*cover photo is taken by @lorenzobelmontephoto. Model@lonnielenyea.  Model Agency @4n6design.   Nowadays there is a common misconception that to become a photographer it is enough to just watch a couple of youtube videos or purchase a few video tutorials from known photographers. While you might get away with it, in a long run this learning method will not give a solid infrastructure of knowledge that truly professional photographers have. Most US universities provide art and design programs for their students but only a few excel at developing groundbreaking curriculum that will get a rookie to the A list.

Among growing computerization of all industries it is sometimes frustrating and a bit scary to see how many jobs may soon replace human experts with tireless robots. In the industry of photography as we speak there are light boxes being developed to shoot e-commerce, product shots, look books that will not involve humans.
One genre is still challenging to for the computer mind – beauty shots. With the amount of imagination and creativity it is still impossible to replicate man made marvels with formulas and algorithms.
Photographer Nika Velikova had a creative beauty session with the model Anastasia Gordeyko-Atanessian is stage Art 1.

New York might still hold the title of the American fashion capitol but Los Angeles has gotten really close over the last 5 years to take that title away. With many fashion schools being recently established in Downtown and greater Los Angeles we can witness a new movement in the fashion angeleno industry emerging. Representing this vanguard, designer Adolfo Sanchez has brought his new collection “F.U.” to our stage for a series of dark and stunning shots.

Here is a little about the designer and the purpose of the shoot:
“Adolfo Sanchez began his career in 2006, when he decided to channel his creativity into starting a women’s ready-to-wear line. Over the years, he’s had the opportunity of collaborating with designers, celebrity stylists, and industry influencers. Eventually, he grew his business into a brand that not only offered women’s ready-to-wear, but custom evening wear and bridal wear as well.
His new collection titled “F.U.” launched February 12th as part of New York Fashion Week. The designer teamed up with model Ava Capra, celebrity hair stylist Michael Haase, and PepperTea Productions in a recent photo shoot for the launch of his latest collection. “It’s such an amazing feeling when you can gather up a sick team and bring your vision to life,” states Sanchez, “I wanted to revisit the days when I first started my obsession with fashion and couldn’t be more happy with how this shoot turned out.”

The organizer of the shoot, Tatiana Marcet, was very kind to share the experience of shooting in stage Pro I.
“We used the FD Photo Studio to shoot some eCommerce photos for the upcoming website “Santuca Swimwear”. The website will be offering Brazilian swimwear from different Brazilian brands.
We recruited glamsquad for hair and make-up and they did a fantastic job in getting the model ready. Super easy to book and the girls were both super professional and helpful!
The model, Natali Gomes de Oliveiraand was perfect for the shoot as she is Brazilian and so are our suits! So she could bring a little bit of her Latin flavor to the photos! She was a swimwear model for many years in Miami, and recently decided to move to LA where her career is now taking off.
The photographer Patricia Pena Lamovec is a veteran photographer. She has focused mainly on fitness and lifestyle photos, working with many brands like “Spiritual Gangster”, “lululemon”, and various athletes and yogis. We thought she would be the perfect person to capture the photos for our website because of the life she brings to her photos. It is as if you were part of that moment, which is what we are looking to bring to our site: we want people to feel as if they were taking part in it.”

Where to Rent Equipment: Los Angeles

Where to Rent Equipment: Los Angeles -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, sharegrid, Samy's, rental stages, rental equipment, Photoshop, Photoshoot, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, lensprotogo, History of photography, gear, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, borrowlenses, blog
*cover photo is taken by @aestheteandderive. Models @randanelson & @ninanelson.   Have a budget camera but want to switch to a more expensive, top line professional equipment? It is always a good idea to test each camera/lens first before spending tremendous amount of money on it. Luckily, in Los Angeles there is at least 4 places you can rent from. Their prices vary, their conditions differ but none the less each place has great deals that you can take advantage of and try out your new soon to be owned toy. To draw a comparison among 4 rental places let’s pick a camera and lens that we would check prices for. Let’s say you want to shoot a portrait. You are about to get the best what Canon currently offers – Canon EOS 7D Mark II  camera, their true A-list gadget. You also want to get a great lens to shoot portrait – a short telephoto lens with an ideal portrait focal length with which you can easily move in close and take shots with no distortion or move further from the model and  and take full body shot yet still be close enough to communicate with model. You also want to choose the telephoto lens that is a prime lens so you can benefit from wide apertures it offers. So you choose Canon EF 85mm f/1.8. Where to Rent Equipment: Los Angeles -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, sharegrid, Samy's, rental stages, rental equipment, Photoshop, Photoshoot, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, lensprotogo, History of photography, gear, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, borrowlenses, blog Where to Rent Equipment: Los Angeles -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, sharegrid, Samy's, rental stages, rental equipment, Photoshop, Photoshoot, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, lensprotogo, History of photography, gear, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, borrowlenses, blog Now that you have chosen the desired kit, let’s shop around and get great rental rates.

BORROWLENSES.com

One of first online rental equipment shops, Borrowlenses has great variety of cameras, lenses, gadgets for video and options to purchase used gear. Where to Rent Equipment: Los Angeles -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, sharegrid, Samy's, rental stages, rental equipment, Photoshop, Photoshoot, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, lensprotogo, History of photography, gear, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, borrowlenses, blog Here is a few words about the history of the company:
“Starting with just a handful of lenses in 2007, two best friends – Mark Gurevich and Max Shevyakov – set out to make gear more affordable through rentals. As word spread about our services, Mark and Max made every effort to hire great, local talent who are dedicated to great customer service and deeply passionate about photography and videography. For years since, customers have entrusted the BL team to provide an ever growing selection of cameras, lenses, lighting kits, audio equipment, and production support systems that are suitable for both novices and pros. The most important element of our success has always been our dedicated, passionate, and loyal customers, who we consider to all be “silent partners” of BorrowLenses.com. We have been entrusted by our customers to take us along with them on their photographic and cinematic journey.”
With Borrowlenses you have to rent an item for at least 3 days. For Canon EOS 7D Mark II the price is  $54 for 3 days, $78 for a week, the price goes lower for more rental days. You also have an optional coverage against damage that costs $8.09 for 3 days. 3 days is enough to test a camera and you want to play it save so you choose 3 day option and add coverage. For Canon EF 85mm f/1.8. the price is $20 for 3 days, with  $2.15 coverage against damage. For the delivery there are few options: You can either pick the item for free from their office (only in San Carlos, CA or Waltham, MA), ship to the nearest UPS location or ship it to your home (depending on how fast you want it the shipping cost is $20-30).  You want to ship it to you home though, so you choose home delivery option.

YOUR TOTAL for both with shipping (excluding tax) is $114.20

Pretty good price for 3 day use of professional equipment. Let’s shop more.

SHAREGRID.com

This online store has a pretty unique approach that resembles Uber model. You have a ton of photographers and videographers who own the grid and let you rent it from them. There is no center store, you just pick it up directly from a person. The complication is that if you have multiple items to rent you either drive yourself to that person to get the gear or you order $30 delivery. Let’s check how much our kit would cost to rent here for 3 days. Where to Rent Equipment: Los Angeles -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, sharegrid, Samy's, rental stages, rental equipment, Photoshop, Photoshoot, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, lensprotogo, History of photography, gear, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, borrowlenses, blog You can rent it for as short as 1 day period. Among multiple offers from various owners I have found Canon EOS 7D Mark II for $40 a day. There are types of coverage: Damage+Theft, Damage Only or Security Deposit. For the sake of matching the same deal as was at Borrowlenses we will choose Damage Only for $15.50. Sharegrid charges community fee $6. Your total for just a camera is $171.50. You cannot just order it. You have to request it form the owner first so he could approve your request first and then you will get it. For Canon EF 85mm f/1.8. the price for 3 days with damage coverage, community fee and delivery is $70. Keep in mind that you have to order delivery separately for each item since they are at different locations. Once again request it first, get approved by owner, get the gear.

YOUR TOTAL for both with shipping is $241.50.

Not the cheapest option. Let’s shop more.

LENSPROTOGO.com

Similar to the business model of Borrowlenses this online shop has a perk of free shipping. Where to Rent Equipment: Los Angeles -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, sharegrid, Samy's, rental stages, rental equipment, Photoshop, Photoshoot, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, lensprotogo, History of photography, gear, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, borrowlenses, blog Here a few words about the company itself:
“We hand draw robots fighting dinosaurs on the cardboard boxes that we ship our gear in when our customers ask us to. Well… at least that is why our customers say we go ‘above and beyond’. Oh! We also include a special treat in every rental. We don’t want anyone getting a sugar low! Speaking of rentals, we’re LensProToGo! An online, nationwide, photo and video rental company that ships all over the US. We make getting the gear photographers and filmmakers want SUPER easy and safe. They can order online while sitting on their couch and it shows up at their front door, 5 steps away. (Up to 53 steps away if they have a super fancy house.) Even better, we ship everything in Pelican Cases so it’s journey across the states is as safe as can be! We can even ship to hotels, which is great for those who are traveling but don’t want to carry the gear on the plane. We’re all photographers and filmmakers too so we know the hassle of taking the gear through an airport. And since I mentioned it, it’s a requirement that every person working here is a pro shooter. It’s something we’re extremely proud of. We want to act as a great resource for our customers when they have questions (and boy do we get a lot of them!). To date, there isn’t a question we haven’t been able to answer. We can even answer any questions about Star Wars, thanks to our office nerd, Ben. Just something we like to offer on the side!”
Lensprotogo bases their rates on a 4 day minimum period. Of course you can rent it for 3 days but the price would be the same.  Since the price is the same lets get our kit for 4 day period. For our kit Canon EOS 7D Mark II + Canon EF 85mm f/1.8, included protection and free shipping

YOUR TOTAL (excluding tax) is $156.00.

Pretty competitive with Borrowlenses but still the second place. Let’s check the last spot.

SAMY’s

Good old Samy’s. Founded in 1976 this store has seen its ups and downs, helped a lot of photographers and videographers to get what they need and has already become a legend. This store still has 4 locations in Greater Los Angeles are that provide the gear to purchase and rent. You pick it up in the store, you return it back to the store, the old fashioned way. Where to Rent Equipment: Los Angeles -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, sharegrid, Samy's, rental stages, rental equipment, Photoshop, Photoshoot, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, lensprotogo, History of photography, gear, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, borrowlenses, blog Here is a little info of about their legacy:

“For over 40 years, Samy’s Camera has been the leader in sales of high quality imaging products and the ultimate resource for the professional and amateur photographer. Knowledgeable sales staff, exceptional customer service, and an impressive up-to-date inventory are the reasons that Samy’s Camera enjoys a loyal following. Samy founded Samy’s Camera in 1976 with a vision for a full service store. This vision is exemplified in all of our locations including our flagship store on Fairfax Boulevard, with three floors stocked with the latest and most exciting selection of photographic, video and electronics equipment available.

Samy’s Camera regularly hosts equipment demonstrations, special sessions with manufacturers, product training, and guest classes – all in addition to our own classes held in our state of the art computer lab at Samy’s EDU. Our EDU blog is a place to find useful information online about classes, workshops and photo trips. It’s also a place to connect to the photo community and see helpful videos from our instructors and friends.”

In order to get the prices for the equipment you would need to call them directly (you can find all numbers here ). They do not provide the insurance but take the deposit instead. Obviously there is  no shipping costs involved since it the in-store service.

5 Most Expensive Photographs Ever Sold

5 Most Expensive Photographs Ever Sold

How much can a photograph cost? A photo produced by a single click of finger and moderately manipulated on the computer may definitely raise the question of whether it is a legitimately expensive actionable art or a mass market affordable item. Going back to the history of art, sculptures and paintings such as Interchange  by Willem de Kooning were sold for tremendous amount of money (Interchange was sold in 2015 for $300 million). But can the same insane price be applied on the photograph, another still art that was never touched by a brush or human hand? It turns out it can. While we are not talking hundreds of millions, there tens of photographs that were sold for a million dollars or more. Let us tell you about 5 most expensive photographs ever sold.

Andreas Gursky – Rhein II (1999)

Sold for $4,338,500

5 Most Expensive Photographs Ever Sold -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Untitled #96, To Her Majesty, Studio Photography, Spiritual America, shot at FD Photo Studio, Richard Prince, Rhein II, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, paid photography, most expensive photographs, modeling, Los Angeles, Jeff Wall, History of photography, Gilbert & George, gear, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Dead Troops Talk, Cindy Sherman, blog, Andreas GurskyAndreas Gursky, German visual artist produced Rhein II in 1999 depicting the River Rhine. It si called “II” because it was a second and the largest of a set of six photographs created. Minimalistic, geometrically defined with straight horizontal lines across the field of view, this image was digitally edited to exclude dog-walkers and a factory building.  Justifying this manipulation of the image, Gursky said “Paradoxically, this view of the Rhine cannot be obtained in situ, a fictitious construction was required to provide an accurate image of a modern river.” The print was sold by auction at Christie’s New York on 8 November 2011  for $4,338,500 by the anonymous buyer.

Richard Prince – Spiritual America (1981)

Sold For $3,973,000

Alongside his early re-photographed magazine advertisements, this image did much to establish Prince’s reputation as an agent provocateur of the art world, whose practice examines notions of artistic subjectivity and originality while casting doubt on the authority of photographic images. Both the suggestive image of a young Brooke Shields and the work’s title have been taken from the public domain and re-presented to the viewer as an object for contemplation and critique. Prince has, in Marcel Duchamp’s words, “created a new thought for that object” by dislocating the image from its original context and enlisting it into his own conceptual program. The title Spiritual America comes from Alfred Stieglitz’s 1923 photograph of a gelded horse’s hindquarters–a famously ironic commentary on America’s culturally repressed society. Stieglitz, the father of modernist photography, would likely have been outraged by Prince’s appropriation of the present image as he believed in the purity of high culture and claimed a value for photography as a revealer of truths.” Read more here. The print was sold by auction at Christie’s New York on May 12, 2014 for $3,973,000.

Cindy Sherman – Untitled #96 (1981)

Sold For $3,890,500

The artist’s third series and the second to ever employ color, the associated pictures are widely acknowledged to be Sherman’s most accomplished, with editions housed in the Museum of Modern Art New York; currently on view in the artist’s major retrospective, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam and the present work from the Akron Art Museum. Created on a scale of two by four feet, they are credited with launching large-format photography as a high-art form. The Akron Art Museum was instrumental in this monumental shift as an early sponsor of Sherman’s art. One of the first public institutions to collect Sherman’s work, the museum acquired Untitled #96, the most-sought after image from the series, alongside her other seminal Untitled #93 (Black Sheets) directly from Metro Pictures, New York in 1981. It marked the beginning of a longstanding commitment and fruitful relationship with the artist; one which would see the Akron Art Museum organize her first major exhibition in 1984 that later travelled to the Walker Art Center and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In Untitled #96, perhaps the most ‘story-telling’ of the pictures, Sherman elaborated the scenario quite simply: “I was thinking of a young girl who may have been cleaning the kitchen for her mother and who ripped something out of the newspaper, something asking ‘Are you lonely?’ or ‘Do you want to be friends?’ or ‘Do you want to go on a vacation?’ She’s cleaning the floor, she rips this out and she’s thinking about it” (C. Sherman quoted in P. Schjeldahl, Cindy Sherman, exh. cat., Akron Art Museum, 1987, p. 11).” Read more here. The print was sold by auction at Christie’s New York in May 2011 for $3,890,500.

Gilbert & George –  To Her Majesty (1973)

Sold For $3,765,276

As with all the works in the Drinking Sculpturesseries, it consists of a group of black and white images commemorating evenings of drunkenness undertaken by the inseparable duo during a prolonged period of drinking bouts in the early 1970s. Gilbert & George inaugurated this series on their return to England following their spectacular success in both Europe and America with their work The Singing Sculpture, in which the artists had performed Flanagan and Allen’s vaudeville standard ‘Underneath the Arches’ to enthralled crowds of art world spectators. Having established their joint persona as an evolving work of art, Gilbert & George effectively brought Josef Beuys’ utopian vision of a social sculpture and a future where everyone is an artist to its logical conclusion. Despite the success of their live performances, Gilbert & George ultimately found the experience limiting and began to create pictures as a means of charting the progress of their lives and extending the idea of living sculpture without requiring their physical presence. The drinking series was motivated, however, by destructive, rather than creative urges.” Read more here. The print was sold by auction at Christie’s New York in on June 30, 2008 for $3,765,276.

Jeff Wall – Dead Troops Talk (A vision after an ambush of a Red Army patrol, near Moqor, Afghanistan, winter 1986) (1992)

Sold For $3,666,500

5 Most Expensive Photographs Ever Sold -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Untitled #96, To Her Majesty, Studio Photography, Spiritual America, shot at FD Photo Studio, Richard Prince, Rhein II, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, paid photography, most expensive photographs, modeling, Los Angeles, Jeff Wall, History of photography, Gilbert & George, gear, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Dead Troops Talk, Cindy Sherman, blog, Andreas GurskyDead Troops Talk (A Vision after an Ambush of a Red Army Patrol, near Moqor, Afghanistan, Winter 1986) is a monumental, glowing image by Jeff Wall. Created in 1992, this tableau of the dead rising up and conversing during the Soviet-Afghan War is one of the most recognized and written-about of all Wall’s works. In this image, Russian soldiers are shown sporting wounds that would not look out of place in a slasher flick, with dismembered limbs and cavities in their heads; a foot is even shown having been blasted off its owner and lodged behind a rock. This is the shell casing-strewn fog of war, yet is an image of aftermath, with the victorious Mujahedin shown picking through the loot. Unbeknownst to them, conversation has broken out among the troops, many of whom appear to be comparing notes, some of them humorously, in a deliberately traumatic and distorted resurrection. Wall explained that the inception of Dead Troops Talk came from out of the blue: “I had a sudden notion of a dialogue of the dead, coming from I don’t know where. It had nothing to do with the Afghan war, but the subjects needed to be soldiers because it seemed important that they would have died in an official capacity, that would surely give them something to talk about… At the time I was thinking about it, the Afghan war was coming to an end” (J. Wall, quoted in C. Burnett, Jeff Wall, exh. cat., London, 2005, p. 59). Read more here. The print was sold by auction at Christie’s New York in on May 8, 2012 for $3,666,500.
