About the photographer and the shoot:

I have primarily been shooting weddings & sweet 16s for over 4 years. During the winter season, I set a goal to organize a few shoots to expand my portfolio and keep the creative juices flowing. My friends recommended this space in LIC, as I was new to renting studio space for TFP collaborations. I was blown away at FD’s set up, and how every studio had a unique look.

A friend introduced me to four lovely models who also work as Playboy bunnies, so I created a model release form and circulated to them for review. For this shoot, I did not have any specific outfits or looks in mind, and the models brought amazing looks that complimented the rustic and elegant decor of the studio space. I really appreciate their effort and the positive energy that they brought to the space. I would shoot them again anytime! I hope you enjoy the photos.

Struggling with setting your camera exposure? This tutorial might be exactly what you need! Pro photographer David Bergman from AdoramaTV will talk about adjusting settings to get the right exposure for your images.

Mr. Bergman states: “I’m a big proponent of shooting in manual mode, and my recommendation has always been to just start somewhere with your settings, and adjust until it looks how you want. There are three settings you can change, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, and if you adjust two or three at once, it can get confusing, because you don’t know how each one is affecting your image. But which one of those do you change first?”

“There are usually one or two settings that are more important to the image you’re trying to make. So you want to lock those in first, and then adjust the other settings that have less of an impact. So for example, if we’re outdoors and want to make a picture with a shallow depth of field, then the most important setting is the aperture. I want to shoot wide open, so I’ll set this lens at f/4 and won’t change it.”

“Next, I want my ISO to be relatively low to give me the least amount of noise, I have a bit more leeway with this setting, because I really won’t see much of a difference if I’m shooting at 200, 400 or even it’s 640. I’ll go with 400 in this case, and lock it in.”

“Now all I have to worry about is my shutter speed, and that’s the one I’m going to move around. At this point unless I get into really slow shutter speeds, all it will affect is my exposure. Shooting at 250th of a second or 2000th of a second, will freeze my subject completely either way, so I can safely adjust that setting, until I get the exact right exposure.”

“Of course every situation is different, to make a panning shot, I need a slow shutter speed. So I would set that first, and then pick a low ISO for quality, that leaves me only with the aperture, which is less important to the image, because in a panning shot it won’t look too much different whether I’m at 5.6, or f/11.”

“At the end of the day, you want to keep things simple for yourself by locking in two of the three settings, and then adjust only the third until everything looks just how you want it.”

In this 100th episode of our beloved New Yorker David Bergman and his photography series on AdoramaTV called “2-minute Tips” the host decided to do something different.

David shares; “It’s not about a camera setting. a lighting technique, or even gear advice! Instead it’s a reminder on how to make better portraits, by being a human being! First I know we love our toys, and it’s easy to get caught up in all the gear, but it’s important to remember that there’s actually another person on the other side of the lens, and when you’re photographing them they are probably way more nervous than you are!”

“It doesn’t matter if someone’s hired you to take their picture, or if you’re traveling and want to photograph someone on the street. When meeting your subjects for the first time, don’t come in guns blazing with lights and cameras. It’s intimidating, and might make them self-conscious.”

“Instead leave the gear, put away in the beginning. Introduce yourself, smile and look them in the eye. If you’re coming to their house or office, hopefully they’ll invite you in, and you can sit down and have a real conversation. That’ll also give you a chance to look around and figure out where you want to do the photo shoot, then after a few minutes when you’ve had a chance to really connect with them, tell them that you’d like to get your photo gear and get set up.”

“By that time they’ve probably relaxed and should be much more comfortable and ready to have their picture taken! Remember.. at the end of the day photography is half art, and half science! Don’t get so caught up in the equipment and lighting, and forget that we’re all human beings first! Connect with your subject and you’ll see the positive results in your photos!”
