Become Better Photographer: Choosing the Right Background with David Bergman

Become-Better-Photographer-Choosing-the-Right-Background-with-David-Bergman

Backgrounds can make or break your pictures. How do you find a good one when you’re outdoors? In this episode with David Bergman and Adorama TV we will show you  few tips on how to choose a background when you are outdoors.

The best backgrounds are ones that don’t distract you, and force your eye to go directly to your subject. Working in a photo studio, gives you the ultimate control over lighting and background. Obviously you don’t have nearly as much control when you’re outside. So you need to practice looking at things with a critical eye. You can decide where to put your subject, and you can line them up with a background that will work to your advantage. You just have to know what to look for. Here are few general tips that would help you choose the right background.

 Subject/Background Contrast

Become Better Photographer: Choosing the Right Background with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, photo background, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, backdrop, Adorama TV

The first thing you want to find is an area that’s dark in relation to your subject. Our eyes tend to go to the brightest part of an image first, and if you’re photographing a person, the brightest part should be their face. Look for a background that’s in the shade, or even a dark color to help it blend away behind your subject.

Become Better Photographer: Choosing the Right Background with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, photo background, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, backdrop, Adorama TV

Details vs Plain Color

Become Better Photographer: Choosing the Right Background with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, photo background, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, backdrop, Adorama TV

The second thing to look for is a solid background, something with a lot of detail. Might be interesting to photograph by itself, and works well in some photos, but if it’s too interesting it’s gonna pull you away from your subject. Which is the most important thing in these particular images.

Become Better Photographer: Choosing the Right Background with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, photo background, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, backdrop, Adorama TV

Too close/ Too far

Become Better Photographer: Choosing the Right Background with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, photo background, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, backdrop, Adorama TV

Lastly if you can pull your subject further away from the background, that’ll help it to go out of focus, and turn it into a smooth creamy texture that won’t be distracting.

Become Better Photographer: Choosing the Right Background with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, photo background, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, backdrop, Adorama TV

Your subject will pop right off the screen, solid dark, and far away. If you can get at least one of those, you’ve got a fighting chance. Two out of three is awesome, and finding a background with all three of those elements will guarantee that all eyes are squarely on your subject….which is where you want them to be!

Nicholas James’s “twin” photoshoot

Nicholas-James's-"twin"-photoshoot

Calif. based fashion photographer Nicholas James had the pleasure of shooting at The Hill 3 stage “truly loved the work that came from it”- as photographer states.

Few words about the shoot:

The shoot was a lot of fun. I’d met Nigeria  and she knew Tyra, who had a similar look to hers and we decided to do a ‘twins’ type shoot. We thrifted a majority of the wardrobe and found these wonderful white knit capes for each model and it worked super well with the white-wash aesthetic of the room. Enjoy the shots, and I look forward to spending more time being creative at FD Studios.

4 REASONS TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER. Ep. 4

4 REASONS TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER. Ep. 4

“Gosh, my job is so easy! I just click a button all day… said no photographer ever.”

 Unknown

WATCH THE FIRST PART OF   4 REASONS TO BECOME PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER.

Continuing inspirational series of survey episodes from photographers, and for photographers, we discuss further various reasons to become a photographer. If you are in need of little inspirational boost, or lack friends/family support to pursue photography – these episodes are for you! Cheer up, take a camera, let’s get creative!

The full interview is available of YOUTUBE.  For your convenience, here is the transcript of it as well.

Chris Curiel @C_curiel87 : My friend, she had a homework assignment and she didn’t want to do it and she handed me her camera, and she just told me, “Here, go shoot it.” So I went around, shot it, I gave it back to her and her professor right away saw the difference, was like, “You didn’t shoot this. Who shot this?” And slowly, she did comment to me, and then they brought me in as … and he just told me, “You don’t mind taking the classes? You have something that a lotta students don’t have,” and then I was like, “Sure.” At that moment I dived in into photography not knowing what I was getting into.

Robert Tate @tate.foto : I actually used to … a related industry where I’m really into clothing. So I used to have a blog and I would copy and paste images on my blog, and I kinda got bored of that, so I decided to pick up a camera and shoot the images myself.

Paul Roustan @roustan : Body painting taught me that I kinda don’t really enjoy drawing or painting. When I was doing illustration and comic books I would actually draw. I wouldn’t like the process of drawing, I preferred the results, so I would suffer a little bit as I was drawing, laboring over the illustrations and when I got to the result, I didn’t always like it. Actually, most of the time I didn’t like it.

Ben Tsui @bentsuiphotos : Photography was an interest of mine in my 20s, but I’ve always liked art since I was a little kid. I’ve drawn, I’ve painted, but mostly I’ve always really love looking at all the fashion ads in magazines and campaigns. It really intrigued me on how they shot things with clothes and models and things like that, and when I had the chance I jumped right into it and I’ve been doing it ever since.
