This tip shared by photographer David Bergman and  AdoramaTV  helps anticipate what’s coming into your frame as you shoot pictures, regardless whether you shoot with your right eye or your left eye.

David shares: “Most people tend to press their eye up to the viewfinder and close their other eye especially in bright daylight. It’s nice to block out the light coming in from the outside and focus on the image that you’re shooting. However,  I’m gonna recommend that in some situations you should leave your other eye open.”

“It takes a little getting used to and can be disorienting at first but there are a couple of good reasons to do this. The main one being you can see what’s happening outside of your frame if you’re shooting action like sports or even people walking around in Times Square. You’ll be able to see what’s coming and will be prepared to take the picture as soon as the subject enters your frame.

If you’re a portrait shooter there’s another reason to leave both eyes open. When your face is buried behind a big camera you can’t really interact with your subjects. I still like to occasionally bring the camera away from my face and talk but having my other eye open when I shoot creates just a little more connection.”

“As a random aside and just for fun – take your zoom lens and play around with the focal length while looking through the viewfinder with both eyes open at around 70 mm on a full-frame camera, which is about the same focal length as your vision. You’ll get this really trippy 3d effect look! I’m no optometrist but I think it’s because your eyes can’t converge properly on the same subject when only one is looking through the camera lens.”

Join us in learning about new ways to “empower” your off-camera flash light with photographer David Bergman, AdoramaTV, and a couple of strobes!

David shares: “I’m a really big fan of using speed light flashes off-camera for things like portraiture and event photography. The reason is because they’re small and relatively affordable. For example, in a system like the newest Canon they have radio transmitters built right in and you can control them remotely from the camera without having to access each strobe individually.”

BBP: Studio Strobe Speedlite Synchronicity with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, BBP: Studio Strobe Speedlite Synchronicity with David Bergman, Adorama TVBBP: Studio Strobe Speedlite Synchronicity with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, BBP: Studio Strobe Speedlite Synchronicity with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“But if you’ve been using small strobes for a while you’ve probably figured out the one big limitation – power. These things certainly pack some punch for their size but they can’t give you the same amount of light that a studio strobe does.”

BBP: Studio Strobe Speedlite Synchronicity with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, BBP: Studio Strobe Speedlite Synchronicity with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“This  can be a challenge when shooting outdoors or using something like high speed sync. The only way around it before was to gang up multiple flashes in  one light modifier. That works great but gets expensive really quickly! in the past if you want to upgrade to big studio lights but still wanted to mix in your speed lights, there were some challenges getting everything to work together. You couldn’t use TTL for example but more importantly you couldn’t shoot with one dedicated radio system, and you can forget about high-speed sync…

Well I’m happy to say that ‘times they are a-changin’. There are multiple options now to upgrade the  studio strobes while mixing in your radio triggered flashes. Profoto makes really nice high-end units that have radio triggering built-in and TTL flash.”

“There are also less expensive options like the new or Orlit Rovelight RT610, which  gives you 600 watt seconds of power – about three or four more shots than a  speed light. If you already have a Canon or Nikon wireless systems, then this thing  is an absolute no-brainer. You can trigger it either with your existing radio transmitter or with another speed transmitter if you don’t have one. But the coolest thing is that you can shoot high-speed sync so you get much more power in that mode than you’ve ever had before.”

If you’ve just started experimenting with off-camera flash and probably realized you need some light modifiers – this quick tutorial will help! A few tips from our favorite New Yorker – Photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV.

Diving into the light mechanics of using the flash with the umbrella Mr Bergman explains: “The idea is to make that tiny little flash  into a big soft source so that the light is more flattering. The easiest way to start is by using an umbrella. They’re  inexpensive and all you need is a standard adapter.”

BBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, BBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman, Adorama TVBBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, BBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman, Adorama TVBBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, BBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“So you have a place to slide the umbrella post and mount your flash but now is when you have some decisions to make. There are two ways  you can shoot.

The first is called ‘shoot-through’, which literally means you point the flash into the open umbrella and shoot through it so that the light hits your subject.”

BBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, BBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman, Adorama TVBBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, BBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“The second is called ‘reflective’ where you point the flash away from your subject. It hits the light into the umbrella and then  reflects back onto your subject.”

BBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, BBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman, Adorama TVBBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, BBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“Neither method is wrong – they’re just different. Why would you choose one or the other? In general, shoot-though umbrellas will give you a softer light because you can get it in closer to your subject. You don’t have that long metal pole sticking into the frame, so you can really get that light in extremely close, which makes it a very big relative light source. And since it’s so close, you won’t lose much power from your flash, which helps if you’re outdoors and trying to overpower the Sun with a small speed light.”

BBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, BBP: Shoot Through and Reflective Umbrellas with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“With reflective  umbrellas you have to keep them further back. You will find that most of them have a silver interior and a black backing. This makes them more efficient than  shoot-through and they kick back a lot of light into your subject. They’re really better suited though for a group shot when you need to cover a bigger area.

So which one would you buy? Well it really depends on what you shoot – for single portraits shoot-throughs is the way to go. If you need to light bigger areas then reflective is a good place to start. No matter which  one you go with, you’ll find that you’ll collect a few different types and sizes  over the years and will hopefully always  have access to the right modifier!”

The mystery of the closest celestial body known to us as the Moon is a capitative subject for the humanity. Capturing that mystery has been a task that inspired many photographers around the world for generations. And many of them faced technical difficulties on getting a decent picture. Today Photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV will share a few tips to get that breathtaking shot of the Moon.

Mr. Bergman shares: “The first thing you want to do is figure out your composition. While it might be easy enough t  take a shot of the moon all by itself, I recommend you frame it with something in the foreground.  It’s gives it a sense of place. Even if it’s just a random building  or a tree, it will enhance your image significantly.”

Become Better Photographer: Shoot for the Moon with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Shoot for the Moon with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“If you do decide to photograph  the moon by itself, use the longest lens you can so you can eliminate most of the dark space around the moon. Even better when there is still a little bit of light in the sky so you can have some color around it.  If you are shooting tight it’s nice when it’s not a full moon. The side light from the sun will help to bring out the detail on the surface  of the moon.  You can see all of the craters  as well, if it’s lit from the front.”

Become Better Photographer: Shoot for the Moon with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Shoot for the Moon with David Bergman, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Shoot for the Moon with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Shoot for the Moon with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“Finally shoot on manual exposure  because you camera’s meter  can easily be fooled by the big areas of light and darkness. The moon is much brighter  than you think! A good rule of thumb for guessing exposure is called  “Looney 11″ rule. Set your aperture at f11 and then match you shutter speed to your ISO.

For example if you are shoot at  a 500th/sec then you want  an ISO of 500 at f11.  Of course you should adjust to taste from there but it’s a good starting point if you are not using a light meter.”
