Tips for Great Model Photo Shoot Theme Ideas

bohemian look - Tips for Great Model Photo Shoot Theme Ideas

Updated 5.1.2023

To create high-quality model test photography, it’s important to have access to a well-equipped photo studio for rent. A rental photo studio can provide the perfect setting for these photoshoots, with ample space, lighting options, and backdrops available to create a variety of looks. If you’re searching for a photo studio near me, consider looking for one that specializes in model test photography to ensure that you have all the necessary equipment and expertise available to you. With a rental photo studio, you’ll have access to everything you need to create stunning images that showcase a model’s potential and versatility.

With the rise of social media and online portfolios, it’s more important than ever for models to have a strong and diverse set of photos. To stand out in a crowded market, models should consider incorporating unique themes into their photo shoots. Whether it’s a vintage Hollywood glamour theme, an edgy fashion theme, or a playful beach theme, incorporating a creative concept can help your images stand out and showcase your versatility as a model. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and experiment with different ideas. Just make sure to choose a theme that aligns with your personal brand and appeals to your target audience. With a little planning and preparation, you can create stunning and memorable model photos that will set you apart from the competition.

If you’re thinking about renting a photo studio soon for a photo shoot, you are probably racking your brain for good model photo shoot theme ideas. Coming up with a fresh and exciting idea will help you put the spotlight on the models and their clothing and accessories as well as your photography skills, so you should definitely start looking for ideas. These tips can help you come up with the perfect theme for your upcoming shoot.

Nautical

A great idea for spring or summer but fine for anytime as well, the nautical theme can be lots of fun for a fashion photo shoot. The models can dress in navy blue and white and can wear clothing with nautical-themed accents, and you can decorate the area behind and around the models with anchors, rope and other props that remind you of the sea.

Movies

There are so many directions that you can go in if you want to implement the movies into your fashion photo shoot. For example, you can go for an old Hollywood look, with an emphasis on traditional clothing and props in shades of deep red, gold and black. If you would like to try something different, you can even get ideas from your favorite TV shows or movies and use them as themes for the shoot. This will work especially well with much-loved, old classic movies or newly popular television shows.

Bohemian

A lot of people love the calm, laid-back and breezy bohemian look, and it’s easy to implement into your fashion photo shoot. The models can be dressed in loose-fitting and comfortable yet cute skirts, pants, button-down shirts and other fun and casual pieces, and women can wear their hair in messy waves or braids. Nature-themed props often work well with the bohemian style, and you can implement props like old wooden swings and more for a fun look for your photographs.

 Playing Games

Some photographers have pulled off unique yet beautiful photography sessions with their models by focusing on a game-related theme. For example, you can use enormous chess pieces or other game pieces as props, and you can even use enormous replicas of game boards as backdrops. Clothing for the models can come in similar colors as the game pieces.

Seasonal

Using the seasons to help you choose the perfect theme for your fashion photo shoot is a great way to create a relevant scene and to take pictures that are sure to be festive. In the springtime, you can bring in pretty spring flowers, and the models can wear pastel colors and even put flowers in their hair. During the fall, it’s a good idea to bring in colors like brown, dark red and orange, and you can use leaves, pumpkins, gourds and more as props. In the winter, gorgeous, snowy backgrounds and seasonal décor can function beautifully as your theme, and you can surely think of ideas for summer that include sunglasses, beach chairs, sand, sand buckets and other seasonal props.

Holidays

The holidays can give you tons of inspiration and decoration for your photo shoot. With hearts and cupids for Valentine’s Day, bats and black cats for Halloween and candy canes or Santa Claus for the winter, you can use seasonal decorations and cues as your guide for a wonderful fashion photo shoot.

Sports

People get crazy during sporting seasons, so use sports like football, soccer, baseball or another favorite sport as your guide when coming up with your theme. You can set it up so that the models are playing the sports, or you can put them on the “sidelines” in team colors for a local team. You can even look at ideas from non-traditional sports if you want to; swimming, running, cheerleading, volleyball and other sports can all make awesome themes for your shoot.

Going Wild

If you want to do something bold and daring during your shoot, you can try a wild, safari or jungle theme. Think about cheetah and zebra prints, feathers and more for a bold, unique and exciting backdrop for your photographs.

Animals

Many people swoon over adorable animals, and using them in your photo shoot can make for a cute, sweet and irresistible theme. For example, you could have a model hold an adorable kitten or walk several cute dogs while showing off his or her outfit. You can also get a bit wilder with creatures like snakes, iguanas, rabbits and more.

The Future

Many people are excited by the futuristic look, so consider implementing space suits, aliens and other props “from the future” into your photo shoot theme for a blast to the future. You can use favorite movies as inspiration, or you can come up with your own ideas about what the future will look like.

Nature

Show your love of nature with a natural-themed photo shoot. You can take this in just about any direction; would you like to focus on beautiful mountains and waterfalls, or would you prefer to have prairie-style shots? Do you love the look of the desert, or would you like to use a theme from the woods? Regardless, natural settings with laid-back, comfortable clothing can be the perfect choice for a fashion photo shoot, and you can take your shoot into many different directions while using only what nature has to provide for you.

Choosing the right theme for your photo shoot is imperative if you want your photographs to turn out as perfectly as possible, but these tips for coming up with model photo shoot theme ideas can help you come up with the perfect theme. Plus, you can always look into renting a photo studio at FD Photo Studio if you want the perfect venue for your big photo shoot. At FD Photo Studio in downtown Los Angeles, you can enjoy a conveniently-located, spacious studio with top-quality, professional equipment, and you don’t have to worry about high prices; you can rent the studio by the hour for a very reasonable rate, which can save you money and leave you time to think about which exciting theme you would like to use for your big shoot.

Singer Tinashe has been making waves in the music industry for years, but recently she made a splash in the world of fashion photography as well. The talented artist was photographed by Tyler Patrick Kenny for the cover of Numero Netherlands, in a stunning underwater photo shoot that took place at the FD Photo Studio’s Olympic 1 rental underwater studio located in East Los Angeles.

The results of the shoot were truly magical. Tinashe showcased her impressive underwater modeling skills, moving gracefully through the water while sporting a variety of striking looks. The blue-toned images captured by Kenny were stunning, creating a dreamy and ethereal vibe that perfectly complemented the otherworldly nature of the shoot.

One of the keys to the success of the underwater shoot was the photographer’s use of overhead video lights provided by FD Photo Studio for no extra cost to light the model in the best way possible. This technique is often used in underwater photography to counteract the distortion caused by the water, and Kenny expertly employed it to create images that were both dramatic and beautiful.

Another important factor in the success of the underwater shoot was the careful attention paid to the comfort and safety of the model. The water in the pool was filtered and heated to ensure that Tinashe was able to perform at her best without any discomfort.

For this shoot, the photographer and the talent also used the rain room rental photo studio Olympic 2 at the same FD location to capture striking black-and-white images. The rain feature in the studio added a layer of magic and drama to the shots, with the falling water creating a unique and ethereal atmosphere that perfectly complemented the talent’s performance.

The result of all these elements coming together was a truly stunning photo shoot that showcases both Tinashe’s impressive talent as a model and Tyler Patrick Kenny’s skill as a photographer. The images that were captured during the shoot are sure to be talked about and admired for years to come, and the cover of Numero Netherlands is sure to be a standout on newsstands everywhere.

It is our turn to share how we are fighting the spread of Covid-19

Daylight photo studio for rent in downtown los angeles
As the world continues to grapple with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it’s more important than ever for businesses to prioritize the health and safety of their employees and customers. At FD Photo Studio, we are taking all necessary precautions to help prevent the spread of the virus. This includes regularly disinfecting all high-touch surfaces, providing hand sanitizer for all staff and clients, and requiring the use of masks by everyone on the premises. We have also implemented social distancing measures, such as reducing the number of people allowed in the studio at one time and staggering appointment times to minimize contact. By taking these steps, we hope to do our part in stopping the spread of COVID-19 and keeping our community safe. Since all the websites you’ve even given your email to, now decided that the best way to bring joy to your day is to tell you how they are fighting this new virus, it is our turn to share how we are fighting the spread of Covid-19:
  • We have installed HEPA Air Purifiers with Carbon filters in each of our locations, that capture 99.97% airborne pollutants
  • We doubled up on our cleaning routines, especially for the high-touch areas and surfaces, like door handles, makeup tables, equipment, etc.
  • We constantly monitor and implement WHO, CDC, state and local health authorities guidelines
  • We highly encourage everybody from our team to take days off and recover even if they just feel a little unwell
Cleanliness of the studios and safety of our customers have always been one of our top priorities (as you’ve probably noticed) and we just wanted to reassure you that we’ll do our best to keep FD Studios clean and safe!
It is our turn to share how we are fighting the spread of Covid-19 -
Although it may seem like the most in-demand item right now is a roll of toilet paper, we are staying open for everybody who needs more than tissues to express their creativity. Beautiful daylight studios, unique interiors, professional equipment, friendly staff – these are just a few things from a long list of awesome features we are famous for and that we are innviting you to expereince . Practice social distancing while taking photos or shooting a video, as most shoots require more than 6 feet between camera and model anyway. Unless you have to use a wide-angle lens, in which case we’d suggest a “stretched camera arm” shooting technique. It can be challenging to master but we believe in you! Or just use a tripod and remote shutter trigger – possibilities are endless. By the way, have you tried product photography? It’s awesome! We’ve heard that you don’t even need to interact with your subjects on these shoots. 😉

In today’s quick tutorial with our favorite New Yorker – Photographer David Bergman and Adorama TV, we are going to talk about three photographic composition rules that David  often likes to break.

Mr. Bergman explains: “You probably learned a lot of these when you were first starting out, but all rules are meant to be broken. The first big one is the rule of thirds! I know you’ve heard about this one before… you take two horizontal lines and two vertical lines and imagine them evenly spaced apart throughout your frame, then what you do is you place your subjects at one of the cross-lines where  those lines meet.”

“Well, sometimes I’ll actually put my subjects in the dead center of the frame and I know that breaks the rule, but the key for me is to have a lot of symmetry around. By centering them that way it can sometimes really heighten the drama in the photograph.”

“The second rule is about having a sun at your back. The idea is to have your subjects evenly lit, which makes for simple exposures, even if you’re shooting on some kind of auto mode with your camera.  But sometimes, it’s nice to turn around and shoot with the sun shining right into your face.”

“Your subject is going to be a complete silhouette, but if you expose for the background it might make for a nice photograph. You can also put them right in front of the sun, so they block the brightest point, and have a nice halo around them. If you want you can add in a little bit of flash to light them up, and that’s the best way to make a picture of somebody in front of a  sunrise, or a sunset.”

“The last rule I like to break is about filling the frame. Usually you want to fill the frame with your subject, so you can eliminate any distracting backgrounds, and don’t waste any space in the image, but sometimes I like to use negative space in my image. By making the subject smaller on the frame, it can make them either look really small, or they could dominate the space. Play around with placement a bit you’ll find what works best for each photo.”
