Strapped In: A Quick Tutorial with David Bergman

Strapped In: A Quick Tutorial with David Bergman -Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

Today’s quick tutorial with the Photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV is about something that photographers use every time – a camera strap!

Mr. Bergman shares his insights: “Unfortunately many of us don’t pay enough attention to this vital  piece of equipment. Of course I’m talking about the camera strap. Why do I use a camera strap? Well, the main reason is that I don’t want to drop this expensive piece of equipment by accident!”

“Personally I never wear the camera around my neck unless I’m using a really small lightweight body. If I have it on there for any extended period of time – I’m really gonna be hurting badly. Now that the camera is on my shoulder, what do I look for in a camera strap? Well, you know those ones that come with the camera that you just bought – it’s got the company name all over them. I don’t use those!”

“First of all they’re missing some important features that I like, but more importantly I don’t want to advertise the model number of the expensive camera I’m carrying around all day long. My favorite strap is the one-inch donkey gripper strap.”

“It has these rubber tracks made of the material that helps keep it from slipping off my shoulder. It also  has these cool metal swivels on each end to keep the strap from getting twisted around as I move around all day long. That’s my favorite strap but there are a lot of other kinds out there. A popular  type is the sling strap from BlackRapid. It attaches to the tripod mount on the bottom of your camera or lens and hangs down at the side of your body. They also make a dual-camera version that’s excellent at reducing pressure on your body, especially if you’re going to be wearing it all day at a wedding or a concert festival.”

“There are many other ways to hold onto your camera including really fashionable straps made of  leather, wrist straps or holster type devices that attach to your belt. I personally don’t use any of those and stick with my simple donkey gripper.”

Going Remote with David Bergman

Going Remote with David Bergman -Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

Today’s quick tutorial from the renown Photographer David Bergman and his show on AdoramaTV would be dedicated to the photo-shots executed remotely.

David explains his method of shooting with the remote control: “What’s a remote camera? Well, it’s just a regular camera that you place somewhere else and trigger it remotely without holding it in your hands. These are often used at sporting events but I’ve also used them at concerts and other live  events.”

Going Remote with David Bergman -Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“To make a remote camera you obviously need an extra camera and a lens, but there are a few other pieces to make it work. The first one is two radio devices – a transmitter and a receiver. PocketWizard has been the industry standard for years but there are some other companies making them now as well.”

Going Remote with David Bergman -Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“You also need to buy the proper cord for it, since unfortunately each brand uses a  different kind of cords. You can fire the remote by putting the transmitter on the hot shoe of your camera and then every time you take a picture – both cameras will fire at the same time. You can also keep the transmitter off your camera and fire it independently whenever you want by pushing the button.”

Going Remote with David Bergman -Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“I like to wear it around my neck or on my belt – it provides an easy access. Instead of using separate radio devices some cameras have built-in Wi-Fi or you can use something like the camera tether  which plugs directly into the USB port of your camera.”

Going Remote with David Bergman -Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“The advantage of using a device like this is you can use software on your phone or tablet to see through your camera in real time. Change settings if you have to and download images directly to your device. The last thing  you need is a way to mount your camera in a remote location. I like to use the  bogan magic arm which allows me to clamp it to anything secure and put the camera at any angle.”

Carry On Conundrum with David Bergman

In today’s quick photography tip with the New York based camera pro David Bergman and his tutorial show on AdoramaTV we are going to explore the safest way to travel/fly with your expensive gear.

David shares: “We all know what a hassle it can be to get traveling with a lot of expensive photo gear. I’ve got a tip that might help minimize problems with getting onto an airplane. The goal is to bring as much of your equipment with you onto the plane and check everything else – that’s less fragile things like your clothes and battery chargers, in  your checked bag underneath the plane.”

Carry On Conundrum with David Bergman -Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“But make sure your cameras and lenses are with you at all times. Each airline has its own rules and regulations for carry-on bags, so the simplest thing to do is just follow those rules get a bag that fits in the overhead and do everything you can to board as early as possible and get that coveted overhead  space.”

Carry On Conundrum with David Bergman -Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“If your bag is too big or heavy and they won’t let you bring it on the plane, I know some photographers who will actually pull their stuff out of the bag and wear their gear over their neck and  shoulders. I can’t imagine this really comfortable that way but they’ll let you on the plane like that.”

Carry On Conundrum with David Bergman -Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“Unfortunately sometimes you’re on a small plane and they force everybody to get check the bag. So this is how I handle that: When I get to the end of the jetway, there’s usually a baggage handler there who’s taking the bags down to the plant. I say these key words to him or her – “there’s a really large piece of glass inside this bag. Don’t freak out, it’s padded. But if you can just be extra careful with it I’d really appreciate it!”  Let me tell you, as soon as I say that they take extra special care of the bag.  Usually they put it right on top of everything else so yours is the first bag out just make friends with that person and they’ll help you out! I’m not lying at all because the lenses actually do have a bunch of big pieces of glass in them. Of course it would stink if anything actually happened to your gear.  Hopefully you’ve got business insurance and you’re keeping your images with you in your pocket at all times. This will help you travel with peace of mind, even if you’ve got a lot of extra weight on your neck and shoulders when you get on the plane.”

Rodney Valiant by Soaring Phoenix Photography -Wrong Ron, stage D, shot at FD Photo Studio, Rental Studio, Photo Studio, Los Angeles, FD photo studio, DTLA, bookshelf, blog, !D

About the Shoot:

This shoot was a concept shoot that Rodney and I came up with jointly as I was going to be visiting Los Angeles. The concept was first a business man who’s had a long day and is beginning to unwind.  The next scene, you see a man who is ready for a fight, MMA style.  This scene signifies the internal battle with oneself on an internal and external level. We next see this man finding whole and complete self confidence. I can honestly say that both of us are happy with the result and can’t wait to shoot at FD again the next time I’m in Los Angeles.
