Robert Altman’s Dance Photography

About the photographer:

Having shot a lot of live Arts performances for the NY Times and AP my favorite subjects were always Dance and Dancers. While capturing live shows is great (and really sharpens your skills in timing and capturing ‘the’ moment), it was always a bit frustrating not having control of the choreography and lighting (as well as not being able to repeat a move until the timing of the photo was perfect). That is why I have been doing more and more planned shoots- both outdoors on location and with our cold Winters turning towards the Studio. Photography for me has always been about the light (and shadow) – and the control that strobes give me allows me to create a more theatrical and dramatic image – perfect for dance!

About the shoot:

I was working with a dancer from the Metropolitan Opera Ballet corps- Mia Li ( @mia_li_dance on IG). My goal was to use strobes to create a more dramatic and theatrical image than the flatter light often used in studio dance photography… I feel directed light emphasizes both the line and athleticism of dance as well as sculpting the clothing in motion – a definite overlap with fashion! The blackout studio allowed us to play with some motion blur images that window light would have killed.
