How to light TABLE TOPS for product photography with LensProToGo

How-to-light-TABLE-TOPS-for-product-photography-with-LensProToGo

Last time we explored the food photography technique using just the natural light. Today we will cover how to light up the table top for a any product photography, whether it is food or accessories, jewelry, etc. In the studio with “Cinematography Database” and “LensProToGo” we are about to explore and three-light setup, where two lights are shooting into overhead diffuser to give that shadowless soft light at the 90 degree angle. The third light is pointing from the top at the 45 degree angle to create a perfect sharp drop shadow. How to light TABLE TOPS for product photography with LensProToGo -Tutorial, tabletop lighting, table top light, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, product shots, Product Photography, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog This, classic table top setup is very easy to implement.  Let’s see how it is done.

The Setup

In this shot we are using a tripod Manfrotto 536 with a Kessler Pocket Jib on top. The camera is craned from the top, looking straight down. How to light TABLE TOPS for product photography with LensProToGo -Tutorial, tabletop lighting, table top light, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, product shots, Product Photography, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog How to light TABLE TOPS for product photography with LensProToGo -Tutorial, tabletop lighting, table top light, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, product shots, Product Photography, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog The first light that shoots up into diffusion is Fiilex Matrix.  The second light is Fiilex Q1000 doing exactly the same thing from the other angle. First, let’s turn off the fill lights shooting straight into a diffuser. How to light TABLE TOPS for product photography with LensProToGo -Tutorial, tabletop lighting, table top light, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, product shots, Product Photography, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog You can see how the shadows from the spot light are a lot darker now, as sharp. The whole image is a bit more contrasty than it was before. Now let’s see how the soft light look without the spot light. How to light TABLE TOPS for product photography with LensProToGo -Tutorial, tabletop lighting, table top light, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, product shots, Product Photography, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog This setup is giving us a really clean, pretty much shadowless image. For some it might already a perfect shot, needless of any addition. For those who want to take it a step further we are going to do some variations, playing with the color and the contrast.

Variations

Now we are going to have an orange key + blue fill light setup, thus imitating “the sun and the sky” pair setup. How to light TABLE TOPS for product photography with LensProToGo -Tutorial, tabletop lighting, table top light, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, product shots, Product Photography, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog To have this setup, we dial our two overhead shooting lights into 6000k light temperature for blue color. And we have a key light, which is the sun at 3200k temperature. How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com

How-to-photograph-food-with-Lensprotogo.com

Did you know that all our stages come with tables and chairs useful for catering. Each stage also has a mini fridge inside so you could store your perishables for a long day shoot. So having a lunch or a dinner at our studio is not a problem. But what about photographing food? Is it doable? Is it easy to shoot? Today we are going to share some tips of how to photograph food using just an ambient light. With lensprotogo.com we will go from something that looks like this How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog   to something that looks like this. Mood

Today we are going to shoot a bread bawl. After you figured out what product you are shooting, you would need to decide what mood you are going for. Do you want it more bright and happy or do you want it more dark and moody? How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blogHow to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog Once you settled on the mood, you can start thinking about props and and how to build a set around the theme.

Light

In the example we move a table closer to the window to get that ambient light on the table top. How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog Like we aforementioned, today we will only use natural light for the setup. Next time we will touch upon the tabletop artificial lighting, so stay tuned!

SOFT SHADOWS.

The big thing is that you always want to have really soft shadows. So either use a diffuser to soften the direct sunlight or shoot with indirect sun or house light. It is very important, so pay attention to this step! How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog

Props and backgrounds

Knowing the stye that you want to go will really help picking up props and a background for the shoot. In this example the photographer uses a big wooden cutting board to bring the rustic vibe into a picture. Once the background is chosen, now we can start building the dish. How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog When building the dish, think about what ingredients might go into it, what the cultural nuances might be implemented, or how you want to present that to your viewer. Also think about where you want it to take place. Do you want it in the kitchen “being cooked” or do you want it at the dining table ready to be “enjoyed by the people”? We picked up some juicy looking parsley, How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog pumpkin seeds, How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog garlic and small gourds, How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog a bread bowl, How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog and some hemp fabric for the texture of the picture, How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog and lastly a small jar with pumpkin seeds. How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog Please keep in mind that sometimes it is better to keep it simple and use as less props as possible. In this example though our props of choice will help create the mood and enhance the feel of the picture.

Angle

Before you start placing all items on the table, think about what angle and what direction you are going to be shooting at. The most popular ones are 45 degrees coming up from the side or 90 degrees coming down straight from the top. How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blogHow to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog The direction you should choose to shoot from must be against the light. It means that you cannot be on the same side the light comes from. How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog When it comes to placing props in the frame, make sure nothing blocks the main sight of the dish. So if you have bigger props than the main dish, place props behind it. How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blogHow to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog Another great idea is to lock the camera on a tripod and build the set towards it. That way you do not have to worry about changing the composition each time you change the camera position. Within the frame, it is always a good idea to keep your main dish in one of the thirds’ intersections or dead in the center of the viewfinder.   Keep in mid where these photos are going as well. If your target is Instagram then think in 4 by 5 format. If it is for youtube or something other than 16:9 might a better fit.

Icing on the cake

Add a little bit of action to your shot. Have somebody scooping the soup or sprinkling some ingredients into a dish. It can really add a lot into your final shot.   How to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blogHow to photograph food with Lensprotogo.com -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Lensprotogo.com, How To, gear, gallery, food photography, food photographer, food photo, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blogWatch the full tutorial video for Lensprotogo.com here:

Few words about the brand:
“We are located in Scottsdale, AZ and were in need of a different location for our activewear and lounge photo shoot. FD Photo Studios had the perfect option for stages and we chose HILL 3 for its wide open space and large windows along with an excellent choice of seating. Our photographer was Crystal Maldonado and model Austin Scoggin from DT Model Management. Along with BodyAware’s stylist and coordinator Anna Volina, assisted by Tess Priselac, Head Design Associate.
We had an array of looks to shoot that incorporated some of our new ribbed bodysuits. Along with a range of shorts and our latest Rip Stop Hoodie and Mesh Bomber Jacket. 96% of our designs are made in the US and/or designed in house. This allows us to continuously reinvent ourselves, produce more unique styles, and keep up with the trends along with creating our own. At Body Aware we are always keeping our customers guessing and using unique fabrics such as rip stop, mesh, satin, and many others that our customers have come to love. The company originally started in 1988 in the UK and the nostalgia is still seen in our designs along with incorporating more modern and minimalistic designs. BodyAware has grown into an international company with an array of styles that caters to the various tastes that have made Body Aware into an eclectic men’s underwear company it is today. “

I’ve trekked monumental ice glaciers in Alaska, zip-lined through the dense jungle tree tops of Costa Rica, flown through the air on a flying trapeze, lived on a boat for a month night scuba diving in pitch black water, camped out in a desert with a clan of strangers practicing Kundalini Yoga, and most recently, competed in the grueling Tough Mudder British Special Forces obstacle race.
