Today’s tip shared by AdoramaTV’s favorite – photographer David Bergman is on how to make aperture priority mode more useful – “You probably know that I’m a big proponent  of shooting in full manual exposure mode.  It gives you total control over your  images and doesn’t leave anything to  chance in the camera. However there are  times when you might want the cameras  help just a little bit… for example, in a  fast-moving situation where you’re going  in and out of extremely different  lighting you could ask the camera to  make some quick exposure decisions for  you.  In that case aperture priority is  usually the way to go.  It’s represent as an A or AV on your camera.”

Become Better Photographer: Auto ISO with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“Controlling your aperture allows you to  decide how wide or narrow you want your  depth of field to be. But anytime you give your camera control of your exposure there are consequences.  Let’s say you’re shooting outdoors you have  your ISO low to keep image quality high.  The camera will pick a pretty fast shutter speed, because there’s plenty of  light, but once you step inside unless you remember to manually adjust your ISO,  your shutter speed could be too slow and you’ll have blurry photos. Nobody wants that! The answer for this problem is a  feature called auto ISO.”

Become Better Photographer: Auto ISO with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Auto ISO with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“Most modern  cameras have it. The beauty of auto ISO  is that you can set the maximum ISO and  minimum shutter speed the camera is allowed to use, so maybe you set your  max ISO at 8000 or whatever you think the highest usable amount is for you  particular camera, and your minimum  shutter speed at let’s say 250th of a  second.”

Become Better Photographer: Auto ISO with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TVBecome Better Photographer: Auto ISO with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Adorama TV

“Now when you go inside on  aperture priority the camera will still  lower your shutter speed for the darker situation first, but only until it gets to that set 250th of a second.  If it still needs more light it’ll start to  raise your ISO at that point, it’s the  best of both worlds.”

“At the end of the  day I still recommend shooting on manual. But if you don’t want to think and have  to move fast you can use aperture priority to let your camera help you out  a little bit. But remember to use auto  ISO so your camera doesn’t get totally out of control.”

Setting the proper exposure for backlit subjects can be tricky. What does it mean when your subject is backlit? Photographer David Bergman shares his techniques on producing great shots in this setup – “Generally it’s when you  have more light hitting your subject  from the back than from the front. Sometimes you’re forced into a backlighting situation because you can’t  move your subject or yourself, and that’s  just where the light is coming from.”

Become Better Photographer: Backlight Bliss with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Backlight Bliss with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“Other times you might choose to light  your subject that way because it just looks cool, and you can really make your images pop. Getting proper exposure on a backlit subject can be a bit tricky.  You generally have two options, your first is  to meter for the background and let your  subject become a silhouette.”

Become Better Photographer: Backlight Bliss with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Backlight Bliss with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“This works  well if you have a nice sky in the back  or if your subject is something  recognizable, even in shadow. The other option is to expose properly for the front of your subject. In this case I’ll  take a spot meter reading on model’s  face to get the proper settings. A bright  background like the sky will usually be  blown out, and you won’t see much  separation where her head ends and the  background starts. That might be the look  you want, however if I turn around and  put her against a dark background it’ll  accentuate the backlight, giving the  image a unique look.”

“Raindrops show  up really well when backlit against the  dark background.  I’ll slow my shutter speed down just a  bit, to get some motion as the drops are  falling. Now you see we can create a  really fun portrait with just a little  help from a standard garden hose.  So remember whether you find yourself in  a backlit situation, or create one  yourself, use the light to create unique  images that stand out from the background.”

Like to keep your shot in the autofocus? In this quick tutorial with our favorite New Yorker David Bergman we learn the different autofocus modes and why you pick one over the other.

David explains: “Way back in the days before auto focus cameras,  we all had to learn how to use manual focus.  It didn’t matter if the subject was stationery  or moving fast, the key to making a good  image was using you hand and eye coordination and turning the lens and keep the subject in focus every single time you took a picture. Now we have these incredible computers systems built-in to our camera that  can do the work of focusing for us.  With great power comes great responsibility,  we are given two primary ways to set  auto focus and there are reasons to use both.  It depends on your camera model but  in general the first is called AI Servo or continuous, while the other is one shot or single Servo.  Continuous is for a subject in motion.  You use back button focus like I do,  or by pressing the shutter half way  auto-focus is on it will constantly  be hunting, searching and adjusting focus,  to keep your subjects sharp.”

“There are some other settings you can  adjust, but in general the camera will  focus on whatever is in the middle of  your frame.  You can take a picture anytime you want  even if your subject isn’t in focus at that  millisecond, however theses camera’s  are so good, that it almost doesn’t matter  how fast your subject is moving, your camera will keep the subject in focus.”

“One shot mode on the other hand is for  stationery subjects.  Once the camera find focus, it locks on tight and doesn’t let go, no matter  where you point the lens.  Of course you can deactivate and  reactivate the autofocus to force  the camera to find focus again,  but you couldn’t possibly do it that  fast now for a moving subject.  Stick to continuous for that. ”

Become Better Photographer: Auto Focus Modes with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Auto Focus Modes with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“Which one do I use?  Well I’m on continuous focus mode almost  all of the time. I can always lock focus  lifting my finger off the back button.  Or if you prefer using the shutter button  you can use the AF lock button.  Some cameras have a hybrid mode,  that tries to switch back and forth  between one shot and continuous,  but I find it’s too much of a  compromise since the camera might  not switch fast enough between modes when your subject moves for example.”

In this quick tutorial we are going to explore a simple way to shoot close-up photos, by using an extension tube. New York Photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV give a few tips to save hundreds of dollars on the gear.

Mr. Bergman shares: “Macro lenses are cool, they  allow you to get in really close to your  subject, and can open up a whole new  photographic world for you. If you can  buy a dedicated macro lens that’s great,  but they’re pretty expensive, so if  you’re not someone who does much  close-up photography, then a macro lens  might be too much for you.”

Become Better Photographer: Extension Tubes with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Extension Tubes with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“This is where  extension tubes can come in really handy.  All lenses have a minimum focusing  distance. An extension is just a hollow  tube with no pieces of glass, that lets  you pull your lens further away from the  camera body. You can buy extension tubes  in many different lengths. The further  away the lens, the closer you can focus  on your subject, which means you get more  magnification.”

Become Better Photographer: Extension Tubes with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Extension Tubes with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“There are generally two types of extension tubes. The cheapest kind are really just a simple tube with no mechanical connections at all. These are fun to play around with, but unless  you’re using an old lens with a manual aperture ring, you’re stuck shooting at a wide open aperture. This is because the camera can’t talk to the lens, and make  it close down. I’ve even heard of  do-it-yourselfers, who have made their  own extension tubes out of a toilet  paper roll, and it actually works!”

Become Better Photographer: Extension Tubes with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Extension Tubes with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“However if you’d like to have full  control over your settings, then get  something that’s made for your camera –  like this Canon EF25, which has  electrical contacts built into it. It’s a  bit more expensive, but allows you to  change your aperture, and when shooting  that close you generally want to be at a  small aperture. Depth of field is  severely limited, and even at f/22, you’ll  find that when you’re focused so close,  you’ll still have a really shallow focus  area.”

Become Better Photographer: Extension Tubes with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Extension Tubes with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“So why would you prefer a dedicated  macro lens if extension tubes are  lighter and less expensive. The main  reason is, that you do lose some image  quality since you’re really using your  lens in a way that it wasn’t designed.  But it’s a great way to get started with  close-up photography, it can open up a  creative world like you’ve never seen before.
