Blackout Photo Studios for Rent in New York

Shooting on location sounds great until you’re fighting overhead fluorescents you can’t turn off, windows that blow out your background, or a space that simply won’t go dark no matter what you flag. For photographers and videographers who need to build light from scratch, a blackout studio is the only real answer.

FD Photo Studio has seven blackout studios across New York: five in Brooklyn, one in Long Island City, and two in Astoria, Queens. Each one gives you black walls, black ceiling, and zero ambient light bleed so the only light in your frame is the light you put there.

Why Shoot in a Blackout Studio

When a space is completely dark, you control every detail. You decide the direction, the color, the intensity, and the mood. This matters whether you’re sculpting dramatic shadow on a portrait subject, shooting a product on a seamless black background, lighting a car to show off its body lines, or creating a neon-soaked music video look that would be impossible anywhere else.

Compare that to renting a daylight studio and blacking it out yourself: hanging fabric, taping gaps, burning 30 to 45 minutes of your rental time before a single test shot fires. A proper blackout studio is already done. You walk in and start shooting.

Blackout Studios for Rent in New York

Blackout studio with RGB lights and four sets in Long Island City: LIC 4

This 700-square-foot studio is located at 4020 22nd Street, 4th floor, Long Island City, NY 11101. It has black walls and ceiling, plus a black gloss floor. The studio is divided into four distinct sets: two French walls, an X-light installation, and RGB color lighting. That variety means you can rotate through completely different looks without changing rooms. Rates start from $39.99.

The black gloss floor, when lit with the RGB lights, creates a colored reflection under your subject. For portraits, the X-lights let you control exactly how hard or soft your edge light is without adding a single modifier. This studio is ideal for sports, fashion, and dnace shoots.

Blackout studio with black walls and ceiling Astoria 4

If you want pure darkness with no extra elements to work around, this space is for you. The 600-square-foot studio is located at 35-58 37th St 3rd Floor, Astoria, NY 11106. Black walls, black ceiling, black floor: it’s a true void. No secondary sets, no props. Just clean, complete darkness for photographers who want a blank slate. Rates start from $34.99.

Because there are no competing surfaces, every light you add behaves exactly as predicted. For photographers working on high-contrast portraits or dramatic editorial looks, that consistency across a full shoot day makes a real difference. For videographers, it removes any risk of unwanted color bounce from walls or set pieces.

Blackout studio with sport bike, RGB lights Astoria 7

This 940-square-foot studio is located at 35-58 37th St 3rd Floor, Astoria, NY 11106. It has a sport bike included in the rental, RGB lights, and metal wall. Rates start from $34.99.

The bike gives fashion, sports, and lifestyle photographers a ready-made prop without any production cost. Combined with the RGB lights, you can shift the color of the entire space in seconds, which is why this studio is popular for music video production and editorial series that need multiple distinct looks in a single shoot day.

Blackout studio with RGB tunnel, RGB walls, and sport bike in Brooklyn: Metro 1

No location in New York gives you an RGB tunnel, color-changing walls, a sport bike, and drive-in car access all in one room. This 1,250-square-foot studio is located at 1003 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211. It has fully controllable RGB walls, a walk-through RGB tunnel, a 13 to 14-foot ceiling, and a red sports bike included in the rental. The studio is on the ground level with a large loading gate, so cars and bikes can drive straight in. Rates start from $39.99.

The RGB tunnel creates a sense of depth and movement that is very hard to fake in post. For music videos, portrait series, or automotive content, you get an immersive environment that looks like a movie set.

Blackout studio with mirror walls on both sides and RGB ceiling in Brooklyn: Metro 2

Metro 2 is the go-to for automotive and music video work in New York. This 1,560-square-foot studio is located at 1003 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211. It has mirror walls on both sides, a fully controllable RGB ceiling that can sync to music, an 8-foot ceiling, and a brand-new black gloss floor. Ground-level loading gate for car and bike access. One side of the mirrors can be covered with curtains. Rates start from $44.99.

The double mirror walls create infinite reflections, which gives you a visual depth that reads very differently depending on how you light it. For automotive work, the reflections wrap around the car body and make a single vehicle look like it’s in a high-budget studio. For portraits and video, the RGB ceiling color fills the mirrors and changes the entire mood of the space.

Rock band OUTLIER used this studio to film their “CROWN” music video, moving between Metro studios in a single day without leaving the building. See the full behind-the-scenes breakdown.

Rain room with RGB lights in Brooklyn: Metro 4

Rain shoots outdoors require permits, safety crews, and weather you can’t control. Metro 4 removes all of that. This 920-square-foot studio is located at 1003 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211. It has four rain modes, pre-installed RGB wall lights, two GVM 1500D LED panels included at no extra cost, a black tile wall, a black block wall, a park bench, and a bathtub. Rates start from $49.99.

Here you get four controllable rain settings, warm water, and complete light control in a space already built for shoots with water. The RGB lights let you color the rain and create the kind of atmosphere that would otherwise require a much larger production budget.

Blackout studio with black cyc wall and rain features in Brooklyn: Metro 5

If you need a seamless black background, rain, and car access in the same space, Metro 5 is your choice. This 1,820-square-foot studio is located at 1003 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211. It has a large black corner cyc wall, four rain modes, and ground-level car access via a loading gate. Two GVM 150W RGB video lights are available for rent. Rates start from $49.99.

The black cyc wall eliminates the floor-to-wall seam, which gives a completely seamless background for car photography, large-group shoots, and video productions that need a clean, infinite black look. The rain system adds the option to shoot without a location permit or outdoor weather risk. At 1,820 square feet, this is the largest blackout space in the New York FD Photo Studio lineup.

Blackout studio with large white corner cyc wall in Brooklyn: Metro 6

This 1,000-square-foot studio is located at 1003 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211, on the ground floor. It has a large corner white cyc wall and full blackout space. The white cyc wall gives you a clean, seamless background that works for e-commerce, product photography, portraits, and video content where you need a bright, neutral look without setting up a separate backdrop. The blackout space mean you still control every bit of light in the frame. It’s the most affordable studio in the Metro building, which makes it a practical choice for longer production days or teams who want to keep costs down while staying in a fully equipped space.
