring-light, which is as  on-axis as I can possibly get.”

Become Better Photographer: On Axis Fill with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: On Axis Fill with David Bergman, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: On Axis Fill with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: On Axis Fill with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“The other  thing to consider is intensity. If I power the fill anywhere near the same  brightness as my key light, it’s going to wash out all the shadows, and give me a  boring flat photo. So the idea is to power the fill way down, so that it just begins to fill in those shadows. There’s  no rule for this, but two or three stops underexposed is a good place to start.  I’ll usually turn off my key light and  test just the fill, so I can really see  how much light I’m getting from it, then  I bring the key back in.”

The idea here is  to still have shadows, because that  creates the depth, shape, and drama, but if I don’t want them to be completely black,  I’m going to dial in some on-axis fill to  taste, and get exactly the look I want.”
