WATCH THE FIRST PART OF   4 REASONS TO BECOME PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER.

What is it that pushes you into unknown universe of photography to face your imperfections and transcend into a better visionary? Some start to simply make a buck, some want to satisfy their inner voice. In this episode we asked 4 Professional Photographers about their reasons and motivations of profession pursuit.

The full interview is available of YOUTUBE.  For your convenience, here is the transcript of it as well.

Molly Pan @mollypanphotography : I’ve always liked taking pictures of people. I’ve never really been into landscapes, or city scapes, or anything like that. I just think that we’re so interesting, and I’ve always felt that way. So when I got into acting, I was looking for a headshot photographer, and I was like, well, I could either spend $500 to get head shots, or I can spend $700 and get myself a kit, and do it myself.

I’m a super DIY, do it yourself kind of person, so that’s what I decided to do, and that was the beginning of this seven, eight, nine year long journey to where I am now.

Carlo Parducho @carloparducho : I first started working as a junior graphic designer right after college. My task was to Photoshop backgrounds of images, basically eight hours a day. So I was working with images all the time. On my down time, I just look at different kinds of pictures, because I like looking at pictures. It’s a progression, if you’re working with images, you like pictures, you’re looking for a way to increase, or to do more jobs, then you just pick up photography.

Karina Dobra @karinadobraphoto : I’ve been interested in photography since I was a little child, basically a little girl. I picked up a camera when I was eleven years old, it was my parents film camera, Olympus, and I was trying to do Rupertosh, like a story, dementiary story, about castles, about the castles. About a little town, a little medieval town.

Bekah Wriedt @bekahwriedt : I decided to do photography because it opened up a lot of doors for creativity and for relationships and I really value relationships and be able to create an art that connects with people.

Become Better Photographer: Mark Wallace shows 3 ways to control focus

Become-Better-Photographer:-3-ways-to-control-focus

In the last post with David Bergman we learned to slow down, to analyze your shot, to shoot manual. We also learned that those conditions help foster your creativity and push your artistic boundaries without any help of hefty camera features. Shooting with manual Aperture in particular gives you a new playground called depth of field. But is aperture the only element of controlling what’s in focus?

In this episode with Mark Wallace from Adorama TV, we explore 3 WAYS HOW TO CONTROL WHAT’S IN FOCUS with help of lively Nesli Avci.

Become Better Photographer: Mark Wallace shows 3 ways to control focus -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, natural light, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, focal length, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, depth of field, blog, Adorama TV

Aperture

There are three ways to control your depth of field. The first, aforementioned, is aperture. The other two are focal length and distance to subject.

Become Better Photographer: Mark Wallace shows 3 ways to control focus -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, natural light, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, focal length, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, depth of field, blog, Adorama TV

The widest aperture (1.4, 2.4, 3.5, or else lowest) will give you the most shallow depth of field, where your background will be a sea of blur with no details to identify.

Become Better Photographer: Mark Wallace shows 3 ways to control focus -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, natural light, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, focal length, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, depth of field, blog, Adorama TV Become Better Photographer: Mark Wallace shows 3 ways to control focus -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, natural light, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, focal length, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, depth of field, blog, Adorama TV

Open your lens to the widest aperture and take a shot.

Become Better Photographer: Mark Wallace shows 3 ways to control focus -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, natural light, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, focal length, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, depth of field, blog, Adorama TV

Notice how blurry the background is. The building behind is almost indistinguishable from a vague generic wall. Now let’s try shooting with the opposite setting – closing your lens to the biggest f-stop. Don’t forget that it will make your picture much darker since less light will come through the lens. To balance it out, increase your ISO.

Become Better Photographer: Mark Wallace shows 3 ways to control focus -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, natural light, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, focal length, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, depth of field, blog, Adorama TV  Become Better Photographer: Mark Wallace shows 3 ways to control focus -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, natural light, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, focal length, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, depth of field, blog, Adorama TV

Take a shot!

Now everything is in much better focus. This technique is pretty well known and is not a surprise to most photographers. Let’s take a look at the second technique:

Focal Length

What if you keep your f-stop the same but instead you will change your lens and shoot with 21mm instead of 50mm?

Doing exactly that Mark Wallace keeps both lenses at f/3.4 and snaps the same frame, at the same distance.

Become Better Photographer: Mark Wallace shows 3 ways to control focus -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, natural light, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, focal length, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, depth of field, blog, Adorama TV

Shot above is 50mm, f/3.4 lens. Notice the degree of blur behind the model. Now let’s switch to a wider lens – 21mm and shot lovely Nesli.

Become Better Photographer: Mark Wallace shows 3 ways to control focus -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, natural light, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, focal length, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, depth of field, blog, Adorama TV

at the same f/3.4 aperture of course!

Become Better Photographer: Mark Wallace shows 3 ways to control focus -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, natural light, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, focal length, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, depth of field, blog, Adorama TV

The blur of the background has drastically decreased with the wider lens, at the same aperture, same distance. Speaking of the latter.

Distance to Subject.

The third way to manipulate your depth of field is to walk back and forth to your subject, with fixed aperture, same lens. To experiment with this technique,  turn your focus wheel to either full-left or full-right  extreme position and move towards the model to catch her in focus.

Here is the example of “very close” extreme of focus.

Become Better Photographer: Mark Wallace shows 3 ways to control focus -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, natural light, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, focal length, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, depth of field, blog, Adorama TV

The background is nice and blurry. Now lets turn the focus to the opposite extreme. In our example that is walking further away from the model to catch her in focus.
