How to make wet portraits with Gavin Hoey

Wet-Portraits-with-Gavin-Hoey

Looking for experiments in your portrait series? Tired to shoot from the same angle? We might have an idea that would make your work look more splashy! Firstly, you would need to take all precautions to not damage your equipment and background – get plenty of towels. Secondly, freezing water in the photo would require a flash light, in this example it is Flashpoint StreakLight 360 Ws Creative Collection . How to make wet portraits with Gavin Hoey -wet portrait, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, Gavin Hoey, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog Today we will show a technique of Gavin Hoey and Adorama TV  that will get you up to speed with “wet portraits”.

Wet hands

Before throwing a bucket of water into model’s face let’s test out first how splashes would look on hands. It will save both the model’s clothes and your time of setting the camera/light settings. On the StreakLight 360 we want to set a very low flash duration. Thus we will lower the power and set it on 1/64. How to make wet portraits with Gavin Hoey -wet portrait, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, Gavin Hoey, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog The flash light is positioned behind the model for  purpose of highlighting drops of water and eliminating it in the shot. Plus the shadow on the model’s hands/face creates more dramatic effect. You can place the light in front of the model to experiment yet the result would be different in delivery. How to make wet portraits with Gavin Hoey -wet portrait, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, Gavin Hoey, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog Camera’s shutter speed is 1/250. ISO 400 to give more room for flash light adjustment. And the F stop on camera is F4. Wet face.

Once we tried on hands, we can move on to start pouring water over model’s face. In this setup the model is leaning back and the water is being poured from above. Before shooting, it never hurts to check camera’s settings again using light meter. Also, it is a good idea to check if your lens has gotten any drops of water on it and wipe it out using a lens cloth. Expression and props.

Once the lighting is setup correctly and you are already getting shots you wanted it is time for the icing on the cake. It really makes a difference when a model shows strong emotions through facial expression. Having some props like a helmet or goggles might add an interest to the photo and make it more dramatic. How to shoot dramatic portraits using a beauty dish with Joel Grimes

How to shoot dramatic portraits using a beauty dish with Joel Grimes -Westcott Lighting, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Joel Grimes, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, dramatic portrait, blog, Beauty Dish

A beauty dish is one of the essential modifiers that every photographer should have in the arsenal. According to photographer Joel Grimes from Westcott Lighting, the most dramatic effect that can be achieved with the beauty dish is who you either have the light going from top to bottom of from the side to side. These are the best, most beautiful lighting scenarios on the planet. Today we will be exploring the top-bottom setup. How to shoot dramatic portraits using a beauty dish with Joel Grimes -Westcott Lighting, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Joel Grimes, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, dramatic portrait, blog, Beauty Dish

Top Down Beauty Dish

In the first set up, Joel has the  24″ beauty dish right above the model, top down. That way any shadow from eyes, nose, chin, lips will go straight down. The length of the shadow can be adjusted by either bringing the light up or down. How to shoot dramatic portraits using a beauty dish with Joel Grimes -Westcott Lighting, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Joel Grimes, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, dramatic portrait, blog, Beauty Dish The background is black, which in the shot will turn grey since so much light hits it from the short distance. His camera is at the shutter speed 1/250, F stop 7.1 – the sharpest f stop on his 24-70 1.8 V2 lens. ISO is 100. How to shoot dramatic portraits using a beauty dish with Joel Grimes -Westcott Lighting, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Joel Grimes, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, dramatic portrait, blog, Beauty Dish In this example Joel is shooting with a rather wide angle (24-28mm), which is uncommon for the portrait photography. When shooting wide, the model’s hands in this example get bigger due to lens distortion – the kind of effect that the photographer is after. How to shoot dramatic portraits using a beauty dish with Joel Grimes -Westcott Lighting, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Joel Grimes, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, dramatic portrait, blog, Beauty Dish The first step is to get the exposure right. Since Joel wants to keep his camera lens at the sharpest F stop, he decides to change the intensity of the light instead to get proper exposure. How to shoot dramatic portraits using a beauty dish with Joel Grimes -Westcott Lighting, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Joel Grimes, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, dramatic portrait, blog, Beauty Dish If you feel like you would want to add a bit more drama to the picture, try raising the light a few inches and turning the strobe head a bit downwards. How to shoot dramatic portraits using a beauty dish with Joel Grimes -Westcott Lighting, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Joel Grimes, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, dramatic portrait, blog, Beauty Dish

Beauty dish + 2 edge lights

In this setup we are adding two edge lights on each side of the model. The goal is to create a sharp edge on the model’s face. How to shoot dramatic portraits using a beauty dish with Joel Grimes -Westcott Lighting, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Joel Grimes, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, dramatic portrait, blog, Beauty Dish We will start out with both lights being on equal distance and equal power. And then we will adjust the power level on the main light to bring more drama into the photo. How to shoot dramatic portraits using a beauty dish with Joel Grimes -Westcott Lighting, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Joel Grimes, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, dramatic portrait, blog, Beauty Dish To bring more drama into the photo you would need to find a proper balance between the center of the model’s face and sides. If the center is too lit, the image turns flat. If the center is too dark, you might loose the details. How to shoot dramatic portraits using a beauty dish with Joel Grimes -Westcott Lighting, Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, Joel Grimes, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, dramatic portrait, blog, Beauty Dish   Watch the full tutorial video of Joel Grimes for Westcott Lighting here:

How to use hard light for portraits with Mark Wallace

Using-Hard-Light-for-Portraits-with-Mark-Wallace

One of the most common things that photographers do when they get to use a studio strobe is they take the standard 7 inch reflector off the strobe head and put a soft box instead. So most of the time our clients do not even shoot with the 7 inch modifiers or snoots, or any other modifiers for a hard light, thus missing out on a lot of opportunities. Today we will study setups using just the hard light, with photographer Mark Wallace and Adorama TV . How to use hard light for portraits with Mark Wallace -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, hard light, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, Adorama TV

No modifiers.

In the first setup Mark uses a couple of strobes Profoto D1’s with out any modifiers. This setup is especially powerful if you are lighting for black and white photography. The key light is in front of the model, shooting from above. How to use hard light for portraits with Mark Wallace -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, hard light, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, Adorama TV The kicker light is to camera’s left, behind the model, shooting from the high to illuminate to model’s back. How to use hard light for portraits with Mark Wallace -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, hard light, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, Adorama TV The only thing that Mark is trying to avoid is the hard shadow on the wall behind the model. To hide the shadow we will be moving the key light to the side while pushing the shadow out of frame. How to use hard light for portraits with Mark Wallace -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, hard light, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, Adorama TV While you might get away with hiding the shadow on the wall out of the frame, you would still need to take into consideration the shadows on the model’s face. Please keep in mind that it is NOT a bad thing to have shadows on the face. On the contrary, it might add a dramatic effect to the photo. To play with the shadow have your model turn the face towards or against the light. How to use hard light for portraits with Mark Wallace -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, hard light, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, Adorama TV The more directional the camera position is compare to light the less shadows you would see on model’s face. With 7 inch modifier.

With the 7 inch modifier on the key light Mark is shaping the light to have a nice and smooth vignette on the wall instead having the light all over the place. How to use hard light for portraits with Mark Wallace -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, hard light, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, Adorama TV The model is placed right in front of the light. The camera shoots to the left from the light, eliminating the background. Placing the reflector right behind the model at the angle gives a little bit of kick to the model’s hair. How to use hard light for portraits with Mark Wallace -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, hard light, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, Adorama TV With the reflector the model’s hair has some highlights. Using hard light in black&white photography

In the last example Mark is shooting black and white. Still using one store with 7 inch modifier, the photographer placed it to the camera’s left, pretty close to the model, thus creating some hard dramatic shadows on the model’s face. How to use hard light for portraits with Mark Wallace -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Mark Wallace, Los Angeles, How To, hard light, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog, Adorama TV Using the black side on the v-flat behind the model, the photographer is going for a nice dark background. How to use fill flash & daylight With Daniel Norton

Using-Fill-Flash-&-Daylight-With-Daniel-Norton

Our studios are notorious for its perfect natural light condition. This pearl allures many photographers who like to work with no strobes, as it is perceived to be more difficult to master. Yet, sometimes the sun is to harsh on shadows and you want that second light to help out from other side, right? Today we will explore the technique of using the strobe as the fill light to aid our light balance when shooting with natural light as the key light.  With Daniel Norton and Adorama TV  let’s see who it is done.

Before the strobe is on.

Daniel has his camera set to shutter speed 1/250 and F stop at 10. He is only shooting with natural light. The flash is off. How to use fill flash & daylight With Daniel Norton -Tutorial, Studio Photography, strobe fill light, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, outdoor photography, natural light, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog After a quick test shot it is obvious that the light on the model is far from ideal. It is very directional, with dark shadows. How to use fill flash & daylight With Daniel Norton -Tutorial, Studio Photography, strobe fill light, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, outdoor photography, natural light, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog It is time to turn on the soft box light!

Tuning the strobe.

For this tutorial Daniel is using Chimera Pro II small Lightbank for the soft box and profoto B1X for the strobe. This light will be use only as the fill flash. That means, this light is not going to overpower the ambient light and make it look really dramatic. Instead, used as fill light, it will lit up nicely the model from the other side, yet still looking natural. To tune the strobe, Daniel is going to use his favorite Sekonic LiteMaster Pro L-478D-U Light Meter, to measure the sun light intensity and then match the intensity of the strobe to match the F stop as close as he can. How to use fill flash & daylight With Daniel Norton -Tutorial, Studio Photography, strobe fill light, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, outdoor photography, natural light, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, blog In this example, the light meter on the ambient light at 1/250 shutter speed show F8. Now it is time to shoot. Perfecting the light.

Usually meters can get you a good balance. But your eye can make it perfect! Try to play with going up or down the stop to see how it plays out. In this example Daniel has a few tries and chooses best to his liking.
