About the shoot:

I have always wanted to try a spotlight shot. I didn’t know how to create it, except watching a few youtube videos, which really didn’t help. When I got to FD Astoria, I told the front desk my idea and the guy gave me a snoot. I fixed it on a strobe and added two more strobes with gels. This is what I was able to create! I am truly amazed at the results!

Like to be right on time? You are in luck! In this quick tutorial with the Photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV we will explore an easy way to sync the time stamp on your images when shooting with multiple cameras!

David explains: “There are a lot of situations where you may have photos shot at the same time  from two or more cameras.  You might want to have bodies with  different lenses ready to go or you could be working with a second shooter at a wedding or other  big events. When you’re ready to go through all of those images it’s really  helpful to look at them in chronological order.  Ideally you’ve set the proper time on every single camera ahead of time!  You can do this in the camera menus or  by connecting it to a computer and using  the manufacturers software….”

“But look  let’s be honest you probably haven’t done that!  I set mine fairly often but it’s still a pain to do and I find that it drifts a little bit over time. If you don’t do it then after a  shoot you might find yourself with  thousands of images completely out of order.”

“Simply use each camera to take a picture of a clock. If your phone doesn’t show the seconds on it then just go to a website that shows the time and take a  picture of the screen.  You can do this before the shoot  during the shoot or even afterwards.  It really doesn’t matter  you just need an image of the clock at  some point from each camera body.”

“After the shoot, you want to change the time stamp of all your images based on that clock image that you shot.  Personally I use photo mechanic, but this  function exists in Lightroom and probably a lot of other programs.”

“Also in photo mechanic  you just sort all of your images by serial numbers, so that each camera is separated. Select all of the images from one of those, and go to adjust->capture dates, and times. Look at the image of the time you shot with that body, and then use the function to change the existing timestamp, so it matches the time you  photographed it.”

“Hit ‘adjust photos’, and  all your images will be changed to the  exact time that they were taken.  Redo that process with all your cameras,  and presto! Your images will have the correct time. After that you can just sort  chronologically and everything will be  completely in order.  The whole process really takes less time than it took me to give you this tip!”

Today’s tip is about using flash exposure  compensation to make your photos look  more natural. Our favorite New Yorker – photographer David Bergman explains his nifty technique of working with on-camera flash: “I’ve talked a lot over the years about bringing your Flash off of the camera because direct flash is  usually not very flattering to your  subject, but there are times when you have to shoot on camera, because you’re moving too quickly or just don’t have the gear to take the flash off of your camera body.”

Become Better Photographer: Flash Exposure Compensation with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Flash Exposure Compensation with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“I don’t recommend auto mode very often, and always shoot my camera on manual, however the flash itself does a really  good job reading the light it’s putting  out, and TTL mode can be very helpful in a fast-moving situation. If you’ve shot this way before you might have found that the flash looks unnatural – it’s usually too bright on your subject.”

Become Better Photographer: Flash Exposure Compensation with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Flash Exposure Compensation with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“So how do you use TTL without overpowering the photo? Three words – flash exposure compensation! Almost all flashes have the  ability to dial the automatic exposure  up or down. It’s usually measured in thirds of a stop to give you a lot of  control. If I dial down two stops into the negative for example, I’m telling the  flash to do its automatic calculation, and then whatever amount of light it comes up with – just  give me two stops less than that.”

“Of course, this works in both ways – you can  tell it to overpower the scene by adding  up to three stops, but I can’t say I’ve ever really done that. Ideally I don’t  want it even look like I’m using flash  at all. It’s more like a subtle fill  whether I’m indoors, or out. You’ll have to test your own equipment in each  situation to find the right balance of  Flash to ambient but once you get it set,  it’s the best of both worlds! You can use the auto TTL mode on the flash, but you can also bring the output down so your  photos look more natural.”

This quick tutorial dedicated to the psychological component of a successful photoshoot. Photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV in their 100th episode explained the importance of establishing a comfortable environment for the person in front of the lens.

David shares his approach to establish a great shooting environment on-set: “First I know we love our toys, and it’s easy to get caught up in all the gear,  but it’s important to remember that  there’s actually another person on the other side of the lens, and when you’re photographing them they are probably way more nervous than you are!”

“It doesn’t  matter if someone’s hired you to take  their picture, or if you’re traveling and want to photograph someone on the street. When meeting your subjects for the first  time, don’t come in guns blazing with lights and cameras. It’s intimidating, and  might make them self-conscious. Instead  leave the gear, put away in the beginning.  Introduce yourself, smile and look them  in the eye.”

Become Better Photographer: Communication with the model, with David Bergman -with David Bergman, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Communication with the model, Adorama TV

“If you’re coming to their  house or office, hopefully they’ll invite you in, and you can sit down and have a  real conversation.  That’ll also give you a chance to look  around and figure out where you want to  do the photo shoot, then after a few minutes when you’ve had a chance to really connect with them, tell them that  you’d like to get your photo gear and  get set up. By that time they’ve probably  relaxed and should be much more comfortable and ready to have their  picture taken!  Remember.. at the end of the day  photography is half art, and half science!  Don’t get so caught up in the equipment  and lighting, and forget that we’re all  human beings first.”
