4 REASONS TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER. Ep. 5

4-REASONS-TO-BECOME-A-PROFESSIONAL-PHOTOGRAPHER.-Ep.-5

“Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.”

Dorothea Lange

Most photographers start their professional journey out of true passion, some however get involved in photography by pure accident or sheer peer influence. Although one might say it is important not how you start but how  you continue, in this episode we investigate which reasons to become a photographer have stronger grasp and motivation.

The full interview is available of YOUTUBE.  For your convenience, here is the transcript of it as well.

Arturo Evaristo @artcrooks : What brought me first into photography was acting. I used to act in front of the camera. My mentor, at the time, she decided to give me a camera and through there I tried to do self-portraits and it started that. My true passion was photographing people and just catching that moment.

Steven Pressler @stevenpresslerphotography : You know, when I was a little kid, I just had amazing curiosity for photography. I remember my people parents buying me one of those little Instamatic things where you click and waited five seconds or so and then the picture was developed. I thought it was the most fascinating thing in the world.

Over the years, my parents upgraded me and bought better cameras. I got more and more involved and more interested in photography. The ability to capture something at the moment and to be able to reminisce and have that permanently in your memory bank is just an incredible part of photography.

Alex G. Harper @alexgharper : I started when I was about 14, developing my own film, really learning how to shoot film, primarily, then started shooting digital. Took a small break in there when I moved out to Los Angeles. Kind of found my way, figured out my steps and then really started heavy into it again probably 2013, 2014.

Mila Zvereva @mila_zvereva : Ever since I was a child, I was drawn to photography. After high school, I studied at the Academy of Arts for five years, majoring in photography. I learned entire photography process from start to finish. I took pictures, developed and then printed them.

This process was inspiring to me. I thought it was magical and photography still fascinates me.

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

In this episode with Mark Wallace and AdoramaTV we will show  how to create a high contrast grungy  portrait, with nothing but natural light.

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

With help of his awesome model – famous traveler Polo,  the couple has a really simple lighting setup.

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

There’s this really nice soft shade, coming through a tent roof right above them. And there is also an  open shade, with a lot of  light coming from the street size.

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

Mark continues – “Now what that  is going to do for us is, that it is  going to give Polo some amazing specular  highlights in his eyes. If we look at  this from a different vantage point, you  can see that the light is shining over  the patio and reflecting off of the  buildings on the other side of the  street.

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

You can also see that these  buildings reflect different amounts of  light, and that they are different shapes  and sizes, and so what that’s going to do  for us is — that when we crank up the  contrast in Lightroom, and do our  post-production, that’s going to make his  eyes very sparkly, and because he’s  wearing a black jacket, he’s got this  really dark beard with just a touch of  grey,  and we’ll  crank that up, and that’s gonna make  everything on his beard  to be really, really pronounced.

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

Mark gets really focused on his  eyes, and his beard, while shooting with my 50 mm  prime lens and wide open aperture at f/1.4. According to Mr. Wallace: “…now that’s gonna  do two things for us,  Number 1. Again, it’s going to make sure  that the focus is on Polo”s eyes.  They’re going to be crystal clear, and  everything else is going to sort of fall  out of focus.”

It is interesting to note that the background –  a simple balcony glass door is not really a ‘cool’ background, but because  it’s out of focus, and because it’s also  reflecting all the light, and the images  of the buildings across the street, it’s  going to turn out to be pretty nice.

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

Let’s  start shooting!  Always give yourself options, shoot  some horizontal, and some vertical shots to present a variety for your client.

After a shoot is over, let’s switch over to Lightroom. Mark has  already decided that he will do two versions, a color version, and a  black-and-white version.

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

For color version, first let’s work on  some color toning, and change the clarity  and the blacks, the mid-tones, the  highlights, to get that really  high contrast look.

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

We are driving for  a really cool tone, which is achieved by changing the color temperature.

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

Mark continues: “I’ve also changed my highlight shadows,  and whites etc, to create the contrast  that I want, and then I also cranked up  the clarity to + 20, that is a pretty  significant jump for a portrait, and then  last but not least it took my saturation  down to – 17, and we can look in  here and see that this is pretty punchy  as is, but we need to, we need to take it  one step further.” And that is to finish editing in Photoshop – to add  some layers, some filters, and most notably utilize Mark’s favorite Nik  software collection, to really add punch  to this image.

Steps in Photshop:

  1. copy the original photo to preserve a  non-destructive image. Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -
  2. In filters, Mark uses the Nik software  collection. “Of course it’s one of my  favorites, and I’m going to use analog  effects Pro 2. Now once again” For this example Mark has created a  custom  camera, named ‘Polo Grunge’, which has following settings applied. Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -
  3. Play with Basic adjustments, add some detail extraction  at 56%. Mark changed the brightness, contrast, the saturationBecome Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -
  4. Good idea to add a very mild lens vignette,  “and most importantly I changed the film  type to subtle, and then chose this first  image in the second series here, so that  gives it that toning. It’s really what I  want.” Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -
  5. Change the grain. Mark cranked it up to 254, and  made this  over to the hard side, to give it that  really grungy look. So if we zoom in to  100%, you can see  this  artificial grain, and that’s really  making Polo’s eyes, really nice and  punchy.Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -
  6. Add a high-pass filter. That’s just gonna  over sharpen this image and give Polo’s  beard his eyes and his hair that  extra-special sharp look. To do it, create another copy  of the layer. Go to ‘ filter’ -> ‘other’ -> ‘High Pass’. “Now I want to do  this a pretty, pretty, strong filter. So  I’m going to take this up to 2 pixels.  That is way more than you would ever use  on a standard portrait, but we’re going  for grunge. We’re going for really high contrast.” Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace - Change the layer to an overlay layer.Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

With these settings you can really get very pronounced catch light reflections in model’s eyes.

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

To compare again,  this is our image straight out of Lightroom.

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

This is our analog effects Pro  that grunge, and the grain, and this is  the high pass filter, giving that even  more of a grungy look. Looks pretty cool!

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

Let’s do even better!

Now we are going to create  black and  white version of the image  by clicking ‘black and white’ setting in Lightroom, and  then adjusting the  highlights, shadows, whites and blacks  and working with the  ‘clarity’ to give it a little bit  more pop, and contrast.

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

We’re going to finish editing it in Photoshop. Editing steps in Photoshop would be the same as for previous image. But this time, we’re going to  be using ‘silver effects Pro 2’ in Mark’s favorite Nik collection (since it is made for that).

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

Our global  adjustments include taking the mid-tones up just  a little bit, Bumping up the contrast,  really bumping up the structure, that’s giving us all of this really, really fine,  control over the hair, and his beard,  making it look a little bit whiter than  it actually is.

Mark continues: “The other thing that  I have done, it’s probably the most  important is, I’ve changed the film types  I’m using an Agfa APX 400, that’s adding  some of this grain to make it look more  like a 1970’s photo, that was shot on film”.  The last touch is to add a High Pass filter.  That is it!

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

Let’s do a final comparison – our   black-and-white image, straight out of  Lightroom:

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

Our image in Silver  Effects Pro, with high  pass filter (so it’s over sharpened) , but  that’s ok!

Become Better Photographer: How To Shoot High Contrast Natural Light Portraits with Mark Wallace -

Now that is a really grungy image!

Checking Color Balance with David Bergman

Tell us if this story sound familiar to you – 1. having a perfect photoshoot, so much fun with the crew. 2. Got home, loading pictures to edit those while the hype and energy is there. 3. Once loaded, all pictures show colors that way off from what you had on set. 4. It drives you crazy, the fact that you have to now eyeball everything to get a similar color. 5. Rest of the day ruined.

In this episode David Bergman with   AdoramaTv will relieve you of all of that stress.

There are lots of reasons to make sure you’re getting the right color in your photographs. Whether you shoot products, weddings, portraits, artwork or events. You need to deliver accurate consistent color every single time.

David continues: “The challenge is that every camera and lens combination sees color just a little bit differently. So what’s a photographer to do? Well there are two primary solutions.”

One of those solutions is to use an 18% gray card to get accurate exposures.

Become Better Photographer: Checking Color Balance with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, color checker, blog, Adorama TV

You can also use that same card to set the white balance in your camera, since the camera understands exactly what 18% gray should look like. Just shoot a picture of that gray card in the same lighting conditions as your subject.

Become Better Photographer: Checking Color Balance with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, color checker, blog, Adorama TV

Use that frame to set a custom white balance in the camera, or just do it afterwards on your RAW files in the computer by using the click white balance on that gray area. Copy and paste that setting to all of your images in the same lighting situation and they’ll all be perfectly accurate.

Become Better Photographer: Checking Color Balance with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, color checker, blog, Adorama TV

However  according to Mr. Bergman,  “…the gray card is going to get you pretty close, but if photography is your business and you need a hundred percent accurate skin tones and product colors then you’ll want to take it one step further. Pick up something like this X-Rite colorchecker passport, and photograph that in each lighting scenario.”

Become Better Photographer: Checking Color Balance with David Bergman -Tutorial, Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, color checker, blog, Adorama TV

Make sure you don’t touch the swatches with your fingers, because the oils on your hands will eventually wear down the colors.

Since the color checker shows you a large range of colors not just gray, you can use the included software in Lightroom or Photoshop to create a profile from that image that tells the software that red is red blue is blue, and where everything should fall in between. Paste that to all of your images have consistent accurate colors.

At the end, our maestro notes that “…now just like exposure, you might want to change your colors for creative reasons, and that’s totally up to you. The X-Rite even has a few shades of white you can click on, to selectively warm or cool down your images, but if accurate color is important to your photography, use these tools and nail it every single time. “

WHAT IS THE MESSAGE OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY? We asked 4 PROs

“A thing that you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people.”

Annie Leibovitz

This episode is dedicated to  explore the ‘serious’ side of photography as a craft. Most importantly it raises the question “why do you do it in the first place?” We asked 4 professional photographers in Los Angeles to share their story.

The full interview is available of YOUTUBE.  For your convenience, here is the transcript of it as well.

Karina Dobra @karinadobraphoto : I would like to show something meaningful, something with a purpose, to raise awareness of the audience. Then, I would say, something beautiful as a fashion photography, with a certain stylistic. In my photography, that we should consume less than … We should … We shouldn’t be that dependent on technology and devices because basically what is happening now, technologies are replacing humans, so we no longer meet each other, we just text each other, FaceTime. We have billions of people living on the Earth, and then if everybody would consume that much, and waste that much, what would happen with the Earth in 100, 200 years time? We should think about it. That’s what I want to do with my photography. I want to … People to consider it and think about it.

Paul Capra @paulcapra : Today I focused on shooting something against the curve, something sort of new. Today was about insecurities, about impressing the wrong people, and how they view social media, and what young girls look up to to want to aspire to be as a model. I think people get the wrong impression looking at my work, most of the time. I think they feel as though … Some girls, I hear all the time talk about how they aren’t beautiful, yet they are, or they talk about their insecurities. Today kind of keyed in and focused on that topic. I feel like Sara was the perfect person, and it’s not like I was planning this project, it’s just someone I reached out to just a couple days ago, last minute, and I had some free time and I wanted to shoot her. But I wanted to do it in a unique way. I felt like on a more personable level, with social media, and loving yourself, as opposed to wanting to aspire to be some of the models on Instagram, who really live just a lonely life in general. Who are so infatuated with social media likes and comments and what they post, as opposed to actually being happy with themselves and loving what they’re doing.

Molly Pan @mollypanphotography : It’s really important to me that people know that they’re beautiful, and to celebrate that beauty. I think a lot of people go through life hiding, and hiding behind the camera. Basically like, “Oh, I’m going to lose 30 pounds and then you can take a picture of me.” I find beauty in all types of people, all sizes, all ages, all skin colors. I think that’s the message. I want to show people that they’re beautiful.

Bekah Wriedt @bekahwriedt : One of my goals in photography is to empower women. I feel like in this industry they tend to be very undervalued, and I value them and all that they’re capable of doing. I want to empower them and just speak life into them.
