Our Guide to Studio Lighting Easy Setup

Our Guide to Studio Lighting Easy Setup

Having troubles with setting up the lights we provide in our studio? No worries. Mastering exposure with studio strobes is no-brainer. In fact it will not take more than 10 minutes in order to calculate right settings for your camera depending on the strobe lights, the distance of the light from a subject, kind of modifier and a power level on the strobe. Now we will not go into details of science behind these calculations as we strive to provide a concise, easy to digest guide of how to get you set up quick. No expensive tools, light meters or such required. Let’s go.

Our Guide to Studio Lighting Easy Setup -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Tutorial, Studio Photography, strobe lights, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Paul C Buff, modeling, Los Angeles, guidelines, Guide number, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, f number, exposure, DTLA, blog, aperture, Alien Bees 800

Preparation

Before you take your first shot here are the initial steps for the light set up
  1. Turn on the strobe lights, set it to full power and click a test button to make sure it works.
  2. Use the remote control trigger that our staff member provides for free. Place it on your camera’s hot shoe.
  3. Settings: Set your camera to manual mode, your shutter speed to 1/125th of a second, and your ISO to 100. Now the only parameter you’d have to deal with is F-number (aperture).
  4. Runa calculator app on your iPhone/Android.
  5. Think in full stops – 1- 1.4- 2- 2.8- 4- 5.6- 8- 11- 16- 22- 32. Most cameras have much more precise tuning with numbers in between this pattern. Yet for this guide you would not need to worry about it.

Use strobe light’s guide number

The guide number is a child of complicated math formulas and calculations based of Inverse Square Law. Long story short, it is used to calculate the F-number depending on the distance from the subject to the light and the kind of the light. Here, at FD we mostly use Paul C Buff Alien Bee 800’s which have a guide number 109 when used with 7 inch modifier ( in feet). There are two main ways to use this guide number, that will be useful to you. You can choose your aperture based on the desired outcome of your photo and calculate where to put your strobe, or you can place your strobe for a desired lighting effect and calculate the correct aperture.

Find out your Aperture

Some lighting effects require strobes to be in certain positions, and distances from your subject and other strobes. In other circumstances, your strobe might be in a fixed position and it cannot be moved. In this case, the easiest way to figure out your needed aperture is to measure the distance from the light to your model (in feet) and then divide the Guide Number ( 109 ) by that distance. For instance, if your distance is 7 feet then: 172 divided by 7 for a result of 15. Take the closest number in our pattern – f/16 is your correct exposure.
Our Guide to Studio Lighting Easy Setup -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Tutorial, Studio Photography, strobe lights, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Paul C Buff, modeling, Los Angeles, guidelines, Guide number, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, f number, exposure, DTLA, blog, aperture, Alien Bees 800
Taken by: @josefjassophoto

Find out your Strobe Distance

Conversely, if you know your desired aperture, simply divide the guide number by it. For example, if you want to have f/11 aperture then: divide the guide number 109 by 11  and get 9.9 as your result. So, for a correct exposure place your light 9.9 feet away from the model. That is it. Easy.   Attention: If you want to decrease the power of the strobe light then the guide number will decrease accordingly – half power of the light is a half of the guide number.

Working with different modifiers

The output of the strobe light in terms of exposure depends of the kind of modifiers you use: Modifiers that decrease the amount of light on the model and require larger aperture or closer distance: -Soft boxes -Translucent Umbrellas Modifiers that increase the amount of light on the model and require smaller aperture or further distance: -beauty dishes -silver umbrellas Our Guide to Studio Lighting Easy Setup -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Tutorial, Studio Photography, strobe lights, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Paul C Buff, modeling, Los Angeles, guidelines, Guide number, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, f number, exposure, DTLA, blog, aperture, Alien Bees 800Taken by: @jonsams.jpg Although the modifier influences the aperture, it rarely changes it by the full stop. Thus, if you choose to alter your aperture in these situations, feel free to use F numbers in between our   1- 1.4- 2- 2.8- 4- 5.6- 8- 11- 16- 22- 32 pattern. Changing your aperture depending on the modifier and getting that into a habit would not take long for you. Soon enough you will be adjusting it on the fly. Although this guide is created to aid your studio set up and save up some time, the creative process sometimes requires to step outside the precise math and make decisions based on emotion or concept. In no way we want you discourage you in experimenting. Our main advise is to have fun with your projects and make some great photos! **Cover photo is courtesy of @nikavphoto, @nastya_atanession, @makeupbyevelyn *** All photos were taken at FD Photo Studio.

The design concept of the Telegraph Ave is as follows:
“The clothes are all about embracing every aspect of your child’s life. Whether your child is 1 month old or 10 years old, the clothes are designed for ultimate flexibility, comfort and style. They move your kid seamlessly from playground to nap time to play date to party time.
Telegraph Ave clothes are designed for versatility and room to grow. Go urban by adding a leather jacket and a pair of boots. Go surfer beach chill while barefoot in the sand. Go monochrome cool one day, and eclectic bohemian the next. All you need is one outfit to take the style in any direction you feel like. And the best part? Most pieces are designed to grow with your child: overalls are cuffed so they can be unrolled with growth; harems turn into cropped harems; tunics can be worn as dresses.
Telegraph Ave: be HIP. be PRESENT. be YOU.”

Adorned by gracious moves their fine work shines through the picture with elegance and gleam. “Back in June 2016, Rochelle and Phoebe Dingman from Shear Fashion Salon and Michelle Nicole Ng from Michelle Nicole Photography  traveled from the Bay Area, California to collaborate on a photoshoot at FD Studio’s Art 2 room. For the past six years, they have been working together on miscellaneous nail and beauty projects, entered in competitions, and have been featured in magazines such as Nails Magazine and Nail Pro. For years, they have been planning to photograph their cousin, Sammy, a ballet dancer who attends the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Sammy is working towards becoming a professional ballet dancer and has performed in the Nutcracker for two years and the Spring Ballet at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. The story behind this session was to photograph a ballerina and create a nail design to theme a ballerina. We loved FD Studio’s natural light and rustic warehouse windowsills, that was exactly the look we were going for. With Shear Fashion Salon to do makeup, hair, and nails, and Michelle Nicole Photography to create the imagery, we used FD Studios to execute our vision. This image below was placed as top 10 for the 2017 Nails Magazine cover.”

Leading Ladies and Bridesmaids

Leading Ladies and Bridesmaids
Conceptual photography is complicated, well though trough yet the most impressing genre. To be able to tell a story behind the still picture is the art that underwent development for as long as humanity exists. From two dimensional depictions of Egyptian rites to contemporary hurdles of Edvard Munch’s time revealed in The Scream,  the story is what excites us the most and teaches us the best. Designer and Event Planner Melanie Embry had another plot in mind, the bridal story. Your best friends are always the leading ladies in your life and your wedding day is no different. Diana Ross wouldn’t be Diana Ross without the Supremes, and the bride wouldn’t be who she is without her best friends. Asking a friend to be in your Bridal Party is more than just sending a cute box or funny card it’s a celebration of the leading role they play in a soon to be brides life. This shoot will celebrate the bond a group best friends shares with intentional details while paying homage to the leading ladies of decades past.

He didn’t like to study, but became interested in photography, which overjoyed his parents. At first Patrick worked in a photo shop retouching images. On the 17th birthday his father gave him a personal, though not a new camera. After the training with Hans Foyrera, Patric began his career as a paid photographer. Although first earnings were small – 3 to 6 centimes, the number of clients gradually increased. Soon enough, by 1970 his photographs were already printed in popular magazines “Elle”, “Marie-Claire” and “20 ans”. Customers appreciated natural look of his shots, fans were trying to find out how he captured it. But his secret and basic principle was simple – photography has to be like a sport: persistent, every day training. In this case it’s possible to understand the errors, and get the necessary experience. 5 Fashion Photographers that Rule the World -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Vogue, Studio Photography, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, photoshoot ideas, Photoshoot, Patric Demarchelier, modeling, Mario Testino, Los Angeles, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, Bazaar, Annie Liebovitz When it comes to published works, the maestro has quite a few masterpieces. Annie works in different styles not only portraits but interior photography, landscapes, nudes and still life, reportage and other genres. While she was traveling in Japan her interest in photography grew stronger and deeper. Annie even started to attend evening photo classes . But education in the institute didn’t attract her much. After studying for a year, she went to Israel, and there, spending time at the excavation sites of the palace of Solomon in the Old Town and photographing it, Annie realizes that she would like to take pictures professionally as a career. Fixed on this belief, in the process of finding a niche for her professional passions she stumbled upon “Rolling Stone” magazine and got inspired by the photos of famous musicians. 5 Fashion Photographers that Rule the World -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Vogue, Studio Photography, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, photoshoot ideas, Photoshoot, Patric Demarchelier, modeling, Mario Testino, Los Angeles, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, Bazaar, Annie Liebovitz Her most famous projects are “Fallen Bicycle of Teenage Boy Just Killed by a Sniper”, “Women” ( co-author Susan Sontag) ,”A Photographer’s Life: 1990-2005″, “American Music”.

4. Mario Testino

DATE OF BIRTH: 10.30.1954 PLACE OF BIRTH: Lima, Peru 5 Fashion Photographers that Rule the World -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Vogue, Studio Photography, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, photoshoot ideas, Photoshoot, Patric Demarchelier, modeling, Mario Testino, Los Angeles, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, Bazaar, Annie Liebovitz Who is he? A talented indie photographer or a commercial photographer who aims to perfect e-commerce genre? In different periods of life he gives different answers to these questions. Sometimes he feels as “a fisher of wonderful moments,” saying that “… the magic of photography is that it reflects the one thing that did not exist before and will not happen again in the future.” And sometimes he would claim completely different approach to photography: “Our job – to get customers to buy clothes because it is our most important task and no matter how attractive it would be to see our pictures on the walls of art galleries, or sell them as works of art. first of all we have to sell clothes … ” 5 Fashion Photographers that Rule the World -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Vogue, Studio Photography, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, photoshoot ideas, Photoshoot, Patric Demarchelier, modeling, Mario Testino, Los Angeles, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, Bazaar, Annie Liebovitz His path to the global success was not so rapid. In the beginning of his carrier Mario was practicing on  models who worked as waitresses at the bar. Some time later Mario realized that for serious pictures he needs good components. He loans money from the bank, buys lighting equipment and starts working with the more successful models. 20 years later in his career, in 1995, when the House of Versace models invited him to make pictures of a new collection, Testino learned the fine art of  helping the model to fully unfold in front of the lens. Back then his approach was innovative and somewhat questionable. But surprisingly Versace was able to detect and heed his talent – the ability to take pictures of the clothes so that it “speaks” for itself. It is indeed a rare gift  to be able to show what you want to sell, in no way distracting from the artistic value of the photograph as a whole. And Mario Testino certainly possesses it to the fullest. 5 Fashion Photographers that Rule the World -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Vogue, Studio Photography, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, photoshoot ideas, Photoshoot, Patric Demarchelier, modeling, Mario Testino, Los Angeles, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, Bazaar, Annie Liebovitz His works were constantly seen in “Vogue” and “ Vanity Fair”, as well as “Any Objections?” (1998), “Front Row Back Stage, Bulfinch Press” (1999), “Mario Testino: Portraits, Bulfinch Press” (2002), “Kids, Scriptum Editions” (2003), “Let Me In, Taschen” (2007), “Lima, Peru, Damiani” (2007)

Few words about the experience Sarah and her team had in our stages:
“The indoor/studio shoot was for the streetwear brand DOPE based here in Los Angeles and shot by Ashley Garner, model is Stacey Hash, styled by Sarah Temperilli, and makeup by Mistica Arellano. Ashley and Sarah are a LA based creative duo who also is a couple. Ashley started having Sarah style his shoots this past summer and they’ve grown into a team of great models, makeup artists, and behind the scenes crew that’s always working to produce great content for brands in LA. Ashley was brought on to shoot for the brand DOPE and FD studio was a great choice with the vibe he wanted for Stacey.
The denim look out on the rooftop is for the brand ManEater. This is the stylists personal brand that launched in October 2016. The look on the rooftop is a teaser from her next collection Capsule 2 dropping later this spring. “
