Boxing Shoot at the “Metal Garage” Olympic 5 Studio

About the Shoot:

“I’m @Photo__Mark, a Los Angeles based photographer. This shoot was inspired but the Olympic 5 set itself. I was booked for a photoshoot and noticed the boxing ring. Bells immediately rang off in my head. I have to credit my two muses @bralynnehughes & @alohoaayana showed up under 12 hour notice Understood the assignment. This is probably one of the most underrated locations.”

Become Better Photographer: Background Shutter Drag with David Bergman

Today’s tip is about balancing foreground and background while shooting with a flash indoor. Photographer David Bergman from AdoramaTV will share his technique to overcome the problem of a dark background overpowered by the flash.

Mr. Bergman explains: “The first step is to take full control by going into manual mode on your camera. That way you dictate exactly what you want, and tell the camera how you want the picture to look.”

“You probably know there are three main settings that affect the exposure of your final image aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Let’s say we’re doing a group shot indoors, we want everybody to be in focus, so we’ll probably have our aperture in the middle somewhere around f/8.”

“Also, we want the noise of our image to be as low as possible so our ISO will be down around 200”

“So the last part is your shutter speed, your instinct might be to keep it relatively high, so you don’t get any motion blur in your picture. The auto modes on a lot of point shoot cameras are going to do that. The problem with that, is your background will tend to go really dark because you just don’t have enough light coming into the camera at that point. So the key here is to slow down your shutter speed to bring in more ambient light into your background.”

“The light that’s hitting your subject from the flash won’t change at all, and as long as you’re far enough away from the background the light won’t affect exposure. So now that you’ve got a slower shutter speed, you might find that you have some motion blur in the background.”

“It’s really no big deal at all, because the light from the flash is going to freeze your subject. Once you are dialed in on manual, you can just shoot away and forget all the technical stuff. So remember.. take control of the ratio of light between the foreground and the background, and give your pictures a sense of place that they wouldn’t have otherwise!”

The Stage

Stage A, chosen for this shoot, is a modest sized studio, great for a nice and clean high-key look. A long time favorite of our clients, Stage A gets beautiful direct sunlight in the morning through north and east-facing windows, and beautifully soft indirect light as the day goes on. Equipped with all of the same great gear that’s included with all of our studios – strobes, light modifiers, radio trigger, and paper backdrops – it’s a wonderful place to be able to achieve different looks all in the same place. A few words about the photographer and the shoot:

“Hello, my name is Ruben Chairez and I go by RubenC Photography.

This shoot was done with 2 of my models, Gianelly (white hair) and Samantha (black hair). I wasn’t planning on doing a halloween shoot as I was extremely busy. However, they convinced me to do a vampire shoot and I think it went well. I wanted a moody dark studio and Art 2 was what I needed. Set up a single light and used the window as a second light source and these are the results.”

About the stage:

Art 2, one of our clients’ most favorite stages, features a full rustic wood floor, as well as a platform that runs the entire length of the studio’s south side – flush with the windows. There is a wood staircase leading up to the platforms left side. The flooring is real wood throughout, and stained to a nice dark tone. Art 2 also features the same great equipment that adorns all of our studios – black, white, and gray photo backdrops as well as three strobes along with light modifiers. I’m an internationally published fashion / glamour Photographer. I also do beauty, headshots, boudoir and other genres. I’ve been shooting on and off since the late sixties; started up again in 2004 and haven’t stopped since because my passion won’t let me! Lighting is my thing! I shoot in studio or on-location, both commercially and for pleasure. I’ve shot at FD Photo Studio many times on client productions.

Muse Usha Dean (@ushadean) and I (@ken.saunders) came up with some cool concepts we wanted to try in your rain room. It was a wonderful shoot and your staff was very helpful, friendly and accommodating

We pretty much accomplished everything we planned in 3 hours and I believe the results speak for themselves!
