Stage Upgrade: Pro Stage I

Overwhelming number of clients expressed their desire to shoot in a stage that has a wooden floor across it. Yes, we do have stage Art 2 with its cool wooden platform installed, and the little wood floor corner of stage C would also fit the desired criteria. However it just felt like not enough. We wanted to step our game up in this direction. So…. Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you a newly remodeled, with dark wooden floor, awesome stage PRO I. This stage does NOT have a cyclorama wall anymore. Instead, it now has nice, clean and slick look, similar to our beloved art stages. It still features an Old Glory Red Wall with Silver Fainting Couch, the fire escape and regular set of backdrops and equipment that we provide with each stage. What is your Color Space setting ?

If you go to settings on a photo camera, you would find that most digital cameras have a setting called “Color Space” that usually gives two settings

sRGB
AdobeRGB

Which setting to choose? And what do these settings mean anyway? Today, with the frequent Adorama TV guest David Bergman, we learn the difference between two and when & why you should choose one over the other.

sRGB

sRGB or standard red green blue “is an RGB color space that HP and Microsoft created cooperatively in 1996 to use on monitors, printers, and the Internet” (Wiki). 99% of your work should be done in sRGB mode. Why? Because till this day it still remains a standard for web space, printing companies and magazines. If the image does not specify the color space, it gets converted to default sRGB.

AdobeRGB

AdobeRGB was developed by Adobe, Inc. in 1998 to enhance the color space. It reproduces about 35% more color information than sRGB. If you have more colors available then you can see more subtle variations and vibrancies in images. However, more doesn’t mean better. Since most web browsers still use sRGB, any image that you have in AdobeRGB will be converted to sRGB causing the color to be more subdued. In which case would you shoot in AdobeRGB color space? If you are fine art photographer and you use a high-end monitor with wide gamut, then AdobeRGB would fit the profile.

Shooting Raw

Most professional cameras have an option of shooting images in a raw format. Shooting raw will give you more freedom to change colors in post production without sacrificing the quality. At the post production stage you may decide which color space to use when editing and exporting. So it is always a good idea to shoot in raw format!

Alas, with growing rent rates, equipment prices and other factors we must take some steps towards adjusting our hourly rates and fees, just to keep up with the harsh reality of the business world. Starting April 23rd, our new rates came into effect. For any booking request that came before April 23rd, we will gladly keep old rates!

While the price have gone up for most of stages, we still offer convenient packages! Also, our stages A,B,F and Hill 6 will still be offered at the old cheap price, going as low as $24.99/hr (for 12 hour weekday package.)

The crew has chosen Stage A due to its size and affordability. Nevertheless, this Stage provides outstanding natural lighting conditions where there is a direct sunlight in the morning through north and east-facing windows, and beautifully soft indirect light as the day goes on. Equipped with all of the same great gear that’s included with all of our studios – strobes, light modifiers, radio trigger, and paper backdrops – it’s a wonderful place to be able to achieve different looks all in the same place. Stage Hill 2 is one of our latest additions and the second blackout stage we currently offer. Painted all black from top to bottom with the matte color this stage absorbs the light making it easier to control reflections and have complete control of the light painting. Spacious, nicely conditioned and minimalistic, Hill 2 is perfect for video and photo shoots, big or small crew. Photographer Marie at Maries Photography has had a great session shooting a model Olya Zymarewa. Although there is little known about the model and photographer, (model’s Instagram only has less than few dozens photos), both did a great job at capturing classic portraits as well as some lifestyle genre.

Stage D is one of the most spacious and most affordable spaces we currently offer. Suitable for both large and small production teams, this stage is on always on a high demand. Lighting conditions are of supreme quality. If working with natural light, towards the sunset the studio gets plenty of great, warm light through large south-west facing frosted windows. Creative director Nikiy Luna already has quite a few editorials in her portfolio arsenal. And this time she’s added another one! Collaborating with photographer Leonard Thompson, MUA Jade B., and model Christina Wen, the team produced well balanced, nicely lit beauty shots that appeared in @EditorialMagazine. Few words about the photographer:

“People ask me all the time what makes me do photography? Well, after thinking about it for a while I really didn’t have a choice, photography chose me! Photography has always allowed me to express myself. I love playing with lighting to create an emotional connection between the subject and the viewer. Stage Hill 1 has a few distinct features you will not find in any other stages. Facing the west side this stage gets lots of natural light in the afternoon and has amazing lighting conditions during the golden hour. Among included props are industrial wooden table with benches, two antique green chairs and white leather comfy chair. And the bed. The bed that comes with clean sheets (fees apply) and photogenic look, ready for always anticipated, the “bed scene” Besides, Hill 1 comes equipped with black, white and grey backdrops already installed and three strobe lights included in the hourly rate.
