Make Your Mark with David Bergman

David Bergman

Today we are going to explore the photographer’s ever-present dilemma of whether you should put a watermark on the image.

Photographer David Bergman explains: “watermark is a texture logo you put on a digital image to show who shot the photo.  Also, sometimes it’s used to show copyright protection.”

“So the big question is should you actually put a watermark on your photographs? Well, if you ask 10  photographers you’ll probably get10  different answers. Personally, I believe your name should be somewhere on your images so that a potential future client knows who took the picture and can find  you and hire you. The key is not to make it too big and obnoxious so it doesn’t take away from your photograph. Putting a giant copyright symbol over the middle  of your image will certainly keep  somebody from stealing it and using it in a way you didn’t want but also you won’t be able to see the picture.”

“Now that we’ve decided the watermark should be small, what should it look like? Using your business logo might be a good idea but only if you can really read your contact info. If it’s too artistic and crazy and it doesn’t make any sense they won’t be able to make it  out and find you.”

“What I do is use a program like Photoshop to create a single line of small text at the bottom right hand corner of my images. It has a copyright symbol, my name and my website. I use black text with a white outline so it shows up on a photograph anywhere whether it’s light or dark. I’ve also created a Photoshop action so I can create this whole thing in one simple click.”

“Of course someone could just crop that off the  image and use the picture anyway without  permission. But if they get caught, once they’ve cut that off of there it’s a really strong legal case because it’s a willful infringement at that point.”

Become Better Photographer with David Bergman: Background Zoom Blur

“When you’re taking a picture a big mistake a lot of new photographers make is that they’re  concentrating so much on the subject in their photo that they don’t look at the entire image” – Photographer David Bergman from AdoramaTV shares his quick tips for the control of the background blur.

“It’s incredibly important to control your background because it helps guide the viewer and tells them  where to look. In another tip I talked about using prime lenses to throw your background out of focus using prime lenses. it’s certainly one of the best ways to do it but what happens if you don’t have one of those fast lenses? For this shoot I’m using a full frame body gear but even most basic DSLR cameras  come with some type of a zoom lens.”

“If  you take a picture while standing close to your subject and your lens zoomed all the way out – your background is going to be pretty clear.”

“Sometimes that’s the  look you want, but if you really want to  make your subject pop off the image why don’t you try to zoom in your lens as far as it goes and then back up your body until your subject is framed how you want. If you can, have them fill the frame as much as possible.”

“You will really start to see a big difference in the background. Of course, the longer the zoom you have the more the background is going to go out of focus. This even works with point-and-shoot cameras as most of them have some kind of a good zoom built-in. You still want to shoot at the largest  aperture possible and if you can shoot with a full frame body with a large sensor that will help as well. One other thing you can do is pull your subject away from the background a little bit more because the further the distance away from the background the more it’ll  will go out of focus.”

“So next time you’re shooting something – zoom in as much as you can while backing your body up so that your subject still fills the frame. This will make your background go out of focus and your subject will just jump off the image right into your lap.”

Become Better Photographer: 3-2-1 Back Up with David Bergman  -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: 3-2-1 Back Up with David Bergman, Adorama TV

In today’s two minute tips with David Bergman and AdoramaTV you will learn about protecting your images by backing them up.

David explains: “It doesn’t matter if you’re a professional photographer a hobbyist or you just really love taking selfies – nobody wants to lose their digital images. There’s a lot of things that could cause you to lose your digital photos: things like theft or an old-fashioned data corruption… this doesn’t only apply to photos.”

Become Better Photographer: 3-2-1 Back Up with David Bergman  -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: 3-2-1 Back Up with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“You need to have a backup strategy in place and do it all the time so that you don’t have to worry about losing the data. I recommend the “3-2-1” backup strategy: three copies, two separate devices, and one off-site.”

Become Better Photographer: 3-2-1 Back Up with David Bergman  -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: 3-2-1 Back Up with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“Why do you need three copies? Well, if it’s something you really care about, you need multiple  copies. Having it on your computer and your camera card is just not enough. Having your images on two separate hard drives next to each other is not gonna work. You need to have the original file and at least two separate backups.”

Become Better Photographer: 3-2-1 Back Up with David Bergman  -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: 3-2-1 Back Up with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“So why do you need your images on two separate devices? If you have two copies of a picture on the same hard drive and that hard drive dies, you’re pretty much dead in the water. By having them on two separate physical devices with one dying you can just plug in the other and keep working like nothing  happens.”

Become Better Photographer: 3-2-1 Back Up with David Bergman  -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: 3-2-1 Back Up with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“With hard drives it’s not a matter of if they go bad it’s when they’ll go bad. Lastly, you really need to  have one version off-site. Sure it’s nice to have two hard drives in your office but what happens if there’s a theft or a fire or a flood? You’re gonna lose everything back in the day. I used to ship a hard drive to my mother’s place out of state and rotate it regularly so I always had that backup. These days we have great cloud options like Backblaze, PhotoShelter, dropbox or amazon, so you use one of those and set it to automatically backup so you’re always covered.”

Become Better Photographer: 3-2-1 Back Up with David Bergman  -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: 3-2-1 Back Up with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“No backup strategy is completely foolproof but if your images are important to you, you’ll use the  three-two-one method and minimize the risk of losing those important files including all of those selfies :).”

Become Better Photographer with David Bergman: Hand It To Me

In today’s tip we will learn a very nifty technique that you can apply in any situation no matter what equipment you’ll have “at hand”. Photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV share a quick way to test your camera’s parameters before the shoot.

Mr. Bergman shares: “There are a lot of  settings on our cameras these days so many settings things like flash settings, auto focus, exposure compensation, etc. I change those constantly depending on what I’m shooting. Sometimes I might pick up my camera for the next shoot and not realize I had changed something, and everything’s gonna be all wrong. For example, let’s take flash exposure  compensation. There are times when I want to under or over expose my subject. I’m gonna change that on the flash.”

Become Better Photographer with David Bergman: Hand It To Me  -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer with David Bergman: Hand It To Me, Adorama TV

“Then at the next shoot I want to go back to normal and I forget that I’ve changed it, and everything comes out underexposed! So what do I do to make sure that doesn’t happen? I take a picture of my hand at the  beginning of every single shoot!”

Become Better Photographer with David Bergman: Hand It To Me  -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer with David Bergman: Hand It To Me, Adorama TV

“Why would I use my hand? First of all, it’s always attached to my body. I don’t have to hunt around in my bag for a grey card or a color chart – it doesn’t matter, my hand is always attached to  my body.”

“Another reason to use my hand is that I can see what my exposure looks like on skin. Of course I have to mentally compensate for other skin tones but it’ll give me a really good starting point. Taking a picture of my hand lets me know that everything is working. I can see that my exposure is correct and no compensation is being applied. if I’m using continuous autofocus, I can move the focus point on or off my hand and make sure that’s working properly. if I’m using a flash with ambient light I can make sure the ratio of foreground and background is exactly how I want it. And of course I’ll immediately know if my flash batteries are dead and it’s not firing at all. So get in the habit of taking a picture of your hand before every shoot and you’ll have peace of mind and know that everything’s working!”
