Tina Guo at FD Studios!

Famous session cellist, electric cellist and composer Tina Guo visited our “Jungle Room” studio Hill 4. Working with multiple setups the creative team produced multiple futuristic images, including neon lights, black&white, street jungle – all in one stage!

Few words about the model:

Internationally acclaimed, GRAMMY Award-nominated and BRIT Female Artist of the Year-nominated musician Tina Guo has established an international career as a virtuoso acoustic/electric cellist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and entrepreneur. Known for her unique genre-crossing style, she is one of the most recorded Solo Cellists of all time and can be heard on hundreds of Blockbuster Film, Television, and Game Soundtracks. In 2018, Tina signed as an official brand partner with Bentley Motors, composing, performing, and producing the launch music for the luxury hybrid vehicle, Bentayga Hybrid. In 2019, Tina partnered with the Ritz-Carlton to create a soundtrack to the endless possibilities and unforgettable moments experienced at The Ritz-Carlton. Tina will visit four destinations — New Orleans, Dove Mountain, Toronto and Maui — and compose original scores inspired by these dynamic locations.

About this location:

Stage Hill 4 is one of our largest and brightest stages. Advantageously positioned with the windows facing west and north, this stage gets plenty of sift indirect sunlight in the first half of the day and lots of direct sunbeams in the second half. Hill 4 is furnished with several comfy and photogenic couches of cream and and golden/brown leather color. The stage:

Stage Art 1, a long-time FD Photo Studio favorite, was used for this shoot. With the high-key white industrial design that FD is notorious for, Stage Art 1 is a clean setting that can be manipulated to fit all kinds of projects. This space has its windows facing South and West and gets beautiful direct light during the PM hours, and great open-shaded light in the morning. Yoga Shoot in Studio D

Photographer Matteo Matty Matt teamed up with yogi Gabriella Bhatia for series of simple yet catchy shots. Various asanas were beautifully captured with natural light, occasional strobe help and duo’s creativity.

About this location:

Stage D is one of the most spacious and most affordable spaces we currently offer. Suitable for both large and small production teams, this stage is on always on a high demand. Lighting conditions are of supreme quality. If working with natural light, towards the sunset the studio gets plenty of great, warm light through large south-west facing frosted windows. Male Portrait Photography Workshop by Robert Silver

Photographer Robert Silver organized a very interesting workshop dedicated to male portraits. After a 30 min instruction presentation about the difference of capturing portraits of male subjects vs female the class spent the remaining time taking photos of the featured model.

About The Shoot:

For this workshop I teamed up with makeup artist Wendi Farias and actor/model James Parker.

The reason why I choose FD Photo Studio for the location of my workshop was because of there diverse of options of rentals studios. Each having their own unique creative environment. The one we used was Studio D, the book shelf room.

For the first half of the workshop we used a two light setup (a key light camera right & one fill light camera left) with a thunder gray Savage seamless backdrop. For the last outfit we decided to take advantage of the beautiful rustic bookshelf as a backdrop. In this case we decided to use a three light set up: key light camera right, rim/kicker light camera left rear of the subject and the last light used pointed at the bookshelf.

Become Better Photographer: Fashion with gels with Daniel Norton

Prolific New York based photographer Daniel Norton has a few tips on how to play with dominant red color of the photograph and still make it pop nicely on the picture. With help of color gel, Daniel uses simple 2 light system, one of dramatic red environment – another for subject emphasis with the clean light.

Daniel shares: “A lot of times when you want to get a really super saturated paper background color, what you do is – you throw a gel on your lights. That is light in the background, so if I want a red background, and I want it exposed properly, but I also want high saturation, I’ll put a red gel on my light… that’s fun but I wanted to kind of mix it up with a little bit of style here today.

“I have actually in my Profoto 3 foot octa a red gel. “

“I’m going to take my controller, and I’m going to give it some juice. “

“Next I’m gonna throw a modeling light, and I’m gonna basically just light up her face… more or less… this is a five degree grid, so it’s pretty tight and it’s hard light cause it’s small… so you can see it’s throwing shadows, the light of her face…”

“So now I’m gonna turn on both lights. Now we can see we’re getting clean light on her face… where it falls in the shadow we’re getting red, but more importantly more interesting if you look at like her arms and such, they’ve got this cool red cast on her. “

” I’m shooting around f/8 guys, because I’m in a day light studio and I’m eliminating the lighting here… so check so we’ve have plenty of sharpness going down the dress… again if you were shooting a catalogue for this particular gown.. this is not probably the shot you want to do, but if you’re shooting more of an editorial shot… something with fun… you could do this. If you had let’s say different color dresses, you could you now use different gels, and different backgrounds for each one, because you’re gonna get a clean light on the face from this.”

“I backed it up as smidge, so I am just going to turn it up like 1/10th… I going to need a little more coverage to give her a little more space.”

Become Better Photographer: Lens Upgrade with David Bergman

Saved some money and ready for camera upgrade? It might be a good idea to start with the lens first. Good quality lens will outperform your standard kit lens tenfold, whereas DSLR camera bodies are usually on a very similar quality level and will not make much difference for the photograph itself. Today’s article with photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV is about how to make a right lens purchase decision.

David shares: “My friends always ask me what camera they should buy, but that’s really not the best question to ask. Camera bodies are like little computers and they need to be upgraded eventually but as long as it’s still working, a new camera by itself won’t make you a better photographer. The thing you really want to upgrade first is your lens. So besides focal length, the other spec on a lens is the aperture. The lower that number, like f/4 or f/2.8, the more light that can come through the lens. This allows you to do a couple of things, first of all you can shoot in lower light situations. The other thing is you can throw your background way more out-of-focus, giving you that smooth professional look. “

“So that first DSLR you bought, it probably came with a kit lens. Most of those have what’s called a “variable aperture zoom” which means, the more you zoom in, the less light it lets in. The problem is, you can’t shoot in low light situations and the background is not going to go out of focus like you really want it to. One thing to do is, buy a zoom lens with a fixed aperture. Most companies make a 24-70mm that comes in both an f/4 and a f/2.8 version. Pros generally like the f/2.8 version because it lets in just a little bit more light. But keep in mind it’s bigger heavier and more expensive than the f/4.”

” You also should consider upgrading to a prime lens which doesn’t zoom at all… The main thing to remember is you can get a much wider aperture, sometimes as wide as f/1.2. This will give your background that smooth creamy look that you are after. At the end of the day, a quality lens is a good investment. Unlike a car that loses its value as soon as you drive it off the lot, a good high quality lens could last you a lifetime. If you can only afford to do one or the other, invest as much as you can in a lens and hold onto that body as long as you can until the muffler falls off.”
