How To Shoot Video with Saurav Sinha

How-To-Shoot-Video-with-Saurav-Sinha

As our stages are getting booked for fast growing video production demands, it would be great to provide some tips on how to properly shoot video with DSLR cameras. Saurav Sinha, the Youtube guru for video production will share his tips on settings you have to watch out for before the cam is rolling. How To Shoot Video with Saurav Sinha -youtube channel, White balance, Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shutter speed, shot at FD Photo Studio, Saurav Sinha, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, ISO, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, aperture

FRAMES PER SECOND

FPS or frames per second is the amount of individual frames camera shoots per second of rolling. The classic standard format 24fps is what cinematographers widely used before digital cameras came on the market. So if you want to have a movie like look of your video – 24fps is your choice of setting. How To Shoot Video with Saurav Sinha -youtube channel, White balance, Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shutter speed, shot at FD Photo Studio, Saurav Sinha, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, ISO, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, aperture In most digital cameras there are other options available – How To Shoot Video with Saurav Sinha -youtube channel, White balance, Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shutter speed, shot at FD Photo Studio, Saurav Sinha, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, ISO, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, aperture The rule of thumb is the higher the fps number, the smoother the picture. Also, if you are into  slow motion,  shooting at 60fps and 120fps allows you later to slow down the video in post and enjoy breathtaking smooth slow mo effect. How To Shoot Video with Saurav Sinha -youtube channel, White balance, Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shutter speed, shot at FD Photo Studio, Saurav Sinha, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, ISO, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, aperture

SHUTTER SPEED

There is one rule you have to follow when setting the shutter speed.  fps x 2 = shutter speed. For some set fps numbers like 60fps there might be exact shutter speed setting. In that case just set the closest number. Here is the chart that Saurav Sinha kindly presents: How To Shoot Video with Saurav Sinha -youtube channel, White balance, Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shutter speed, shot at FD Photo Studio, Saurav Sinha, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, ISO, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, aperture

APERTURE

Aperture has to be set according to the scene and accented subjects. Its creative application allows separate foreground from background by blurring the latter. The smaller F number you would have the more blurry the background would be. So if you really want to separate the subject from background shoot at F1.8 – F4. How To Shoot Video with Saurav Sinha -youtube channel, White balance, Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shutter speed, shot at FD Photo Studio, Saurav Sinha, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, ISO, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, aperture To capture the background bump up the F number to F8 and higher.

ISO

To set this parameter right Saurav Sinha suggests using histogram. When camera’s histogram is extremely to the right, the image is overblown. In this case decrease the ISO number to darken up the frame. How To Shoot Video with Saurav Sinha -youtube channel, White balance, Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shutter speed, shot at FD Photo Studio, Saurav Sinha, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, ISO, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, aperture The same goes for the opposite – if histogram is extremely to the left, the picture is too dark. Increase ISO number to an optimal level. How To Shoot Video with Saurav Sinha -youtube channel, White balance, Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shutter speed, shot at FD Photo Studio, Saurav Sinha, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, ISO, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, aperture

FOCUSING

Although nowadays digital cameras are very precise on auto focus and might have dozens of focus points at once and change it continuously, Saurav suggests to switch to manual focus. With manual focus are more versatile creatively. Changing focus from one subject to another intentionally creates very catchy effect. Plus with manual focus you will prevent the “focus hunting” – process of the camera trying to figure out what to focus on when there is a motion in the frame. How To Shoot Video with Saurav Sinha -youtube channel, White balance, Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shutter speed, shot at FD Photo Studio, Saurav Sinha, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, ISO, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, aperture

WHITE BALANCE

Depending on ambient or strobe light condition the camera might perceive colors in yellowish or blueish shades, which is a very undesirable effect and takes forever to get rid off in post production. How To Shoot Video with Saurav Sinha -youtube channel, White balance, Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shutter speed, shot at FD Photo Studio, Saurav Sinha, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, ISO, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, aperture   How To Shoot Video with Saurav Sinha -youtube channel, White balance, Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shutter speed, shot at FD Photo Studio, Saurav Sinha, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, ISO, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, aperture To aid the situation use the grey card in the frame to set the system of coordinates and save yourself hours of work in post.

COMPOSITION

Even with on-point camera setting the outcome might still come out bad. In the last article we explored 6 rules for video recording, which are heavily based on setting hight composition techniques. Among them the rule of thirds, non-center framing, 180 degree rule and more. Applying these will help your overall footage look great. How To Shoot Video with Saurav Sinha -youtube channel, White balance, Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shutter speed, shot at FD Photo Studio, Saurav Sinha, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, ISO, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, aperture

LEVEL THE CAMERA

Making sure your camera is set straight vertical/horizontal before start rolling might seem like an obvious advice. Nevertheless, mistakes like that happen all the time; the frame is tilted to the side and you have to straighten it up in post, zoom in and eventually loose the resolution of the picture. 6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H

6-Rules-Of-Video-(and-photo)-Composition-with-B&H

Learning 6 rules of video composition with Doug Guerra from B&H is not only applicable to video production but also to photography composition (at least in some cases). 6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition The great thing about these rules is that it can be applied for a vast variety of styles, weather it’s interviews, vlogs, creative production, or any other application. Framing the subject generally relies on the artistic vision yet there are still some guidelines that are widely accepted because, well, they make your work look better.

THE RULE OF THIRDS

The rule of thirds is the most popular and one of the most essential concepts one should always keep in mind. It divides the screen onto 3 by 3 grid, where lines and intersections are most desirable positions to place your subject into. 6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition  6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition When framing subject the eyes should line up on the top of those lines. 6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition

AVOID CENTER FRAMING

Although not that sound for photography where a subject is usually placed in the center to intentionally draw attention to, avoiding the center in video production is generally a good idea. It smoothes out the flow of the story, allowing the viewer to focus on the continuity of the relationship between all subjects/elements rather than focusing on one. 6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition Another thought to keep in mind is the direction in which the subject looks or talks. You generally don’t want to place an actor on the same side that they are facing as it creates to much negative space on the opposite side. 6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition Of course, if you intentionally want to put your subject on the spot light, then go ahead, dead center is your friend.

THE 180° RULE

One of the most important rules to establish continuity between shots is the 180 degree rule. 6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition Imagine there is a line between two subjects that are speaking to each other. When filming opposite angles, the camera should never cross the line in order to film the other angle. The camera should always shoot on one side of the line in order to maintain continuity. 6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition  6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition If you put the camera on the opposite side the character would be looking in wrong direction. 6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition  6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition

HEADROOM

Headroom is the amount of space given between the actor’s head and very top of the frame. Depending of the genre of the film, this rule might be applied strictly of loosely. For documentaries and interviews usually you want to be strict and leave a nice amount of headroom. For feature films or other creative video production this rule is loosely applied. 6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition But the general guideline is to leave at least some headroom, unless you shoot at a very close distance of course. 6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition

CREATE DEPTH

The depth of the frame is achieved through the balance of what is happening on the foreground versus background of the scene. You would want to position your subject anywhere in-between and have them move through the frame, not across it. Following this rule helps create much more interesting, eye catching frame. 6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition  6 Rules Of Video (and photo) Composition with B&H -Videography, Tutorial, studio videography, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Doug Guerra, blog, B&h, 6 rules of video composition

KNOW WHEN TO BREAK RULES

Lastly, there is an all important lesson in life stating that “all rules have to be broken”. Knowing how to break a rule allows you to convey scenes in different ways. However breaking the rule has to be supported by the idea behind it. So if you break it, ask yourself “how does it help the scene?” and why you want to do it.   Watch the entire video on B&H Youtube channel:

A very particular type of wedding photography – the one where the new-wed couple has an activity/theme that connects them together. Whether it is fitness passion, or and farm building, that glue that holds the bride and groom together is the sheer thing Wanderlast Creatives catch on their cameras and develop the theme for the entire photoshoot. The props, models and even the color balance of photos tells you the story of autumn, nature, and the relationship. Stage Art 1 was a choice of location for this session. Adorned with features like white grand piano and three step podium this stage is a tool of versatility, provider of great natural light, benchmark of industrial Downtown minimalistic design.  This space has its windows facing South and West and gets beautiful direct light during the PM hours, and great open-shaded light in the morning. Using strobes? No worries, we include 3 strobe lights in the hourly rate along with black, white and grey background available. Take a look at Stage Art 1 HERE to see what equipment is included in the hourly rate, as well as its availability and pricing.

Stage Hill 4 is one of our largest and brightest stages. Advantageously positioned with the windows facing west and north, this stage gets plenty of sift indirect sunlight in the first half of the day and lots of direct sunbeams in the second half. Hill 4 is furnished with several comfy and photogenic couches of cream and and golden/brown leather color. As with any our other stages a standard package of three basic backdrops and three lights is available within the stage already. For more information visit stage Hill 4 on our website.
