Are you a proud wide lens owner? If your lens has less than 50mm of focal length, chances are you are one of them! Luckily in this episode with photographer David Bergman and his Two Minute Tips for AdoramaTV we will explore some techniques that can enhance the composition of your wide-angle images.
David shares – “Common wide-angle lenses are like 35, 28, 24 or all the way down to 14 or 11 millimeters. It’s fun to shoot wide. The extreme field of view allows us to show a lot of things happening in the frame all at once. Sometimes that’s the way you want it. The viewer can spend a lot of time looking at the image and can see more and more interesting things the longer they look around.”
“But other times you want an image to tell the viewer exactly where to look. One way to do that is by putting something very close in the foreground of your image. It can be anything interesting that you want to focus on. A leaf, a statue, or even a person. You’ll find that this gives you your image some depth. “
“If everything is the same distance from the lens, the photos tend to be really boring but if you get close enough to your subject the background will go out of focus and the foreground subject will be the only thing the viewer will care about. So the next time you shoot wide angle, shoot with something in the foreground and use the extreme composition to guide your viewers eyes exactly where you want them. “
