E-comm shoot for Hamabla

Nice and easy e-comm shoot took place in Hill 1 studio, where the team from beach lifestyle brand Hamabla shot its new apparel collection. The team took classic approach of shooting the model against plain white backdrop.

Studio Hill 1 has a few distinct features you will not find in any other stages. Facing the west side this stage gets lots of natural light in the afternoon and has amazing lighting conditions during the golden hour. Become Better Photographer: 6 Ways to Making Your Bride a Knockout with Vanessa Joy

From our beloved bridal and wedding photographer expert Vanessa Joy from AdoramaTV, today we will learn a couple of trick to make your bride look absolutely stunning. Full video posted below.

Vanessa shares: “Number one thing is expression. It’s the hardest thing to work with, with brides because they’re usually not supermodels. Here’s one of my favorite tricks to getting a non smiling expression, out of a bride. Make them breathe in through the mouth right when you’re about to take that serious picture of them, have them just take a deep breath in through the mouth, and at the top of that breath, that’s when you take the picture. So breathe in creates a tension in the shoulders, and usually has them puff their chest out.”

“Make them look like a knockout, by giving them an s-curve. Flat-footed, you know what, some people look good like this, but not everyone, because, very stiff, take a knee, turn it in.”

“Another way to make sure your bride looks like a knockout – never have straight arms. Have them bend arms at obscene angle.”

“ooh.. chin.. nobody likes double chins. Have your model stretch her chin towards the camera.”

“Don’t forget about the details, you might have the best picture of the bride ever, but all she’s going to see, is that strand of hair all right. Make sure her hair looks good. Make sure everything’s fluffed, make sure her dress looks good, that there’s no wrinkles happening here, a lot of dresses you get the wrinkles at the stomach. Smooth it out… all those little details are going to make a difference.”

“You make a bride easily look like a knockout by using a nice long lens. I do full-length pictures of my brides with a 135mm lens. Love that compression, makes beautiful, beautiful portraits, make your bride look like a knockout!”

Become Better Photographer: Angle of Reflection with David Bergman

Reflectors are awesome, but be careful how you position them, or you might end up looking just like a scary beast instead of a sleepy beauty. Although a fair amount of experimentation is welcome to explore creative use of reflectors, here are few standard ways it can be implemented in your shoots.

Mr. Bergman shares: “Reflectors are inexpensive, and come in many shapes and sizes, but how do you point them to get the best possible results. Well it really depends on whether you want it to provide your main key light, or just some fill. For key light you should use the silver or gold side to really reflect a lot of light back onto your subject. It’s basically the same as using a studio light, or speed light, and since that’s the case you want to aim it the same way you would do with one of those lights. You can create traditional Rembrandt lighting, which has your light approximately 45 degrees up and 45 degrees over. “

“So the shadow of Maria’s nose goes diagonally down the bottom of her cheek. Using the reflector, you want to stand off to the side, and hold it up high over your head, so the light comes from that same angle.”

“There are of course other angles you can use to light your subject. For extreme drama, you could put the reflector a couple of feet in front of your subject, and up over her head to aim the light down onto the face.”

” This is a popular look with a beauty dish that you can sort of replicate with a reflector. “

“As with any portrait lighting, rules are meant to be broken, but you probably don’t want to put a very reflective surface under your subjects face as your key light. It’s a lot like holding a flashlight under your chin in a dark room, and is often called monster lighting for obvious reasons. “

“That’s usually not the look we want for a beauty portrait. Hey, but is it ever okay to have a reflector under your subject. Absolutely, but only if you’re using the reflector to fill in shadows, and not overpower your key light. I would go with the soft white part to just take away some of the shadows on Maria’s eyes, and under her nose. Just remember when using the more harsh colors like silver or gold and your reflector the same way, you would aim your flash, unless you want your subject to look like she’s starring in a horror movie.”

About the shoot:

“Young actor/model Matthew Mazzarisi came in for his first modeling pictures and some actor headshots. I was inspired by the natural light streaming in through the old casement windows and the shadows it created on the floor. These are all shot using the available light in the studio with some deft reflector work by my assistant Joao Rosa Octavio.”

NY Studio 3 also known as “exposed brick” studio is one of our brightest stages at New York campus. With additionally embellished exposed brick and concrete walls, this stage is perfect for a rustic, industrial look. Tim Edwards’s Return to Hill 2

Photographer Tim Edwards did this photo shoot in Hill 2 which he had used before. As Tim shared with us – “The original model accidentally drove to the other FD studio but thankfully I had my friend with me, who is also an incredible model, and we did a set while we waited.”

Stage Hill 4 is one of our largest and brightest stages. Advantageously positioned with the windows facing west and north, this stage gets plenty of sift indirect sunlight in the first half of the day and lots of direct sunbeams in the second half. Hill 4 is furnished with several comfy and photogenic couches of cream and and golden/brown leather color. Comic Con inspired shoot by Aaron Ram Powell

Nice use of gels in addition to rugged, post-war look of stage Hill 6 is all you need to highlight a cool costume, such as the one that this creative duo had for a set. Great job!
