Steady As She Goes with David Bergman

Photographer David Bergman

Today’s  tip with Photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV is about keeping your camera stable at slower shutter speeds. Even the steadiest hands get to a point where you might have camera shake when shooting without a tripod. That could result in blurry photos the wider the lens generally. The old  school film guideline was that as long as the denominator of your shutter speed was bigger than your focal length you could generally keep the camera stable. So for example, if I’m using a 50 millimeter lens – I want to shoot at at least a 50th of a second or faster. Today with modern digital cameras I generally like to double that amount. so with that 50 millimeter I want to shoot at least a 100th of a second.”

“Newer lenses have image stabilization built into them and you can also bump up your ISO to get faster shutter speeds. However there are just times when you don’t have enough light and you need to  do some things with your body position to help minimize shake. While you’r  shooting put your left hand underneath the lens to really help stabilize your gear.”

“Take slow deep breaths and shoot at the end of your exhale. when I shoot I like to look through the viewfinder instead of using the LCD screen on the back of the camera. That extra point of contact by holding the camera up against my face helps to stabilize everything.”

“If I’m shooting video and have to use that LCD screen on the back of the camera. I’ll put the  camera strap around my neck and hold it out from my body as hard as I can. That way I can move around and pan left and right and get a pretty solid stable shot.”

Pop Up Perfection with David Bergman

Pop Up Perfection with David Bergman

If you’ve ever done a photo shoot with pop-up reflectors you’ve probably dealt with this incredibly  frustrating issue folding it back.  In today’s tips photographer David Bergman is going to show how to tame these things and get them back down.

“Pop-up reflectors can be extremely useful  on a photo shoot. They come in all different shapes sizes and colors. They all generally work the same way, and that they come in a really small bag. But when  you open them up they automatically pop, open to three or four times their original size. That’s the easy part. After the shoot you might find getting it back into the bag can be a challenge.”

“You can push and shove this thing all day long and it’s just not going to work. So how do you get that big reflector back into the little bag? I’m going to show you how!  The first thing you want to do is hold  the reflector out in front of you with both hands.”

“Then take one hand and flip it over so that your knuckles are facing back towards your body.”

“Then pull that hand up towards you so it twists a reflector into a figure eight shape. Now flip your other hand the opposite direction and you’ll find that the whole thing curls up in on itself.”

“All you have to do then is simply adjust the pieces so they’re roughly the same size. Once you  have this general motion embedded in your memory you’ll find there are a number of other products that use the same twisting motion.”

“For example , Lastolite makes a soft box that opens up really big but folds up the same way into a tight little bag. The only minor change is with things like these giant backdrops – because it’s not in the shape of a perfect circle, what you want to do is fold it in half away from you first.”

“And then you do that same twisting motion to fold it in on itself and you’re done. Get this technique down and you’ll have no problem folding these things up at the end of your next photo shoot.”

Three Tips to Improve Your Photos with David Bergman

Three Tips to Improve Your Photos with David Bergman

Today’s tip with the photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV is about three things you can get that’ll make your photographic life just a little bit easier.

Mr. Bergman explains: “Of course there are obvious things like cameras and lenses but I’m going to talk about just a few things that I use on a regular basis. I’ve been using photo mechanic for almost twenty years way back from when I was a newspaper photographer, and we’d have literally thousands of images to go through on multiple cars. What photo mechanic does is it allows you to ingest all of your  images, embed caption and copyright information into the file and then let you tag and rate your images however you want.”

“The next item will help you take multiple shoe mount flashes and put them into a light modifier like a photo umbrella. Adding multiple flashes is a great thing because if you’re outdoors doing a  portrait it’ll really help you to overpower the Sun. But it can be really clumsy to make it happen with all those  flashes. What you want to get is something like this flashpoint triple-shoe mount bracket.”

“It allows you to put up to three flashes on one stand and has a swivel built in so you can angle your  umbrella however you want.”

“Lastly, have you ever been somewhere with a dead battery and have absolutely nowhere to plug-in? I’m not just talking about your phone battery but even things like computers cameras and flashes. What do you do in that situation? Vagabond mini lithium is a small  lightweight rechargeable battery and has  two household plugs and one USB port so you can recharge your devices anywhere even in the middle of nowhere. The best part is that it’s a pure sine-wave power source so you can even run studio lights right off of the battery.”

In this quick tutorial we are going to talk about creating a super wide angled panoramic image by  shooting multiple photos and combining them into one.

“Sometimes you’re in a wide-angle photo and the lens you have just isn’t quite wide enough to capture  the whole strand with some practice you can take multiple overlapping photos with almost any lens to make a super wide angle high-resolution panoramic. In a perfect world you’ll use a tripod for the panoramic head on, like the middle ninja or an automatic system like the GigaPan. But the reality is you’re  probably out in about shooting other pictures with your DSLR and won’t have any of that hardware with you.”

“There are a few things you need to do every time you make a multi shot panoramic image if  you’re going to be combining multiple photos you have to be consistent in both. If one frame is darker or has a  different focal plane than the others – the whole thing is going to be messed up. When taking the pictures you can hold your camera either horizontally or vertically. I prefer to shoot vertically because then I get more space on the top.”

Become Better Photographer: Panoramic Power with David Bergman -Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Panoramic Power with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“we’re also want an overlap each frame about a third of the way into the next,  so keep an eye on the edges of your picture as you move from frame to frame. This last part is super important – what you want to do when you’re taking the  pictures is rotate the camera aroun  what’s called the “nodal point” which is  roughly around the middle of the lens.”

“What’s going to happen is you’ll find that your stitch works much better you’ll have a lot more space  to play with on your crop damage at the end. After the images have been shot you can use a lot of different stitching software to put them all together.  I like PhotoMerge which is built into Photoshop. If I’m going to shoot a lot of images than that I’ll usually use the GigaPan hardware and their software as well. After I’ve combined them all then I’ll  bring them to Photoshop and do any final  touchups to make the image really how I want it. At the end of the day creating one of these high-res panoramas is really  half science and half art.”

In this article Photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV are going to talk about the difference  between selling photos, and then licensing them.

David explains: “When it comes to photography, you could buy one of my photo prints to hang on your wall. You could also hire me for a portrait session or to photograph an event for you. Now you’re saying okay Captain Obvious, so what’s the point? Well, there’s another commonly accepted way to  make money with your photography, and that’s by licensing usage of your work.”

Become Better Photographer: Licensing Logistics with David Bergman -Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Licensing Logistics with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“Let’s say someone wants to publish one of your images in an ad campaign. Now this could be an existing image of yours or even if they’re hiring you to create  something new for them. You don’t just  sell them the photo, and now they own it forever. You instead issue a license for that particular use, spelling out all the relevant information, like how many times it can be used, how big it can run, and  how long the license is in effect, etc. For photographers, because we can relicense  that image over and over again, the United States copyright law states that each photo can earn you money even after you’re dead and gone! It’s also good for the buyer, because they only pay for the uses that they need and don’t spend more than they have to.”

Become Better Photographer: Licensing Logistics with David Bergman -Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Licensing Logistics with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“If they want all rights forever – you have to charge for any potential use that might ever be in existence. Are they planning to put up a billboard on the  surface of the Moon? My guess is they’re  not doing that, so why should they pay extra money for that. Of course, communication is key here, and you should  be having conversations with your  clients so they understand exactly how your pricing works. And like any business you need to have your own contracts, and paperwork that spells this all out.  So that everyone is on the same page.  Talk to other working photographers  about this, and you can also use software to help you get started like Photo Biz  and Photo Quote. Licensing is the key to making a living in most creative fields!”

In this quick tutorial with the Photographer David Bergman and AdoramaTV we are going to explore the various color options available with the 6-in-1 reflector.

Mr Bergman explains: “Some photo reflectors come with a cover that has different colors on it, and that will give you a number of unique looks. There are many brands that have a similar set up, but today I’m using the Westcott 42 inch, 6 in-1  reflector, which has four different color options. Let’s talk about why you might use – one color, or the other. The silver side is pretty harsh, and very reflective.  It’s almost like using a mirror, and  gives you a lot of punch when you bounce the light.”

Become Better Photographer: Reflector Colors with David Bergman -Studio Photography, shot at FD Photo Studio, rental stages, quick tips, Photoshop, Photoshoot, Photography blog, paid photography, modeling, Los Angeles, How To, gear, gallery, FD photo studio, fashion photographer, DTLA, David Bergman, blog, Become Better Photographer: Reflector Colors with David Bergman, Adorama TV

“The gold side has the same harsh punches of silver, but it changes  the color to a much warmer shade. It’s almost unnatural looking, like a really golden deep sunset.”

“Then there’s a gold silver mix which Westcott calls sunlight.  It might be my favorite, because it’s  warmer than the cold silver side, but gives a more natural look than the full  gold side. I personally find this to be the best balance between the two. The gold, silver and sunlight sides, can all  be used as a main frontal key-light  since they nearly match the intensity of the Sun.”

“In this case, the fourth color is a solid black, and that simply blocks  almost all the light from bouncing back.  You can use this for negative fill, or add in your own light by using speed.”

“Lastly you can take the cover off completely, and use the reflector just b  itself. The thick solid material gives you a much softer reflection. It’s normally used to fill in shadows, and won’t overpower your main light. You won’t see much of an effect on a cloudy day, but if you’ve got sunlight use it to  direct some of that light back up into the dark shadow areas.”

“The sixth option for this six and one, is a second reflector, that’s made of a more translucent material and can be used as diffusion. You can either put it between the Sun and your model to soften the light and take away some of that contrast, or you can even shoot your flash through it, to turn the small light source into a much bigger light source.”
