At the location:

Stage Hill 4 is one of our largest and brightest stages. Advantageously positioned with the windows facing west and north, this stage gets plenty of sift indirect sunlight in the first half of the day and lots of direct sunbeams in the second half. Hill 4 is furnished with several comfy and photogenic couches of cream and and golden/brown leather color. Studio Hill 7 also known as a rain-room stage, offers unique experience for photographers to capture images in a wet environment”. With additionally embellished exposed brick and concrete walls, this stage is perfect for a rustic, industrial look. Become Better Photographer: Photography Headshot Session with Vanessa Joy

New to a headshot photography? This quick lesson from Vanessa Joy and her show “Breathe Your Passion” on AdoramaTV will be of great help to you! In a few simple steps you will be able to provide photographers that both you and your clients would love and share around.

Vanessa first shares hew pre-setup – “Before my clients get there, I typically set up some of the lighting that I know that I’m going to use for the shot. I don’t always set everything up, because I’d like my clients to see the effort that goes into putting a headshot session together, after all I want them to see the value of what it is that they paid for, other than just the final product.”

“The very first thing I have them do, is to take pictures with them, looking slightly to the left and slightly to the right. The reason I’m doing this is I’m trying to figure out what their better side is, so that I focus on photographing their better side. After the pictures are taken and tethered in to Lightroom, I have the client come over and take a look at the images with me. While photographically I might know what side is their better side, everyone has their own opinion about themselves, and I want to be sensitive about that and bring them in on the collaboration of figuring out which side of their face is better for photographing.”

Vanessa continues – “With this client, we both agreed that the picture on the right is his better side, so we move forward and started setting up the light, to compliment that side of his face. I ended up using the light here as a reflector, not actually turned on when I’m taking the shot. So I brought it in nice and close so that the white part of the 3×4 softbox could just act as a reflector for the main light that was going to be on the right side of his face. From there I directed my client to just stand in a nice relaxed manner and this helps them feel more comfortable in front of the camera, just not standing awkwardly, and then I gave him direction to put his hands in his pocket and to follow what I was telling him to do. With my chin by sticking it out, not up not down but out towards the camera so that he didn’t appear to have a double chin, which he definitely didn’t but as we know in photographs, if the head is not positioned correctly it can appear so.”

“From there we just move on to shooting and ideally I’m shooting fairly similarly positioned photos but I’m just having him move his chin up, down, to the right, to the left – only a little bit, very small movements. In headshots, photography can make a big difference. For this particular client he wanted all the pictures smiling naturally because he’s a dentist. So a nice bright smile is something that we were going for in the images.”

“After taking a few shots I do have the client come over and look at what we’ve got so far at the tethering station. I like to do this right away because I will ask them to point out shots that they like and that they don’t like and hopefully I find a pattern of facial expressions or body positions head positions that will tell me the things that they like, or don’t like about themselves on camera this will also give me a closer look at the image to make sure that the exposure and light patterns are correct and the way I want them to be, it’s one of the main reasons that I tether other than being able to collaborate with my clients on the spot.”

“After that we’re ready to take a few more images and with a better idea of what my client likes. I’m able to pose and direct them better, and at this point they’re more comfortable in front of the camera as well because they’ve seen images that I’m creating, and they understand the direction I’m giving and why I’m giving it. They essentially trust me a little bit more and loosen up in front of the camera. “

“The last little tip that I give my clients is to have them look slightly above the lens, like I’m telling him here this is to help their eyes look a little bit more open, appear a little bit more awake, it doesn’t make them look like they’re looking off camera, because it’s just a very slight eye movement upwards.”

Are you a proud wide lens owner? If your lens has less than 50mm of focal length, chances are you are one of them! Luckily in this episode with photographer David Bergman and his Two Minute Tips for AdoramaTV we will explore some techniques that can enhance the composition of your wide-angle images.

David shares – “Common wide-angle lenses are like 35, 28, 24 or all the way down to 14 or 11 millimeters. It’s fun to shoot wide. The extreme field of view allows us to show a lot of things happening in the frame all at once. Sometimes that’s the way you want it. The viewer can spend a lot of time looking at the image and can see more and more interesting things the longer they look around.”

“But other times you want an image to tell the viewer exactly where to look. One way to do that is by putting something very close in the foreground of your image. It can be anything interesting that you want to focus on. A leaf, a statue, or even a person. You’ll find that this gives you your image some depth. “

“If everything is the same distance from the lens, the photos tend to be really boring but if you get close enough to your subject the background will go out of focus and the foreground subject will be the only thing the viewer will care about. So the next time you shoot wide angle, shoot with something in the foreground and use the extreme composition to guide your viewers eyes exactly where you want them. “

The stage:

Stage Art 4, used for this shoot, is notorious for the high-key white industrial design. It has also been recently adorned with wooden floor section and a wall veneer as well as portable blinds, made of dark wood slats. The latest upgrade the stage received was a nice looking cozy egg like chair and a STAR illuminating across its shape! As any of our stages, Art 4 comes equipped with 3 strobe lights and modifiers as well as backdrop paper of black, white and grey color. Darius Morant And Brianna In Stage F

Playing with a very dramatic contrast, artistic duo of photographer Darius Morant and his muse of the shoot – model Brianna came up with series pretty interesting head shots.

A snippet of the shoot’s story:

“I’ve wanted to shoot at FD Photo Studio for a really long time. It meant a lot for me to be able to shoot there during my third trip to Los Angeles. My two prior trips were just vacations but this time I came to enjoy LA but also to work.I wanted to keep this particular shoot very simple. I didn’t need a grand idea or much in terms of production. Shooting with Brianna was really cool. I had been inspired to shoot with her probably over a year prior to the shoot actually happening. As creatives sometimes we can go through periods of feeling uninspired, or unimportant or both to name a few. I felt that way for a while. But I don’t feel that anymore. Now I know that there is no limit to what someone who believes in themselves can do, myself included. This photo shoot was the beginning of that belief.My girlfriend (@withloveyanai) was with me too and we were able to bring a vision that she had in mind to life as well. That’s how the darker images came about. Together we created a good range of moods and emotion in the images. See for yourself.”

StageF was used for this team’s creative session. The studio is the smallest space we currently offer for our clients. Yet it is one of the most brightest stages with the tremendous amount of natural light coming from North West. It has gained a nickname – “light box” by some of our regulars and it truly fulfills it at any time of the day from dawn until dusk. This studio also features two section laminate floor of white and dark color for your creative needs. Photographer Ian Jacob accompanied by two gorgeous models Lyric Alyss and Adelina Novak had visited us in New York Studio 3 for fun creative beauty /portrait photo shoot. Everything from models expressions to a color balance speaks perfection!
