3 Portrait Mistakes With Miguel Quiles

3-Portrait-Mistakes-With-Miguel-Quiles

Getting into the portrait photography? We feel you, we love it as well! As we are getting a lot of blog post submissions from our clients, we tend to notice some mistakes that new photographers tend to make while shooting with models. Today we are going to use the advice of Miguel Quiles and Adorama TV to explore three common portrait mistakes that hopefully you would avoid in the future. Mistake #1.

Lack of Communication With the Model

Often, while on set, photographers worry a lot about camera settings and technical aspects of how to get the right picture. You have to get your exposure right, your focus dead set and frame it properly, we get it. Meanwhile your model had also her/his thoughts and doubts on how to make the photos look better and whether they are up to the task. In this example, Miguel and his model gave a really good and at time funny rundown of what might go on in the photographer’s head and the model’s head when each is trying to figure out their problems on set. 3 Portrait Mistakes With Miguel Quiles -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, mistakes portrait photography, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog Always stay in communication with the model. Cheer up and encourage. Tell them they are doing a good job. This constant support will help the model to unlock and relax thus improving their looks and emboldening their desire for variations and experiments. Going further.

Eyes are Not In Focus

Oftentimes photographers forget about this important aspect of the portrait photography. They would have their cameras set on center focus and would end up with photos where the chest of the model is more in focus than the eyes, thus ruining the whole idea behind the concept of “portrait photography”. So if you tend to forget about adjusting your focus accordingly – this is the time to catch up. Whether it is a selective focus or in Sony case the eye autofocus, make sure that your lens focused tack sharp on eyes first.

Eyes Do Not Look In the Right Direction

For this mistake the photographer provides a very nice example of what usually happens when models are shy or inexperienced. Usually, to avoid looking directly into camera they would turn their face to the side but their eyes would turn even further away from the camera, thus exposing more white space of eye balls to the camera. 3 Portrait Mistakes With Miguel Quiles -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, mistakes portrait photography, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog This is not pretty. Make sure to communicate with your model to have her/his eyes look in the direction the face is turned. 3 Portrait Mistakes With Miguel Quiles -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, mistakes portrait photography, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blogWatch the full tutorial video of David Bergman for Adorama TV here:

3 Ways To Set Your Flash Exposure with Daniel Norton

Three-Ways-To-Set-Your-Flash-Exposure-with-Daniel-Norton

Did you know that all of our stages already come equipped with three strobe lights available for your use? While this great opportunity to enhance your photos with a professional studio light is always within your reach, many photographers decline this offer due their inexperience of working with the studio lighting. Today we are going to show how to use lights or, more importantly tune lights to a proper exposure so you would get nice light balance on the model without burning or overshadowing  the picture. Photographer Daniel Norton from Adorama TV will  show you three ways to set your exposure using flash. There will be three techniques to cover: Using TTL Metering, A Flash Meter or your Histogram, all very easy techniques. Once eliminating the ambient light from your exposure, the next step in flash photography is to set the flash to give you a proper exposure.

Using TTL

TTL means “through the lens” metering which means that you are using your camera’s meter when you are using a flash exposure. A lot of people do not use it that much in the studio due to the fact that it re-meters itself every time you take a new frame. So this technique is great when you have a lot of variables changing all the time – lights moving, models moving, locations changing, etc. On the other hand, when everything is in place, it is not necessarily needed. Yet this feature is in lots of flashes now so we would go over that first. We start at having it set at 0. 3 Ways To Set Your Flash Exposure with Daniel Norton -Tutorial, TTL metering, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, proper exposure, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, Histogram, gear, gallery, Flash Meter, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Daniel Norton, blog With TTL metering you probably would need to do some adjustments. Most likely this technique will give you a decent exposure yet some adjusting might be required. From the photo above one can see that a few highlights on the model’s forehead are a bit hot. To remedy that use the flash exposure compensation on your camera and lower it one stop less or so. 3 Ways To Set Your Flash Exposure with Daniel Norton -Tutorial, TTL metering, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, proper exposure, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, Histogram, gear, gallery, Flash Meter, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Daniel Norton, blog

Using a Flash Meter

Using light meter is probably more classic approach. Set the parameters in a light meter (Daniel is having it at 1/250 for shutter speed and ISO 100.) 3 Ways To Set Your Flash Exposure with Daniel Norton -Tutorial, TTL metering, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, proper exposure, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, Histogram, gear, gallery, Flash Meter, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Daniel Norton, blog Now point the light meter at the light source close to the model. Depending in where you light power settings are, the light meter might show you that the picture is either over exposed ( F stop would rise to 16 or so) or underexposed. Make proper adjustments on your light source and decrease/increase its power level accordingly. Daniel has adjusted the power level of the strobe so his F stop would sit at 5.6. 3 Ways To Set Your Flash Exposure with Daniel Norton -Tutorial, TTL metering, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, proper exposure, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, Histogram, gear, gallery, Flash Meter, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Daniel Norton, blog The result turned out to be a little bit dark, so we would need to make an adjustment. As with TTL technique the meter technique will also give you only approximate results. So always double check the exposure and adjust it as your eye pleases. In this example Daniel turned the light source half a stop higher to get a brighter exposure and get nice results. 3 Ways To Set Your Flash Exposure with Daniel Norton -Tutorial, TTL metering, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, proper exposure, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, Histogram, gear, gallery, Flash Meter, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Daniel Norton, blog

Using A Histogram

For this technique the photographer uses a nice little gadget called “Pocket digital calibration target”. It gives you three neutral  colors – black, white and grey, that you would use to check it against camera’s histogram. 3 Ways To Set Your Flash Exposure with Daniel Norton -Tutorial, TTL metering, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, proper exposure, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, Histogram, gear, gallery, Flash Meter, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Daniel Norton, blog Have the model hold it in front of the face and take a shot to see where these colors are positioned on your camera’s histogram. Make sure to fill the frame with the target meaning that all three colors need to be in the frame. 3 Ways To Set Your Flash Exposure with Daniel Norton -Tutorial, TTL metering, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, proper exposure, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, Histogram, gear, gallery, Flash Meter, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Daniel Norton, blog In this example the photographer uses Capture One software tethered with his camera so he can see results right away and check Capture One’s histogram for more convenient adjustment. As you can see on the picture above the histogram is located on the top left corner and all three colors are sitting nicely at the levels they need to be (evenly spread out). If you are getting the different result, try adjusting the power level on your light to get close to this example. 3 Ways To Set Your Flash Exposure with Daniel Norton -Tutorial, TTL metering, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, proper exposure, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, Histogram, gear, gallery, Flash Meter, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, Daniel Norton, blog   Watch the full tutorial video of David Bergman for Adorama TV here:

“Amarilo was founded in 2011 with the intention of redefining classic jewelry for the modern woman. This philosophy transcends into the design – unassumingly, simplistic jewelry that elevates a woman’s everyday style. By offering essential pieces to be worn individually or in multiples, the line has quickly become recognized for its take on layering. This shoot was for our recent collection Intention: The beauty of an Amarilo woman is found in her validation in herself and ever-present self love. Her root values are embraced in her casual sense of style. At the heart of the line, the core collection offers the foundation of staples for any woman’s jewelry wardrobe. Designed with purpose, the line emphasizes longevity through mastered jewelry techniques and exceptional fit. Some unique elements we incorporated in this collection were a few signature pieces from our core collection, romantically paired with a touch of fresh water pearls. Our ‘Intention Collection’ is a curation of classic staples thoughtfully designed to be worn solo or effortlessly layered allowing the Amarilo woman to make it her own.”

Unity by Bekah Wriedt

Darling By Bekah Wriedt

Photographer Bekah Wriedt  had undertaken a exciting task for her project – to create a spirit of Unity amongst human beings. Inspired by Martha Upper, Bekah took her poem and visualized it through the images. Unity by Bekah Wriedt -wrongron, Wrong Ron, Unity, Studio Photography, Stage A, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, photography services, photographer, modeling, Los Angeles, high fashion, FD photo studio, fashion, DTLA, Dance, blog, Bekah Wriedt, !done, !Av2 A few words written by Martha Upper that served as an inspiration for the photographer:

Unity

There is nothing more beautiful and ideal than a harmonious community. A sound of different notes that play separate pitches for a common tone. A clash of tunes and disturbance that resolve for an interval of melody.

The absence of unity is a void that many people feel no need to fill. Why change what has been the same generation after generation?

The constant separation and segregation is creating a mental distrust among one another. Often unknowingly, we have caused a cycle of judgment and stereotypes. We stick with who we know and where we are comfortable.

Race, appearance, religion, and backgrounds make us who we are. They do not make us monsters who are incapable of loving someone unlike us. We must strip ourselves of the lies that we have been impounded with time and time again.

When we finally see that we are truly one kind, one human race put here together to create something beautiful, then we may finally be able to understand unity.

Instead of fighting one another, let us fight for a common cause.

The voices of an army can scream with determination to finally be heard. We are the voices of that army.

We have flown out our white doves holding olive branches in their mouths to show that we are at peace. We are one. No amount of variance can keep us from generating one solid voice that speaks for truth.

Forget ethnicities, socioeconomics, and differences, and embrace love, passion, and each other.

“My name is Zuz (I never go by my full name) and I am a portrait + fashion photographer based out in Los Angeles. I did this extremely cameral one-on-one shoot for a client who wanted to step out of her comfort zone, open up a bit and let go of herself. We chose Art 3 stage because it offers great space with beautiful natural light and lots of props like flower wall or the bathtub, making every set unique and different. It was perfect for our feminine, soft and natural look that we were going for.  “

” This film embodies many of my fascinations and is a pure expression of my authentic self.

I LOVE:
Dance. Music. Filmmaking. Storytelling. Suspense. Thrills. Halloween. Provocation. The Human Condition. Psychology. Psychosis. Learning Things.
I had absolutely no intentions of doing any of the post production, but my vision was so specific that I decided to see it through to every last detail and frame. During this process I taught myself some advanced editing techniques, how to color grade, and applied some of my basic sound mixing skills. In other words, hours and hours and hours and hours of going crosseyed staring at my laptop and looking up Video tutorials (thank you community).”

How to do double exposure technique with David Bergman

Double Exposure Technique with David Bergman, Adorama TV

Have you ever seen these cool photos that look like two or more pictures being merged into one, where the first photo acts as a contour and the second fills that contour with its details? Yes, I am talking about the “double exposure” photos, a pretty common technique that got introduced in early 20th century. Back in the days when everything was shot on film, sometimes when you load the film into the camera it would not advance properly and you’ll end up with multiple exposures in one shot. Later, photographers figured out that it might be a cool affect to implement. Nowadays of course, it can be easily done on the computer. Yet, today we are going to learn how to do it with the camera only. Our speaker David Bergman will be using his Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR.

PUT YOUR CAMERA ON ADDITIVE MODE

How to do double exposure technique with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, editorial and fashion, DTLA, double exposure, David Bergman, Canon 5D Mark IV, blog, Adorama TV First, let’s go into camera’s settings and under “multiple exposure” choose additive mode. In this mode, photos will layer on top of each other, just like if you were shooting two exposures on the same frame of film. You will see how things work in the lighter and darker parts of your image. When images are put together, the brighter part of the photo basically wins out. So white will stay white, no matter what the other exposure looks like. You can really see both exposures better, if they both have darker tones to demonstrate.

Taking First Exposure

Taking Second Exposure

For the second frame David is after some texture. He is experimenting with tree leaves, rocks and other available material. Experiment With Other Modes

There are other modes in camera that you can experiment with like “average”, “dark” and “bright”. Try playing with those and let us know which one you liked better!
