About the photographer and the shoot:

I am Melina, a natural light, fine art photographer based in New York City, specializing in child, family, maternity and dancer/artist portraiture. I am endlessly fascinated by movement, and emotion, so I cherish every opportunity to work with dancers, performers, and artists.

This photoshoot was with dancer Stephanie Jingle. The huge windows and earthy, rich tones of the Wood Platform Studio created the perfect setting to capture Stephanie’s incredible strength, grace, passion, and artistry.

NY Studio 2 known as “Wood Platform” studio is one of the busiest stages we currently offer. Equipped with everything you need for a perfect intimate, romantic or empowering style of photoshoot, this stage always leaves our clients excited and hungry for more time. Featuring a dark wood floor platform across the stage and a sexy purple boutique chair creates welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. A wall section with the brick veneer adds a flavor to this urban loft style. Among these unique features, the stage comes with great equipment – three strobe lights, three backdrops of white, grey and black color, sound system, makeup station and changing station. A few words about the photographer and the shoot:

I’m just a hobby photographer who shoots male fashion and editorial on the weekends. The shoot we did at the studio was to update my friend’s portfolio for his modeling pages.

About the stage:

Stage Hill 4 is one of our largest and brightest stages. Advantageously positioned with the windows facing west and north, this stage gets plenty of sift indirect sunlight in the first half of the day and lots of direct sunbeams in the second half. Hill 4 is furnished with several comfy and photogenic couches of cream and and golden/brown leather color. Hello, my name is Princeofthegram. Everyone calls me Prince. I am the most popular photographer within the Hip-Hop community in the city of Los Angeles, CA. Hill 6 Studio is a sleek and elegant daylight studio with Moroccan shower, free-standing bathtub, moving prop wall and lots of day light. Adding up to our beautiful “gloss floor” studio 6 at Hill location is newly installed Moroccan clay textured shower corner with a deck and a standing shoot-through glass.

Studio Hill 5 is one of the best option we have for creative crews on the budget. This Romantic White Stage has its windows facing South, which provides plenty of natural light for photographers. Among studio’s unique props are Gold Bellman Cart, White Decor Frames Wall, “Victoria Secret” like pink striped wall section and a pink upright piano. Become Better Photographer: Inverse Square Law with David Bergman

The Inverse Square Law can sound really confusing but has practical implications for all kinds of photography. David Bergman from AdoramaTV explains its best practices in hands-on examples further below.

“The inverse square law tells you how quickly light falls off the further away it is from whatever you’re shooting. You might think that as you double the distance between your subject and the light source that you would have half the light hitting them, but the truth is you actually get a quarter of the light. And if you double the distance again you get 1/16th of the light. So it really has to do with the way that the photons of light spread out as they travel. They don’t all hit your subject equally.”

“You can geek out over the science all you want but I’d rather talk about it in practical terms. Here’s the only thing you really need to know – the light falls off a lot faster if the light source is closer to your subject. This is really useful to know so you can control the ratio of light on your subject and the background. In the following example I will be shooting with my friend Tango. He’s standing in front of a white background. I’m only using one light and it’s pretty far away from him.”

“You can see that the background is relatively bright but now let’s move that light in. So it’s a lot closer to Tango, of course it’s a lot brighter on him now. So we have to change our camera settings so that he’s properly exposed.”

“But now look at the background, it’s a lot darker. So without moving my subject at all I can create a completely different look from my photo. This is also important to know when shooting a group shot of people like a band, for example. If everyone’s standing different distances from the light but you want them to be lit pretty evenly then you have to get your light further away from the entire group. Don’t stress out about the science behind the inverse square law, unless you’re into that kind of thing. Photography is really about using and controlling light. So use those scientific principles to make your pictures look exactly like you want them to.”
